You never forget the one person that is the love of your life. The one who is your soul mate. So it is with Sonny & Cher. Yeah its Sonny first in that marquee name. Sonny was the heart and yes talent, brains, pizazz behind their tremendous success, and yes endearing relationship. When Cher was honored at the Kennedy Center, the last song of hers was I got you Babe. Everyone in the audience was singing it, and Cher wasn't crying(she would never display that to the public except once), but her eyes were filled and shining. Some of us were kids when their show aired in the 70s, some of us weren't even born, yet everyone has heard of Sonny & Cher, and of course Cher solely. They were endearing to us, their love was so strong and real that we felt it watching them on a TV screen. It never died. Even after both had divorced and remarried, their They were (and guess what Chasity was backstage) on the Letterman show. Hokding hands, singing I got you Babe, and again I felt that love that never died between them. Yes they lived separate completely different lives after they divorced, but those two were what we all want in our relationships...soul mates, lovers, friends. I saw them live. The magic wasn't in the writing of their lines, Cher impeccable costumes and yes unique beauty, her singing voice, Sonny obviousness in the beginning and end of all their performances, it was the two of them. They together were for a moment in history the best in entertainment and in love.
It's funny how Cher was shy and needed Sonny to be out there with her. Boy did she come out of her shell years later. She's got no problem commanding the audience and isn't afraid to sing, let alone walk around half naked in front of millions of people. They invented the look of the 60's together, and she invented the shocking diva image, long before people like Madonna or Lady Gaga.
Sunny it was a control freak. Listen to the interview he tried to control how she cut her hair what she said everything she finally broke free from him that’s why Douglas ask if there was a lot of arguments. The devil is in the details
*She only needed that in the very beginning* like anyone else, who is still young _(23yrs old here),_ *then Sonny took over and was Controlling with a Temper.* She *left him because he kept shoving her back in that shell* like she was still *the same 16yr old aspiring Artist he met.* It was his way or no way. @@tjj5337 @TJ J She started out at 16yrs old & was Normal _(shy)_ for a kid. At the time of this show she was 23yrs old and strongly Controlled by Sonny who had a Temper. I always watched this classic show with my Nana Josie !! ....I am now 56 and understand the JOY of entertainment even more the older I get !! Mike was very genuine ! Excellent singer too !
So much better than the garage on television today which consists of trash talk shows, fake court shows and endless hours of news. I need a time machine to go back to good television. Thanks so much for posting this
Yèh......I too loathe to watch the "garage" on television😉......Loathe even more the garbage which is part and parcel of today's TV ....."garbage" which is a synonym for "Kardeshian" ...... Thankfully we have RU-vid so we're not longer dependent on regular television......
Mike could sing! I am now 54 and I would watch this now classic TV afternoon show with my Nana, she loved Mike! He also had some classic guest! I am guessing from 1967-1981? Great days!
Nicky Depaola I watched every afternoon after school also. My sisters and I had the album soundtrack of Disney's Cinderella and he was the voice of Prince Charming.
yes his did i had the same thing happen to me and mine ex i was allow to cut my hair but not dye is i really wanted to dye is but my ex wont allow is and the cutting part i mean i was only allow to get my hair trim and but yet his would go get his haircut. cause i use to be like cher still kinda im i couldnt speak my mind or talk to strangers so shy and my ex would do all the talking. so one day i had enough and i spoke out and ask him why i cant cut or dye my hair and his say cause is will make me look ugly and no one would love me we were together for six years like i was sad when his told me that. his was also controlling not as bad as sonny but like excuse my language here i am a virgin and his keep wanted to have sex with me and try and force me too and i keep saying no cause im the type of person who is waiting for the one no sex before marriage type thing and his hated that i refused is that to the stage where his wanted more a open relationship i say no and his started cheating on me with boys at the time his was bisexual is wasnt just onces is was twice and possibly more idk his only told me about too. his live with me and my parents his though we were all stupid and that we dont know about him cheating but we know cause his forget that his give me the password to his facebook so i saw all the messages and another thing his never spend time with me anymore like yes his was a big gamer and stuff but like even when his was gaming his would still spend time with me so i know something fishy was going on when his left for work and come back home late or his would tell me going out with a friend which i dont care but come back home acting all guilty. so i keep it to my self hoping that the guilt would eat away at him which is did and one time we were hanging out in my room and his started tearing up and random blurt out that his was cheating on me and started crying saying im sorry is wont happy again plzz dont leave me i will kill my self so i calm him down told him i already know and so do the parents and i stayed with him cause i was scared of what his would do to his self. but only a month i realise that his was manipulating me to stay with him as his started talking about marrying me and having kids with me like his pick the names of the kids and everythng which i was fine with but anyways only a month i was done i started losing feels for him and his told me his is gay so we broke up and we our separtion ways still friends to this day but our relationship was abit toxic but than again his was my first real boyfriend from year 12 to 2021 so they say u never forget your first love i hAVENT
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this interview! I absolutely love Sonny and Cher and I love seeing new videos of them! I especially like seeing older videos of them like this one. They were such a cute couple, I love seeing them together. And Cher looks so gorgeous in this interview! Her beauty was at its finest here. Her hair is incredibly beautiful; long, shiney; I'd give anything to have hair like hers!
I like how Sonny makes it sound like they were playing nightclubs by choice. When in fact they were broke, and owed the IRS over $200,000, after their movie flopped and weren't very popular anymore. They were basically doing what they had to do to survive. However, it was while they were playing nightclubs when a producer saw their comedy act they did on stage between songs and offered them a variety show. Funny how things work out.
