The Missed World Building of Star Wars Droids

After my recent Episode IX rewrite, which took a long time, I decided to do a quicker video based on some observations I made while catching upon a lot of the Disney Stars content I've missed.
In this video we explore why aren't droids to be trusted, and does it make sense the way that droids have been employed in the Star Wars franchise so far? I'd argue, no.

I like to think some version of this video exists in-universe by a disgruntled Star Destroyer security technician

I love this kind of speculation - please do more of it! It's good to see how we can rethink star wars with just simple concept changes or reframing

Actually i'm pretty sure droids over time develop personality quirks. Or just a personality overall. Hence why they go through regular memory wipes. Most people don't typically allow them to go around without regularly wiping them. People would probably notice that r2d2 isn't his sarcastic self. Leading to an inspection. Tampering could still be a problem. Bit still.

Surely R2's sarcasm _comes from_ developing a personality (i.e. not being wiped)?

Exactly! Also for re progamming you need to succesfully caputre a droid, and that's not easy, because when you capture it will immediatly send a distress segnala to the owner so they know that they are in danger. Let's take for example a mouse droid, those things immediatly make a lot of noise when they see an intruder and make notice to the authority. Or like probe droids who literal purpouse is to let know if there is something the empire is looking for

I don't think it's too unrealistic for the empire to use droids on the death star despite their security risk, being that they provide a necessary convenience when operating rhe complexity of a moon sized ship, in the real world government agencies use cloud storage despite risk it posses security wise, and yes there is the odd leak from that but it provides enough a convenience that the slight security risk is a worthwile trade off in their eyes

man this video is really underrated. Youve got great content here and I expected it to be a much bigger channel but upon looking at the comments there is nothing here. Keep up the good work man, its really honestly great quality. Youve most definitely earned a new subscriber

Thanks so much! Yeah I mean the fact that the feedback I get on my videos is generally positive gives me hope that I do just need that one video to really pop off and that should ratchet up the subscribers! Just gonna keep plugging away at it this year and hope something comes of it!

Hey Really like your Video, but the one part about “Why did the CIS use battle droids if there not that great”. It’s simple, the Clone Wars on a soldier to soldier basis is Quality( Clones ) vs Quantity( Droids ). Sure the battle droids aren’t that great, but because the CIS has the backing of the corporations they can produce them in Billions and Trillions. The Republic can make plenty of clones too, but even if not on the same amount the Quality of clone soldier is better than the droids, the Clones were trained very well.

At 4:42 I say "we've never seen a reprogrammed void spontaneously revert back to its original programming" I was trying to remember if this is contradicted by the Season 3 Mando episode where battle droids keep glitching out, but I think I remember correctly that actually that's because they're being sabotaged, right? I finished my Star Wars marathon over a month ago at this point, and I don't want to rewatch the Jack Black and Lizzo episode of Mandalorian.

Yes, those droids were being sabotaged by "nepenthe," the oil they were imbibing at their cantina which had been seeded with nanoparticles meant to screw up their programming. (The disturbing part of the show naming their "beverage" nepenthe is that this is a reference to the Odyssey, where it's a drug meant to be a remedy for pain and sorrow. Obviously it's just supposed to be superficially analogous to the droids having their own bar with alcohol-like substances to mimic organics, but it's extremely ironic and poignant given that the show chose to depict the droids as content with their status as enslaved beings, rather than call out the fact that they're exploited and lack autonomy. While the droids themselves can't complain about their lot due to being programmed to be content, the entire episode treated the seeming utopia as ideal rather than fundamentally flawed due to exploitation of not only droids, but underclasses like the Ugnaughts.) To get back to your point, no, this wouldn't contradict your statement, as this particular instance was due to tampering. You're so very valid in not wanting to subject yourself to Jack Black and Lizzo in space again LMAO. Happy to help you avoid that psychic damage.

Yes, Christopher Lloyd's character has been deliberately sabotaging the planet's repurposed battle droids to manufacture a problem and force the civilian population to abandon their use of droids since they're become lazy and decadent

I’m pretty sure the reason Star Wars militaries don’t use lots of droids is because droids are expensive, you need to manufacture a lot of them, and if they break, you have to make new ones

@kcreviews8161

Uhm... I'll go searching for your comment in the previous video, because I'm not sure if I saw it! I like the Burton Batman movies. I think they're fun and nostalgic. I also like the idea of really stylising Gotham as more than just basically New York, which is how it's presented in for example the Nolan films. But what I really like is the way in the animated series they have the whole 1940s aesthetic combined with contemporary computer technology. I'd love to see more Batman stuff like that. So aesthetically and socially it would be like 1940s New York, but then technologically Batman can still have all his modern gadgets. Also while I'm talking about Batman, I didn't really like the recent movie. It felt like a parody of the Nolan films in terms of just being so ridiculously dark, and the plot progression at the end felt sort of silly. Something I love in superhero movies is the double life aspect, so I like the idea of having Bruce Wayne the smarmy eccentric socialite, and Batman the dark scary crime fighter. Obviously the recent film didn't really have that at all.

