The Epic fantasy novel The Mist of Avalon takes place during a time of great change in Britain. It is a story of love, and treachery, magic, and betrayal. The novel is told from the perspective of Morgaine, a priestess of Avalon. The Story follows several different women through two generations, and their influences on the men around them. In this time the old pagan way of life is being threatened by the rise of Christianity and the gateway to the mystical land of Avalon is closing. In this world, the beliefs of men have a direct impact on the reality of the world. Because the old ways of the goddess are being forgotten, the bridge between the worlds are disintegrating and each journey to and from Avalon becomes longer and longer.
The conflict between the old Pagan ways and the rise of Christianity is at the very center of this story and drives the narrative forward. Britain is very much divided, between those who live under the one true god Christ and those who keep the old ways.

That book is one of a few that I find deeply sad. Maybe because it is a story of the demise of an old culture in favour of a new one. The other notable book that gives me the same feeling is the Silmarillion, and by extension, Lord of the Rings, because likewise they have big themes of the passing of Ages.

I wept so hard at the end of Mists. I was young at the time in 8th grade, but I remember the similar feeling of the end of an era- there’s actually no word I can find for the odd grief.

I want to still love this series. As well as the Darkover series. But knowing the horrific monster MZB really was...pedophile, serial violent abuser, incest...i just can't read a single word she wrote, now. Which is unfortunate as a reader because this is the best retelling of the Arthurian legend, imo.

I was so moved by the story when I first read it, but knowing what I know now, I find the idea of reading it to be nauseating.
@AliciaNyblade
@AliciaNyblade 4 года назад
Learning the truth about MZB was hard for me because when I first encountered "The Mists of Avalon" through the mini-series and later the book, both meant a lot to me and helped me on my spiritual path. It was heartbreaking to learn of not only the horrible things she had done, but to see the effects they had on her daughter. Her daughter, from what I've read and seen on RU-vid, has become extremely bigoted towards the LGBTQ+ community, Pagans, politically left-leaning people, making them all guilty by association because her parents happened to be in those groups. It's really sad that, rather than seeking full healing and proper professional help for her trauma, she's instead gone down the path of scapegoating entire communities for the monstrous acts of her parents. She's also become a hardcore Catholic, which seems super ironic to me given the Church's well-publicized, infamous cases of child sexual abuse. Of course, I don't blame her for any of these things, as everyone reacts to abuse differently, it's just tragic to me and seems to indicate she hasn't found peace yet, and I sincerely hope she does.

I didn't know about what she was/did until very recently (few years ago i found out about her husband, but I was kind of in denial, i guess? And then last month i found out about the whole thing and had a huge crisis. Didn't try and re-read Mists again (and I've been doing it every year since 2001) cause I'm afraid i won't be able to separate things in my mind. Which is really sad, cause it's my favorite book series

@@KassWinnie I have to think that Bradley was channeling from a greater source when she wrote the book. It's so full of wonderful ideas about women, the old religion, a classic fantasy tale, etc., that it seems hard to believe those things could come only from the brain of such a horrible person. I tried to re-read the book and all I could picture was MZB unwinding from a long day of writing by doing gods-know-what to her child. It was an especially troubling image to me because I'm a writer myself and after a long, productive day, I unwind with a good dinner or a hot bath or a few drinks--you know, things normal people do. I could never picture myself closing my word document for the day and turning around to do unspeakable evils that completely contradict what I'd just written. At least an author like, say. H.P. Lovecraft wove his own asshole-ish views into his stories. Bradley presented this wonderfully egalitarian world in her depiction of the old religion, showing Avalon as a place where children are brought to be trained to their best strengths, of their own free will, where no harm comes to them. But once she stepped away from her typewriter . . . ugh, it's just awful to think about.

I am glad you are covering this. I am probably not going to read this series due to the allegations levied at the author by her daughter for sexual abuse so I am just glad to get a nice overview of what this series is all about. EDIT: After a thoughtful conversation with the gent down below I've decided to change my statement. As I do not believe in censoring my own mistakes I'll leave what I said above here unaltered. I am glad you are covering this. I am probably not going to read this series due to my preferences in the fantasy genre, and plus on a more minor note, the author has been accused of sexual assault against her own daughter so I am just glad to get a nice overview here on what this series is about. END EDIT

I read it as a teenager, and reread it last yer, 20 odd years later. It wasn't as good as I remembered and certain things about the writing irritated me, though I loved the story's pretext and points of view. However I knew nothing about the things you mention, and having now found out what the accusations are I have to say I am sickened, and had I known I would never have reread it - especially as I was nursing my baby daughter at the time. A truly horrible story about Bradley.