Maybe playing the nightclubs was part of his plan to be back on top. Both of said that Sonny told Cher to give him 3 years (that' the number he uses in his autobiography) & he'll have them back on top. On CBS's "Sonny & Me: Cher Remembers", Cher said 2 years. Actually, according to an interview by CBS's Fred Silverman,he saw them appearing on Merv Griffin, promoting an engagement in NYC & he thought they were "really cute" & had CBS producers go to the hotel they were performing. At the time Fred Silverman was head of CBS Entertainment. He gave them a summer replacement show & it was so successful, he couldn't wait to get them back on the air. Mr. Silverman said The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was his favorite show on the entire network. His interview is on YT.
That was the facade of Sonny. He was honest, but never frank about their lows in show biz in front of us the public. He was a smart savvy entrepreneur and entertainer.
This is funny...and revealing. Sonny and Cher's relationship as a married couple on full display. Fun loving and real, for sure-but you can see and hear Sonny's control over their whole life, with Cher's independence creeping out, and beginning to emerge.... Watching this clip is like opening a time capsule.
Since they met when she dropped out of school @16yrs & he was 27yrs, it makes sense. She often said their relationship was complicated ... He was her father, brother, mentor & later her boyfriend, then husband. He gave her a job cleaning his place, then got her a background singing position & guided her career.
Wow 1969 I was 4 then, my goodness, the technology back in 69 was heavy duty , I noticed how Sonny was bent over towards Cher, she was so cool, and free being herself ♊ love you Cher xoxo
I think that's true when it comes to Sonny wanting Cher to go it alone in singing. In concerts and shows. That the public wanted both of them together performing is a testimonial to the endearing love they both displayed for each other and the public was attracted to them for that reason.
In NYC, this episode would have aired on WCBS-TV (Channel 2), which had aired the show since March 1968; he was the lead-in to that station's "Six O'Clock Report" anchored by Jim Jensen (and vied for the top spot with WABC-TV's "4:30 Movie," and both of which usually left WNBC-TV's "Movie 4" in the dust ratings-wise). As to the picture quality - around the 8:00 mark, the answer slips as to which camera was being used: the RCA TK-42/43 class. And the halo around the lights before the bumper cinches it.
Buddy of mine just turned 2 when this episode of: (Mike Douglas)was televised... (That's definitely something else) Just getting out from behind(Crib)bars... "Some Good Humor"
This show was taped in 1969. It is now 2022. It’s been 53 years. Cher is still beautiful and performing today . I can’t help but notice the tailor cut on Sonny’s suit . Sonny was much shorter than Cher and the use of platform shoes was in full swing ( Elton John , Tony Orlando etc..) When you see Sonny in his entirety you can’t help but notice the length of his pants over the shoes not to mention I don’t think Cher’s wearing heels . Regardless of their individual heights they were both genuine and wonderful performers. Miss you Mr Bono .. RIP.
Chesapeake Bay I think that was Sonny just being controlling because I don’t think her hair became a “thing” until the 70’s with the Sonny and Cher show.
Sonny treating her like a kid... telling her she's not allowed to cut her hair, that it's always in her eyes, etc... I can see why she outgrew him and I'm glad she did.
She never outgrew him she never stop loving him ever see her concert the way she looks when she sings I Got You Babe and when she spoke at his eulogy it's obvious her own mother said she never stopped loving him besides without Sonny there would be no cher
@@donnalombardo1135 she did outgrow him that doesn't mean she stopped loving him as she said years ago hes like a demanding farther that never wanted her to evolve and grow up, Cher wanted real happiness not her pretending to be happy for his sake.
Unfortunately part of this show seems to be missing. I can't find all the parts with Jan Peerce which is such a shame. He was the best talent on this episode.
Strange that there were no close ups of Sony and Cher. There were plenty of close ups of Mike but none of his guests. The camera in the background was wasted. Very poor direction.
Ben Dover Good production doesn't take the easy way. I know something about television production. Also, they had a camera in the background that could have been used to pickup a closeup of Sonny and Cher.
Cher look pretty every time her age but now to be her Cher absolutelly stanning geaogeouse as look well your body modern conditions almost she look like Cher no com.
will watching this interview now in 2023 that dont happen they both ended up staying as Sonny and Cher and making a show together and stuff like dont get me wrong is would of be cool to see what sonny produce and stuff but im happy that the fans dont let them split up cause they were so good together like yes if they do split up i have a feeling it would of helps they marriage they would still be together today him producing and her singing and acting
I mean. People saying about surgery etc. This was what, nearly 60 years ago!? She would not still look like this today if she hadn't done anything.. and she would unlikely be performing and entertaining us the way she does now if she hadn't taken care of herself.😊
@@freakgirl2175 if you actually looked at her history you would not like her at all. I just had the misfortune of doing that. She is a horrible person-treated her kids horribly. Still has 0 relationship with Elijah.
@@Friendofstfrank Elijah always had issues, Cher tried her best he was angry at his father for leaving him and angry at cher for everything even through that was never her fault, she tried her best let him visit sonny to try and get a male role model in his life and that never seemed to work, sure she did things wrong but she's no horrible mother she was desperate to keep Elijah away from drugs and alcohol because she was paranoid he would end up like his father
They were adorable at this moment. The series was good but lost the charm some what. CHER had a different type of voice at this point also. She changed it to a lower key in her later years.
"They're happy married ,everything's beautyful"...... talented couple .......while Cher went for every stoned rockstar she could lay., Sonny who was the personification of Hollywood alternative living went for the party which had conservative "family virtues" high in its banner..... Cher bytheway seems to have a slight croak on the back of her voice...on this song 5:15 Example that charisma is even more important than a perfect voice......
