"The dub censored all acts of physical violence" I dunno man, the part where Yusei Shoryuken's the shit out of a jobber security guard is kept completely intact lol
They tried and failed to censor that though. They added white flashes at the moment of impact. Instead of censoring it, they added a level of badass to it. They made sure to remove all the rest instead of attempt to cover them up. The shoryuken one was a failed attempt at censoring.
@@No1AldamonFanGirl I always had assumed they must have censor baited a bunch in that episode to get it through or something. I'm imagining the translators fooling the censors by just being like "Yeah he just says penis 10x in this scene for no reason and it's pretty important." to distract them from that 1 punch.

I thought the "I would like some milk" phrase was just a codeword for the bartender to know that he's looking for Blister. Nothing more, nothing less lol
Same, I mean, I only watched the dub so can't say much for sub, but bolt literally told yusei to order milk specifically. So I still don't understand what the whole big deal about it is
@@mikeballa8285, I watched up until the end of Dark Signers for the Subbed, in the original Bolt never said anything about ordering milk with the card from what I remember
@@thewholehorse7140 huh interesting. I only watched the dub too so I didn't think much of it either it just made sense to me that he orders milk in the sub too because it's the signal but now you're saying that it doesn't happen in the sub that's strange, so the dub added what basically amounts to a diversion to make people not think the milk was their fault XD
Imagine being able to ride motorcycles and take part in a bike riding tournament, but aren't able to buy alcohol, also Yusei is too much of a good boy to drink alcohol
I mean most countries let you have sex, vote and join the military (where you could potentially take a human life) a couple of years before you can legally drink.
It's so funny how even in Japan this is a big scene and famous line from him, the Duel Links quote is there in both languages AND the recent figure of Yusei features an arm where you can add a glass of milk to display him with. Like what? A fully fledged expensive figure of Yusei - the first proper figure of him- has a glass of milk in his hand as an accessory. There's many Japanese made MVs (MAD is the Japanese titling of it) where people remix dialogue into music from the show, and so many of them include the "milk" quote because it's a meme in the original language too. It's not just the dub and how we perceive it as you said yourself, it's a massive thing for Japan and I think it's glorious. How a serious and mature (if not legally mature) character just asks for a glass o' milk in a dodgy bar after just being in jail and fleeing the cops, to hunt for his bike and eventually duel to save his friends and the entire world... 5Ds man.
I just image the person doing it being like oh great a bar let's see how much we need to change. That alcohol to orange juice, that scene were he picks him up edits it and out and oh great he's gonna order alcohol well um change it to milk I guess. "I'll have some milk." What!! Are you kidding oh man that's a good 20 dollars we don't have to use to change it!!
@@digitaltailsmon4096 Etheir that or... 4kids never actually translate the og dub and just do what ever they want. They saw that the glass look like milk and decide that's what they'll go with XD
Well, you dont know when enemy gonna attack you, so drinking is not really good for street fighter like yusei who constantly in a fight. Also driving, playing card game & drunk doesnt belong in the same sentence...
I've always found the idea of Yusei as an adult ordering milk cause he genuinely enjoys it so endearing lmao. I have my own headcanons about the sort of nutrition he might have had in satellite and alcohol being more accessible even for minors given the circunstances the city was in at the beginning of the series. I also don't think Yusei would be an avid drinker either? these are just headcanons but yea.
Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have even thought it was a change. Yusei walking into a bar and ordering milk seems like the most in character thing ever.
This reminds me of Ace Attorney, where they frequently use "grape juice" as a fancy drink and it turned out it was not a localisation change from wine in the Japanese version. The same with Detective Badd and how it looks like he has a cigarette in his mouth, which fits his gruff old detective look, but it's then revealed to be a lolly pop.
Yusei is the true boss, I also thought this was a dub joke (because I watched 5Ds dubbed first because I didnt knew Sub existed til Zexal) So as I watched 5Ds subbed I laughed so hard that it was true. Also yes this title is strange, correct but strange XD
Drinking age in Germany: 14 - If your parents are with you. 16 - For undistilled alcoholic beverages (beer/wine) 18 - For distilled alcoholic beverages
@@ventiehegobrr7331 I mean...I feel that drinking anywhere is fine as long as you're at home. Is not like that cops actually enforce that underage drinking law much other than when buying or selling it.
I actually thought Yusei was 20-23 years old in the show because his demeanor & overall design made him seem older in my opinion, never would have guessed he was younger
He seems older because of the circumstances he grew up in. People tend to have to grow up fast in impoverished areas. They don't get to be kids long. Mentally, I'd actually age him to be early 20s because of that. Physically, he's 18 at the start of the series.
Imagine in the end of the series, he goes to the same bar, legally considered an adult, looks the bartender straight in the eyes and says "I'll have some milk"
I love how the milk line is an actual quip you can throw at your opponent while playing as Yusei in Duel Links (if you play it with the Japanese VO’s).
I'm pretty sure he was told to present the card and order milk as a password to look for the guy. Can't exactly say out loud "hey I'm looking for so and so" as he's being tailed.
The Yusei figure made by HobbyJapan actually comes with an optional hand holding a glass of milk. I always assumed since Yusei was trying to get in contact with someone that's supposed to be hard to get in contact with, he had to order the milk and show the card because no one would order milk at a bar, especially a shady back-alley bar like that. Himuro instructed Yusei to specifically order milk. My guess is that if Yusei was older the writers probably would have had him order a very specific drink or ask for it to be made in an unusual way.
Its a funny, quirky scene. It resonates through other media too, the Amakuni figurine comes with a hand holding a glass of milk. If you take him milk in tag force, you'll get a happy smile and he says "I love these."
