First appearing in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in the form of the USS Reliant, the Miranda-class would go on to be built in large numbers by the Federation. Introduced in the latter half of the 23rd Century, Miranda-class starships would be part of Starfleet for the next century--despite the fact that they had a tendency to meet tragic ends. In this video, we document the many appearances of the Miranda-class, including the Soyuz variant design.

Wouldn't the red shirt of Starfleet be like the Oberth class or the excelsior class more than the Miranda? Or would they all be red shirts?
@JohnDiMarco
@JohnDiMarco 2 года назад
@@GrEyPrEiSt I think all three classes could qualify for the label.

@@GrEyPrEiSt I agree in the Oberth class, but the Excelsior managed quote good, at least in the scenes shown (U.S.S. Lacota), but the Miranda didn't had that much luck 🤭

Seems like DS9 was the unofficial home of the Mirandas. Seen a lot of them there more than almost any other series so far. They are good ships, albeit older--but still useful. Thanks for this compilation.

Excellent compilation. I don't even want to know how long it took you to make this video. Oh, yes I do. Great work John.

Thanks! To be honest, Memory Alpha is very helpful for research by providing lists of things like every episode a Miranda appeared in.

I think the Miranda has only been given a bad rap due to years of it being the ship that hurt the Enterprise and from that point on has always been that one ship people loved and hated. So it became the red shirt of starships at least as people referred to it as. I see it as different. I see it as that one plucky ship design who's ability to fit any mission profile allowed it to survive into the modern era as a semi-front line ship and explorer well the Constitution its larger stablemate retired or was regulated to light duties. The Miranda and the Excellsiors as the Federation/Klingon cold war ended were the last in a line of war time era ships. The Miranda designed to pretty much support the Constitution and in many ways was better with its module design allowing it to perform any number of jobs and its profile made it compact and hard to hit, perfect for a warship. I could see a Constituion leading the charge and a Miranda acting as support laying down photon torpedo fire to wear down a target at range. That being said. Such a ship would have been looked down upon by the anti-war federation especially after undiscovered country so it was likely saved by federation officers and practical people who pointed out that the Miranda could perform the roles of other older ship designs, and due to being essentially being a jack of all trades could perform exploration and its more militarized form be regulated to patrols and similar as after all. Its not a constitution so its never was that powerful anyway. The Excellsior was naturally Star Fleets most advanced starship. They weren't going to drop that model as the most impressive ship in the fleet so they naturally kept it and like the Miranda built more of them. The Miranda did smaller duties as that one little ship that people couldn't figure out what it was doing still flying around and the Excellsior models as they began to age still stuck around as well, even as newer models came into line such as the Ambassador class. The real reason was obvious. The Miranda's and the Excellsiors were still warships. They were kept in the fleet encase war broke out and I bet the captains of these particular ships were left relatively alone to foster some independence and risk. This is why I liked Lower Decks portrayal of the Miranda. Less as a red shirt and more of a plucky pissed off little ship when its not being thrown against something way beyond its capabilities, is more than capable of holding its own and why ships like the Defient, the Miranda, and perhaps the Centuar are literally inspired by it.

Miranda Class Starships are bad ass. And, on a side note "Project Genesis"?.....I didn't know Phil Collins was in Star Trek. :-)

Every time I look at the scene where the Enterprise and the Reliant enter the Nebula and the Reliant tries to keep the Enterprise from entering with a photon torpedo that flies very close to the Enterprise's starboard side but misses I wonder if anyone else does if that torpedo was responsible for the burn damage on that side of the secondary hull of the Enterprise as seen in Star Trek 3:The Search for Spock I mean it's only a guess but it might have happened as that torpedo came pretty close.

The Bozeman and her crew would go on to proudly serve for many more years. (Mentioned in TNG, All Good Things...; Generations; First Contact)

The Reliant was going to be a Constitution Class but changed to Miranda Class so the viewers would tell the 2 ships apart from each other in the battle but they both had saucer the twin warp engines etc but the Reliant design for the Miranda first came out the engines shown above the dish and had 2 torpedo launchers under the dish on pylons producer pulled the design upside down and signed it upside down so that was a happy accident so then they put the engines below the dish added a roll bar with the torpedo launcher in the middle with phaser cannons on the port and starboard side of the roll bar .

Great video, but you forgot that one time the Bozeman hit the Enterprise, and that other time the Bozeman hit the Enterprise, and that OTHER time the Bozeman hit the Enterprise... On another note, it's funny how the editing changes scenes. Data and Worf appear to be insubordinate, and Sisko appears to be abandoning ship before the bridge has been hit!

The Miranda is still better than an Oberth. The Grissom was blown up by Klingons without meaning to. Tsiolkovsky crew got infected by the Naked virus making them drunk. The Prgasus hot stuck inside an asteroid due to its Phase Cloaking Denice.

Um. You missed a scene from Star Trek II where Reliant enters orbit of Ceti Alpha V. And you missed a scene from Star Trek II where the Reliant attacks the Enterprise. There were two battle scenes. One in normal space and one in the Mutara Nebula.
