THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL It is more of a daily personal diary, or perhaps a vlog, centered around the building of plastic model ships. Don’t be surprised when I unexpectedly, but usually just momentarily, get into something completely unrelated. I was big into building models years ago. Apparently I’m trying to bring back “the good old days” by building plastic model ships. In this series I’ve already built ---
Trumpeter’s 1/200 scale Bismarck
• The Model Ship - Part 31
Trumpeter’s 1/200 scale HMS Hood
• The Model Ship - Part 519
Trumpeter’s 1/200 scale HMS Rodney
• The Model Ship - Part ...
Trumpeter’s 1/200 scale USS Iowa
• The Model Ship - Part ...
Now I’m building Trumpeter’s 1/48th scale U552 Submarine
• The Model Ship - Part ...
Also in this series I’ve built a very large model ship case that will hold up to five 1/200 scale ships.
• The Model Ship - Part 482
I was thinking of adding the very popular 1/200 scale Yamato to my stash, but later realized that it would likely be too much for me … but we’ll see.
Feel free to learn from my mistakes while I muddle through this.

Ron, The light is red. They are turned on when the sub was on the surface. Regular light could shine thru any open hatches and the sub could be spotted at night. Also men preparing to go on watch would spend time in the compartment with red lights so that their eyes would quickly adjust to nighttime before they went on deck. Banged into a lot of things when the red lights were on during my Navy career. They also could be on after lights out at night and during General Quarters when the regular lights were out of commission. Also could see a little better with them in smoke-filled compartments and passageways. Press On!

Ron great video, I have sent a email showing my lifecolour WW2 paint set for my submarine build. And your right there’s no rush at all. I have my torpedos ready to start my build next Friday. Happy modelling.

Ron, the light you were discussing, {the one near the deck} is an emergency light. I served aboard aircraft carriers during my time in the US Navy and those type lights were intended to provide emergency lighting to facilitate personnel's movement through the ship and other activities during extreme situations. Whenever the normal shipboard power went out, these lights came on automatically. They were placed down low near the deck to help with personnel's footing during emergencies. They came on when the emergency generator was brought online. And, yes, they had red lenses to help preserve personnel's "night vision. There were also "Battle Lanterns" placed much higher on the bulkheads that floodlit critical areas. These were battery powered and came on automatically when power was lost so were more reliably available during emergencies {until the batteries died, of course.} Cheers from Montana. Stay Warm !

Thanks, Ron. Yeah, that was the intrepid Ninja Warrior (who needed his Mom !) Keep up the Great work on both your models and your photography. PS: I heard a good one on the InterWeb that made me think of you yesterday. It was about this latest cold snap that is reaching WAY South, even into Texas.. This guy said, "HEY, Canada ! Come get your air. It's drunk and raising the Dickens down here !" Cheers from Montana, where we are expecting to climb above 0 deg F today, (Fingers crossed !) @@roncalverley

Hey Ron I couldn’t get the Mr C 104 Gun Chrome in Texas or Tenn hobby stores so I’m using Tamiya rattle can TS 83 for the decking. It makes the grating pop. Z24 and G6 are shown as H18 28 Metal Black. I used tamiya flat black. I’m currently on step 54. If you take 2 aspirin, every bulkhead and part is called out in Paint and Marking Guide. The problem is you have to flip around to find them. The bulkhead and parts on your step is on page4. You mentioned painting the grate a few coats of the grey. Just wanted to say the guide calls for black but as we know it’s our builds and we can paint them whatever we want. Thanks for Missy video. I smile every time you treat her. Mike

I was thinking that the light low down by the floor near a door would be emergency lighting. If lights were knocked out or there was a fire the crew could still make their way through the boat.

Plausible, that's for sure. BTW I'm planning on passing on to the viewers your color matching app. Will mention it in episode 1865 tomorrow. Thanks! 👍

It looks like that deckplate is patterned like Durbar plate/diamond plate. In its unpainted state it would be a dark metallic colour, like the Tamiya F56, the raised checks turn silver with wear (drybrush?). It also looks like the paint guide you have shows the deck with rust marks.
@roncalverley

Hi Mich, Yes, an unpainted metal deck in a sub would undoubtedly be rusty, that's for sure. 👍

Since Christmas we received 14 inches of powdery snow this weekend with 40 to 50 miles per hour winds all this light snow will blow around again causing Blizzard conditions. Tomorrow our high will be -3 Fahrenheit (-19.44 Celsius) with dangerous-40 Fahrenheit (-40 Celsius) windchills. 🥶 Hopefully we will warm up to +4 Fahrenheit on Tuesday. 🤦🏼‍♂️ The only nice thing about cold weather like this is seeing the Sun Dogs. Stay warm!

Ron, on your paint reference sheet, I noticed a call out for a light blue, Humbrol 175. It looks close to your xf23. Perhaps you meant to substitute the 23 for the 175. Rich D