I think you are making an assumption about my personality that just isn't true (I find someone accusing me of all people of virtue signaling as humorous), and while I I am not really appreciative of the slightly hostile tone you have taken with my comment, I will say it has made me think on my stance on this for a moment. If we were being 100% truthful here, the real reason why I won't read this is because I am not fond of reading Arthurian legends. It just isn't my cup of tea. And while I do indeed care about the allegations levied against the author (considering a lot of the evidence and accusations seem credible), I realized in saying such that I have put myself in a bit of a hypocritical position since I read Lovecraft, who was widely known to be a racist. Now, if we were going to rank atrocities in a hierarchy, I would say that sexual assault is a few rungs higher than Lovecraft's closet racism so I actually still may well be within the right in saying that I will not read the works of an alleged rapist as determined by rules I place on myself that are in line with my own beliefs, BUT that still doesn't really excuse the content of the original comment which was typed in self error. So I will restate my stance now that I have thought this through a little more, what I meant to say was, "I am glad you are covering this. I am probably not going to read this series due to my preferences in the fantasy genre, and plus on a more minor note, the author has been accused of sexual assault against her own daughter so I am just glad to get a nice overview here of what this series is about." So whether you intended to or not, give yourself a pat on the back. You managed to shift my stance on this.

lol at ur denial of virtue signalling in the same message as talking about victimhood hierarchies. i think u'd really enjoy this book- it moans about hierarchies, male dominance, it's anti-christian a bit- there's probably even a rape scene so u can wring ur hands vicariously at the toxicity of masculinity... pretty sure my assumptions are near the mark.

I just made a blog about this on Amino and how there are parallels to be found in The Song of Ice and Fire story, especially regarding Rhaegar, Arthur Dayne, Ashara, Lyanna, Jon and Dany and Dawn. It is clear that Martin was influenced by MoA also. He did not copy of course but there is a clear connection between the Arthurian legend and the novel and the Tower of Joy story plot.

Haven't read this in probably over 20 years. Jumping ahead in the story (um, spoilers, I guess), when Vivienne is dying, doesn't she have a vision or something of past lives that show her it was she who has always been Uther's mate, not her sister, and she laments getting it so wrong this time around? It's something like that, right? Like getting the connections wrong in this life led to Avalon disappearing in the mists? I've often thought a similar idea might be playing out in ASOIAF.
@chooseyourpoison5105
@chooseyourpoison5105 4 года назад
It's not when she is dying, but when Uther is dying that he appears to her and she recognises him from a past life. Vivienne herself is murdered years later by Balan in front of Arthur's throne. If my memory serves, at the very end of the book, Morgaine realises that she didn't fail Avalon and the Goddess has not abandoned mankind, but simply wears another face as Mary the Virgin.
@chooseyourpoison5105
@chooseyourpoison5105 4 года назад
Also, have you read the prequel, Lady of Avalon? It's about Viviane's life as a young woman. As a priestess in training, Viviane meets the Roman chief Vortimer, who ends up dying in her arms of sepsis. Same thing happens, she sees his face at the moment of his death and realises that they knew each other in a past life and she didn't spot it. So her vision of Uther at his death is actually the second time she's failed to recognise her reincarnated lover . I mean, come on, get it together, Viviane!

I am over the moon! I just sat down finally to relax, finally, It's been a long day! Saw a new upload from you. Which always makes me happy, and it happens to be one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time! I have read it to many times to count and always pick up something new with each re-read. Seriously, I have so many books and this is one that I will never get rid of. I lent it put once and never got it back. So I bought a new copy, and won't lend it out again! It's so unique, I love that it breaths new life into the Arthur legend, told by the women in his life. I think one of the things that strike me is how complex the characters are. Particularly the women. As a women, and a avid junkie of all things concerning the Middle Ages:) I think how horrific would it have been to be a women at that time? A women was basicly a man's property. I have even read that quite a few women entered the convent because ironicly enough they had more freedom as a nun! I am also struck by the paradox that even though this was their reality, there were women who broke those molds, or tried to and were exiled, thought crazy, unnatural, and even martyred. Despite, being treated as such they did have power within their station as they influenced the men in power. You know, behind every great man is a great women;) Thanks so much for the analysis, you always do a fab job! Are you going to do a part 2?

It wasn't bad, though it did trim the story back quite a bit. It's a long book that even a miniseries can't cover all of.

You're making me feel old, Quin. I read this in the mid-1980s when I was in my early twenties. Taliesin is pronounced "tallyessin", btw. There was a film based loosely on this book, but I'd advise you to avoid it at all costs.

Cardinal Doomsday. Ahh. I kinda enjoyed the movie. Some great actresses. Nothing compares to the books tho.