From my understanding droids do actually develope personalities if they are not memory wiped which can conflict with their true programing. Thats how you get droids like R2 that can sceme and out wit real people but it makes them unreliable and hard to control. Also droids became very unpopular due to them being more expensive than people and their tainted reputation from the clone wars which would only help to drive support away from the faction. Battle droids were used only because they were cheaply made in large quanitities which can have the ability to overwhelm the opposition but they end up being pretty dumb and incapable on their own. Lucas was actually going to explore droids in the sequels but we'll probably never see it fully realized.

What's your rationale for it being apparently "easy" to reprogram a droid? Are we ever given a look into the process?
@kcreviews8161
@kcreviews8161 4 месяца назад
It's admittedly just based on a few errant lines like when Owen says in episode 4 "I want you to take that droid and have its memory erased" which to me implies that it must be a pretty simple process if in the middle of a dump like where Luke lives changing programming is made to seem pretty uncomplicated such that a random moisture farmer with few resources can have it done short notice. Also when they reprogram C3PO so he can read Sith. HOWEVER, I think if I were to critique myself, you could say that these are shown to be more akin to a factory reset, rather than a complete reprogramming. So maybe I was wrong to suggest that reprogramming a droid to completely change allegiances is quite an easy thing to do. Although, I'd still say that even if it isn't easy, it's hard to imagine it wouldn't be at least still possible for an organisation with more considerable resources

@@kcreviews8161 1) A memory wipe isn't "reprograming" a droid, it's as simple as doing a factory reset on your phone or computer. 2) C3PO wasn't reprogramed to read Sith, he already knew how to read it but the New Republic actually reprogrammed him to prevent him from accessing that data, they didn't "reprogram" C3PO they did a factory reset to bypass the NR's new code as it wasn't there when he was made by little Ani.

An interesting concept, but it seems to rely on galactic history being no more than a dozen centuries. Droids were invented at some point in the past fifty years, took off as a fad for a while, and then were completely abandoned. Trouble is, I believe even Disney's reboot keeps the original age of 25,000 years for the Old Republic. Droids have arguably been around for significantly longer than that, among the cultures that would eventually unite to become the Republic we know. As for reprogramming, if you've got rebels running around your secret military stations and tampering with all your droids, you've got bigger problems with your security than just those droids. There are certainly droids that have been modified and have a secret allegiance, such as the RA-7 Death Star Droid. These were built by the Empire as mediocre protocol droids for their officers: a gift they were obliged to accept. Their actual purpose is to spy on Imperial officers and report back to the Empire. Other examples involve taking a 3PO model and building an assassin or espionage droid into its shell. However you go about it, to subvert an enemy droid... you're basically building a new droid, and installing that into the original chassis. Something to keep in mind is that for the intelligent droids, they're effectively people. It's not trivial to brainwash a droid that's truly loyal into changing sides. The way we control them is with the restraining bolt: a plot point in the original movie is Artoo having one installed by the Jawas, but keeping his free will and loyalties. Holding the droid caller just forces him to either freeze or come towards you. He can still try to trick his master into removing the bolt by playing part of a holographic message. Notice that Threepio has no strong loyalties, and doesn't protest having his own restraining bolt. You can try erasing a droid's memory, but that only gets rid of loyalty that was built over their lifetime: an Imperial warbot would be hardcoded to side with the Empire, and resetting it to factory settings won't make it join the Rebellion.

Pretty cool video but my one criticism is how you make it sound like anyone can reprogram a droid by just pressing a button on its back or something. Out of the thousands of the droids in the movies we only see a small handful of reprogrammed ones, and I don’t remember them ever mentioning how much work has to be put into reprogramming them. The imperial droid from Rogue One may taken large team of engineers working for months to get it working correctly. Also I don’t know why the empire wouldn’t just have some kind of cybersecurity system to easily stop or tampered with droids when the technology already exists today
