In this latest episode #36 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac goes out to his milking barn and demonstrates how to milk a dairy cow. From separating the cow and calf the evening before, to final filtering of the product, you'll see how producing your own milk on the small farm or homestead doesn't have to be complicated.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandsco... to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books (like Pa Mac's "Building an Old-fashioned Pole Barn") or DVD's by Pa Mac at www.farmhandsco...)

When I was a kid it was my chore to milk the cow. she was 1/2 jersey and 1/4 Angus and 1/4 Hereford. Named Tiny she was a huge black cow with a white face. When I milked her I took all of the milk from the front quarters and most from her rear quarters and turned the calf in with her for a hour or so. They where then seperated. That cow knew where I slept. And at daylight every morning she would come to my window and beller and bawl for me to get up and a go milk here. She wanted the sweet feed mixed with a larger amount of wheat shorts. So I had to get up and stoke the fire in the wood stove on a cold winter morning and heat some water to wash her udder. And I hated it. One morning she did not wake me. The calf had excaped and she was dry. So I seperated them and milked that night. And when I got done I turned both of them loose together. Thinking no more morning milking! Dad worked away. And I was the only male home. Nope my mother and sisters made certain to use every drop of the evenings milk as fast as possible. I was ordered to go back too milking twice a day. Lucky for me that milks cows hefer calf had just freshened. So I simply started milking two cows every evening and got to stay in bed until a decent hour. Wasnt long I went back to milking one cow in the evening. The weather had warmed up. And the females did not actually want or need that much milk. What they wanted was for me to get up at daylight and build a fire in the cold house. We Debbie and I last fall just sold the last of our cattle. including two milk cows.It just became to expensive to buy feed and took too much time. Im 70 and got better things to do than enable a cow herd and swap nickles.

My grandma balanced on a three-legged stool, leaned into the cow and rested her temple on the side of the cow. She didn't use hobbles or lock the cow's head in. She had 3 cows, milked at 4:30 a.m. and I think, evenings too. They sold the milk. It was put in the tall metal milk jug. A truck picked it up real early in the morning. I remember pouring milk into the pig trough too. Plus, we drank it and made butter. They told me I would get to milk too if I got up at 4:30! I was so excited that I woke up on time without any alarm clock, and ran to the barn. I got to try it that day.

Loved every second! I was even practicing along with you, milking. I think it's in my future. My husband's talking doing something else, after 40 yrs general contracting in far north California, he says he's done all he can to create here on this mountaintop acreage. I just listened. I always wanted to raise livestock, and these challenging last days may now have brought us to a 'place' to do just that, out of necessity and need for self-reliance (with the Lord, too, of course), and we want to be closer to our children and grandchildren. We have a lot to learn, and you can show us how, Pa.

God thinks of EVERYTHING, doesn't he? And Tulip likes your banjo as much as my youngest son likes my cello. Well, can't say as I blame him, I just started playing it, so... I'm no Yoyo Ma, that's fer darn sure.😏

Hello there. Do You really think, it's "from old times"? I used to do this from 1995 till 2015. After that, I've got married and moved to city. Now I am reconstructing our family farm, and in two years, We'll move in, settle down, grow some on fields, and in four years from now, I am going to buy some cattle, pigs and poultry again - and wait till I get old :D :D :D

This video couldn't of come at a better time. Today, my very first milk cow will be delivered to our homestead. I've never milked a cow before but since she's in milk and bred I'll be taking a crash course. Lol. I have a question, though. Why do you put milk on your fingers to strip her out? By the way, I've loved the series on the diary cow. You've got one beautiful cow.
