British Gothic band The Mission debuts in 1986 with the album "God's Own Medicine", "Wasteland" was a big hit in 1987. This is a extended video version.

This song is wisdom and a warning. I faked my age at a goth club in L.A. back in the early 90's. I danced to this....This song was still playing strong back then and I feel it will go ' Main Stream ' sooner than later. Some heavy days are on us and I feel like the 80's underground music warned us it would be this way.
It was the Mission's first major crossover hit,blasting into the Top 40 of the UK charts at number 24 and peaking at number 11 the following week,in late January 1987. I'm sure it was probably referring to something else but I equated it with the post-industrial wasteland up and down the land left by the economic scarring and Thatcher government policies of the years leading up to that time.
Being able to listen to the Mission UK was the only thing that got me through my 6 month naval deployments at sea! I cant even describe how lonely those were. I would find a place on the bow to listen to this song and stare into the sea.
Absolutely. So many waves of diverse & original sounding music. Goth, Rock, Indie, New Romantics, Punk, Heavy Metal (& the New Wave Heavy Metal), Dance, Electronica, Northern Soul..... Endless. So much positive energy despite some pretty bleak periods.
Damn, I wish I had a time machine!!! Dancing till the sun came up listening to genius music like this!!! The 80s was a fantastic time to be alive and young!!!! Super time to be around in crazy 20s for AMAZING talented musicians at the time. US "late Boomers/Gen Xers" have AMAZINFG talent and creativity! All orginal. AND radio never played all undergound or pirate radio later nite.

This song reminds me so much of one of my other favorite bands of the time...Echo and the Bunnymen. Oh, how I wish people were making wonderful music like this nowadays. My only hope is that I have introduced my children to my old alternative music so they can keep the fan base going.
It was far more limited as far as gear goes, and in a way I think that forced people to be creative as far as filling up the "space". Totally love that stuff too.

My first serious boyfriend made me a mixtape with this song on it. I still have it. Nearly wore it out. Saw them back in ‘87 with the Psychedelic Furs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this extended version of the video before. Thx.

I listened to The Mission while I was at university, especially while doing a module on gothic literature. The lyrics are truly gothic in the literary sense. I love the insistent pounding of the rhythm section and how the guitar adds subtle soaring highlights... and Wayne Hussey's voice, obviously. Great stuff!
GREAT band. I miss the purity and beauty of 80's music. And the deep lyrics inside the tapestry of Mission's music makes me wonder why they arent' as big as the biggest bands today.
Most gothic rock is simply too intelligent and deep for the masses to be able to comprehend, let alone accept. Don't wonder, this is seriously the answer.

The older I got all over these years the more my stubborn will grew to leave it all behind - this job, this wife and those kids - and fill the tank of my old bmw bike up to the limit and ride it to the sunset till I find Mad Max and his gang somewhere out there in the wasteland to live my life as it´s meant to be.
So much better than the talentless crap that is about today. Can't even call it music. 80's was such a great decade.That's main stream chart music I am refering to. Not the metal/thrash/punk bands that are turning out some great music.

Sin lugar a dudas los que planteas amigo, una voz mágica y superlativa. La banda posee una trilogía mágica con sus primeros 3 albumes, pero sin dudas "Wasteland" es una canción que más que canción es una experiencia vital (me puse hiperbólico, pero eso me pasa a mí). Por cierto Peter Murphy, también vocalista del mismo género y amigo de Wayne Hussey, posee un timbre similar...ambos unos tremendos artistas con mayúsculas.

Thanks for posting this, I have seen them live about five or six times in Germany, starting in 1988 in Frankfurt I think. Great band, great songs, great sound, nice guys, especially Craig Adams always friendly and helpful with the fans. The Final Chapter, God's Own Medicine, Children, Carved in Sand, Grains of Sand, Aura, great albums. No grave concern for repercussions... Oh the 80ties...
I saw them in 1986 Leeds football ground, u2. The fall, the mission, and the pretenders on Bill, what a day the mission stole the show were even better than u2, jumped the cue and was at front by the stage, epic day!!

Seen The Mission at Wave Gothic Treffen two years ago, first Goth Festival. First overseas Festival, First time seeing The Mission, bloody brilliant, had to wait till I was 45 to experience all three, but well worth it.

Zen Burt - I wouldn’t say it’s much of a sore point anymore, unless you’re the eternally butthurt Eldrich! The Mission went on to be a hugely better band than the now redundant Sisters of Mercy. Typical example of a band with one egocentric and self-important member that thinks he needs nobody else to continue. Yes, they had 2 more albums but what’s the date on that last one? Early 90’s? He’s the goth equivalent of Axl Rose. He’s the only person important in his life, which is fine until he realise that actually creating music isn’t as easy as just being someone! You need creative talent too which obviously dried up very quickly after the three other original members left and formed The Mission, taking their songwriting skills with them. On a side-note, it’s funny that originally the follow up album to the Sister’s debut was to be called The Mission. Not only that but before they settled on The Mission as a band name they successfully released an EP under the monkier ‘The Sisterhood’, much to Eldrich’s protests. He even tried to legally block the release but ultimately lost that too.
