People more dedicated than me have figured out formulas and processes and have decided to share them on the internet. For that, I am extremely grateful.

I tend to be pretty stubborn about finding my own way, to the point where I will use up a lot of time to go a short distance. There is value in doing that in that it can help you own the processes that you learn as opposed to being spoonfed. There is authenticity, muscle memory, integrity and a complexity to your understanding that you get from taking that journey. However, these days I tend to visit other people’s wisdom and knowledge first and then I try to use that intuition of my own alongside that information. In other words, I find the wiggle-room within convention to make my own connections and signature moves. It allows me to take less time to arrive at the tools and results I want, and it still has my own stamp on it.

I have a degree in music with an emphasis in music technology, but I'm seriously considering buying this course because of how awesome this video was. I'm obsessed with doing things efficiently, and I keep making the mistake of thinking I can make music faster by just doing it instead of watching tutorials. Great video, I love everything about this.

I love the analogy. I woke up one Saturday morning and thought... "nothing else going on today, Imma learn to solve the cube" 3 hours later, I had a method. now I can solve it just over a minute. This really put stuff into perspective for me.

I like the idea Joe.. for me it's all about balancing the principles and maximizing quality at each stage while at the same time deciding for yourself what's good enough and when to move on. i totally agree with GIRATS & the 5step mix process, and it can be hard to know when each thing you do is at a desirable level of quality, enough so to STOP working on that thing. anyway, you taught me the principles that i hope to one day release music by, so thanks

Joe, you always make so much sense. This was a great analogy. I want to learn from anyone who can help me achieve my goal, better and faster. To play better, record better, and mix better music. A video that I would love to see someone (preferably you) make, is a totally in the box, and out of the box recording and mixing of the same performance. I'm sure a lot of "in the box" guys would love to see/hear that. With inexpensive interfaces ($500 or so), and plugins as good as they are now, can anyone really hear the difference between the same song recorded using a $50k/100k board and expensive outboard gear, compared to, lets say a PreSonus Studio 1824c, with 8 ADAT channels added. I would pay to see and hear a comparison like that. Thanks, Joe! By the way, I solved the Rubik's cube a few years back, using the same method as you... 🙂

Wish I had RU-vid or Internet as a kid. I ended up pulling the stickers off to solve my Rubik's cube. Cut and paste I guess you could call it 😆. Grateful for your videos so I can quit pulling the stickers off of my music.

“Doesn’t necessarily mean you can just reverse engineer that” Yes! Finally somebody said it. Here I was thinking for years that I’m just stupid because people always say “listen to the songs you like and reverse engineer them” and I’m like well I would if I knew how…. The advice is like telling someone who wants to build computers to just look at an iMac and reverse engineer it. Um, you can stare at the internals of an iMac for DECADES and NEVER know what you’re looking at, let alone how it’s put together.

Great analogy Joe. Graham Cochrane, yourself and Ian Shepherd taught me some algorithms that I use to this day🙂

This is great. I’ve been watching your channel for years and there are things I agree with 100% and there are things I disagree with, but that’s how it goes with anyone I suppose. I always enjoy seeing a new video uploaded. Putting these two together is brilliant and I think it will help a lot of people realize even if they’re having trouble, they can get there. Thanks for passing along all the knowledge that you have.

As an “ear player”, this is exactly right! Many times, I was sure I could figure out a keyboard part on my own. After getting frustrated, I would find a RU-vid video that showed the actual method! Seeing how it was done saved me the trouble of learning it wrong!

A rubik's cube is like putting music together, where you can't just assemble one side, then the other. It doesn't make sense. Here's the real algorithm for putting it together: 1) White cross. 2) White side. 3) Second layer. 4) Yellow cross. 5) Yellow side. 6) Last layer.

Do you touch on recording acoustic harmonica and mixing it? That instrument is a pain to record and mix. Amolified Chicago sounds is easier as it is similar to electric guitar. But accousitc harmonica? Damn!

Absolutely! Graham Cochrane was the dude who did that for me, with his videos and courses. That was years ago, and I still employ his techniques.

Just because you know what a thing looks like assembled absolutely does not mean you know how to assemble it.
