Just to clarify - the solo you see in the intro is taken from a video lecture in my new Udemy course. So the PDF attachment is part of what you get when you buy the course. The same goes for the other 8 mode/scale based solos that appear in BGP Part II - they are all fully transcribed and broken down in the PDF attachments that accompany them.

I saw one of your tutorials about 5+ years back explaining scales in terms of "binary" numbers - just learning the intervals of 1 or 2 frets / semitones. I thought it was such a neat idea and so useful. This new (to me) video is the first I've seen since then and the same clarity of thinking is there. I really liked the technique of bending the minor third almost up to the major third as a pivot from minor to major pentatonic. That's the sound I've been searching for so thank you!

Apart from all the pentatonic mixolidyan transposed seventh flat 3 combined with major and minor, this is one of the most beautiful and well played melodies I have heard in a long time. Thank you for posting, teaching and perform so well !

this is exactly wat I'm working on, adding that minor to major third and replacing the 7 with a flat 7 to get that mixolydian sound, never realised combining the major and minor pentatonic gives me those same intervals, great insight for me here, thanks

just a small detail in a otherwise very informative video, what most of us do when play the minor 3th is actually bend it 1/4 tone to be blues 3th. The blues 3th is a mid way between the flat and the major 3th, it's what we simulate when we hammer on from minor 3th to major 3th. What I am trying to say, not in the most concise way is bend the minor 3th to match the pitch of the major 3th is an extra effort that not necessarily get you the best results, just a touch of bend is the way to go.

honestly, do it! I have been self taught for 2 years now I wouldn't say I'm a natural talent, although music runs in my family, but I am committed to the instrument and like learning about it, and this is what this course is about, if you practice enough you'll be able to rip that solo easil by the time you finished his course, also you can expand your own playing style and transcend even further it is just so nice

I think you mean the "slash" scale
@stanlee5465
@stanlee5465 6 лет назад
and doesn't a scale only exist if you play it in order from low to high or vice versa? So when you're soloing and just using 'random' notes from the scale (notes which belong to other scales), then are you playing the scale from the key of the song, or if you start with the 'second' note from the 'regular' scale then are you playing in Dorian, rather than Ionian (starting at the root note)??
@RossCampbellGuitarist
@RossCampbellGuitarist 6 лет назад
Stan Lee I don't know where you learnt that but that's definitely not the case. You can play a scale in an infinite number of ways, it's not just low to high or vice versa.
@stanlee5465
@stanlee5465 6 лет назад
Sorry I just wasn't very clear. A 'full' scale is just a group of 7 notes (and usually those notes also belong to to other scales) right? So if you play a scale 'in order' starting and ending on the root (C to C for Cmajor), then is that considered the Ionian version of the C Major scale? And if I play in order from D to D then is that the Dorian mode of the Cmajor scale? And then, what mode am I playing if I use all of the notes of CMajor, but play them in a random order (ie. F,G,A,C,D,E,B)? And if I just for example play a solo with the notes f,d,c,e. then am I playing the C major scale, or the F Major scale? since those notes exist in both scales? I guess it all really depends on the chords you're playing over, and the rest of the song? Sorry, think I might need to find some private lessons to ask these types of questions :). Thanks for posting the lessons , they're a help at least for clearing up some of the mysteries of music :)
@81ghale
@81ghale 6 лет назад
It is 100% dependent on what it is you're playing those notes over. The chords dictate everything really. Just playing a bunch of notes strung together without anything playing behind them are just that, a bunch of notes.
@eddieneal9920
@eddieneal9920 6 лет назад
Totally depends on what chords you're playing over. C major (Ionian) is Ionian when played over a C maj chord progression. Learn what that really means. The C major chord progression is C, Dm,Em,F,G,Am, Bdim and C. That is a C major chord progression. Playing any of those chords together with C as the tonal center, then playing the single notes of a C major scale makes the scale Ionian. If you just play the notes of a C major scale by themselves with no chords it's still going to sound like a C major scale, no matter what note of that scale you start on. Try starting with D. Ok, you would think now Im in the Dorian mode. Just do it without any backing chords and I guarantee it's still going to sound like a C major scale. The notes will still want to flow and resolve to C. Now try D, E,F, G,A,B,C and D over over a simple Dmin chord vamp(one Dmin chord and nothing else) and now that succession of notes sounds has the Dorian sound and feel. I would advise learning chord scales in both major and minor keys. Then you really know what key youre in. When you the chords in a Dmin scale, you can create a chord progression using chords in that chord scale and solo over it using D dorian. Same with all the other modes. Learn the chords in that mode, then play any progression of those chords, then solo over it with the appropriate single notes of the scale.

@RossCampbellGuitarist
@RossCampbellGuitarist 2 года назад
Because the lesson is not about the solo - the solo is merely an example of the topic discussed. That being, how to combine the major and minor pentatonic scales to effectively improvise with 'mixolydian' in a way that is more conducive to playing solos that sound 'musical' when thinking modally. I have plenty of other lessons on mixolydian based licks etc elsewhere on my channel, try this for example Try This MIND-BENDING Mixolydian Lick... | Spicy Licks #18 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rRKnOrSIWSc.html

@@RossCampbellGuitarist the solo is what gets ppl to watch it's the carrot being dangled imo ppl wait through whole video thinking that it will be broken down which is better for ad revenue if ppl watch all the way through a vid. Imo if your goal was to teach and not advertise for your course u might breakdown the riff and explain how it works in the mode u are mentioning in the title. Most ppl can just slow the riff down n learn it regardless it just frustrates ppl and makes them move along to the next youtuber