@@yato7030 he is a bad character theres nothing about it very little character development it really doesn't make sense to me how people like him and the thing that really pisses me off is when people compare him to yusaku come on people yusaku is 100 times better than yusei
@@ooofthedegenerate maybe people like him because is a good person and not annoying. Also how is Yusaku better than him? Yusaku unlike Yusei had room for development but barely changes during the show, and warching him was boring because the Duels in Vrains were too predictable and Yusaku didn't like duels, I mean at least one can have fun with Yusei because he likes Duels but with Yusaku duels are like a funeral (you must stay serious all the time because the game isn't made for fun, I guess)
I read the milk scene was a reference to Run&Gun (Yusei's VA, Yuya Miyashita's band) "Believe" music video where someone is drinking milk (maybe Yuya, but I'm not sure)
I don't remember anything from 5Ds as I haven't watched it since I was little, but this scene is honestly so funny to me because there's now a Yusei figurine of him holding a glass of milk.
The ultimate power move. Everyone in that bar was dominated by Yusei’s alpha milk energy. I’m fairly certain the reason he orders milk was to shock viewers, and be like “Yusei is so cool that he doesn’t need to drink to be cool. Not drinking alcohol is badass!” Or something like that
Joke's on you, I watched the sub first. I've actually never seen this scene dubbed before, because I've only ever seen a few episodes of 5D's dubbed, and that was enough for me. Sub is superior, period. Also, as far as Yusei ordering milk goes, I figured it was a case of "cool main character doesn't drink alcohol, because cool people don't get drunk." You know, a bit of subtle messaging to the kids that might be watching.
@@soulburnerlv1337 It's mostly said as a joke here, as I realize some people will preffer the dub. However, as Dylan mentions in this video, the dub censors and changes a lot of things, to the point where I think they are basically different shows, and while I love 5D's as my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh series it is the Japanese version I love. Same goes for all the others. The originals' dub made for good memes, and GX had a good thing going for a little bit in its dub, but to me there has never been a Yu-Gi-Oh dub surpassing, or even getting close to being equal to the original Japanese version. Also, I'm a sub elitist across all anime.
I started rewatching 5D's in the original sub since the dub cut the final group of episodes. I watched that scene and thought it was weird that the original did something like that.
I knew as I watched both sub and dub all the time every other year. Also of course he likes milk. Have you seen his girlfriend Aki. That joke will probably get me beat by Martha. Also he is Japanese superman/batman who are known in the comics to not drink alcoholic drinks to stay very fit and yusie needs all the milk to beat up people even in the dub
I wonder if this is a troupe, Japan tends to substitute Milk in places they want to put alcohol. Japan doesn't actually drink as much milk as western countries do as many japanese are lactose intolerant (or at least japan has a higher percentage of lactose intolerant people). I'm remembering plenty of animes where a glass of milk was had after a hot spring bath, and the legend of zelda majora's mask has an entire milk bar.
The drinking age in Japan is 20 because that's considered being an adult. In January they have a holiday called Coming of Age Day (seijin no hi) where special ceremonies are held for all the people that turned 20 in the previous year.
I remember watching Sumatto's Yu-gi-oh VR video featuring the first 3 protagonists, and wondering why Yusei said the "I'll have some milk" line at the end. This explained a lot (For clarity, I didn't watch much of the 5D's anime, so I didn't get to see the whole milk scene)
oh man. i clipped this scene and put it on my channel, partly cuz i couldnt find it subbed anywhere but mostly since i wanted to show a non yugioh friend. and my god you have no clue how many people i get in the comments confused about that clip, despite the fact i put a joke in the description about japans legal drinking age godspeed yugioh everything.
WAIT ACTUALLY. IS THIS MY CUT OF THE SCENE. WAIT. SAME SUB... SAME VLC SUBTITLES, SAME LOW QUALITY FROM RU-vid KILLING IT, SAME LIL BLACK BAR ON THE SIDE. NONE OF THE FOOTAGE USED IS FROM OUTSIDE OF THE SMALL CLIP DESPITE THE FACT THAT I CUT IT AT A WEIRD TIME.... THE FACT THAT THE REASON I POSTED IT WAS CUZ I COULDNT FIND IT ON YT.... finally. my monumental contributions to the yugioh fandom are being recognised....
Oh my god. Like I had an awful day and this just made it a whole lot better. Like I cannot.just. comprehend. Yusei is old enough to go to jail. But not old enough to drink alcohol HAHAHAHAHA
3:44 Correction Yusei starts as a 17 year old 5ds main protagonist but it does seem a bit unusual for a bar that usually serve liquor to serve milk probably a better manly beverage choice tho😀
And this scene and the line “I’ll have some milk” is referenced in Yusei’s taunts in Duel Links Also milk kinda references irl racing as it is the ideal choice of beverage to have at the victory lane and Turbo Duels are a racing-type of sport
Legal drinking age in Europe varies. Northern countries it's 20, west and east countries it's 18 and dead-center, like Germany, you can even buy beer at age 14.
You know, I'm watching this video only 2 days after I started watching 5D's for the first time and I watched this episode I think a few hours before this video was posted. It's a good thing I'm subbed to you, because if not I'd have some serious concerns about how RU-vid knew I was just watching 5D's 😅
This was expanded on in the crash town arc in the subbed as kalin drank and a lot to people got drunk in the bar as a party where Lawton notice yusei runner was missing
I remember in a series of videos in Niconico douga(a japanese video site) about 5ds weird lines in every arc Yusei asking for milk is among line they pick and one of the top ones in the rank of weirdness
I didn't watch 5D's in Japanese, but I read that the milk order was kept from the original (on TV Tropes). I was a little surprised, but it made sense as an unusual order that was code for something else.
