Read this long personal consideration of mine. I started with modllism that I was 13 years old, we are talking about 55 years ago, I started with dioramas of World War I and World War II winning many national competitions, then I switched to model airplane building gliders, which were difficult to build because you had to pay attention to weight distibution, 3 years ago I started with designing and building artificial lures because I am fond of spinning fishing. Two years ago I started again with model airplane but static. Then I saw you with ship modeling and got hooked. The first (cheap) models were a total disaster and to learn I would rebuilt the same model until I built it almost perfectly, the ones I got wrong I kept in sight to learn from my mistakes. The last model I made was the Lady Nelson, on which I had also been on the rebuilt vessel, but...but...my wife to show it to her grandson, dropped it from the second floor; it held up well enough but the stern was destroyed, now I am trying to repair it and I am sure I will succeed
Thank you very much for such a long comment))) My first model also survived the shipwreck. My kitten climbed onto a shelf with books, and then fell together with the shelf and books onto the table where the model was standing. Embracing the galleon with all 4 paws out of fear, he also fell to the floor with it... The repair was long but successful. Although the steering mechanism has become static)))
For the second time, you’ve given me headaches from me slapping my forehead and yelling “DUH”. That little trick with the rubber bands and clothespins is simply genius. I’m about to attach the keel to frame of my Constitution and this will come in handy. Thanks! Angus in New Mexico
That is an absolutely outstanding work done there Olha on cleaning the copper plates :o This looks sooooooooo much better now, was really worth the job don there. I love the little trick with the rubber bands to hold the keel plating, never would have thought of that, thanks for showing us this, will be useful !!!
Olah, you have excelled yourself once again. Now, I am catching up with the video builds that i have missed out on. By watching 👀 this video, I thought you were going to do a complete rebuild of the copper plating. Great work that you have done ✔️.
Well done what a amount of work until the Model is ready in all his beauty. Have a nice weekend a peacefull christmas Time and a blessed New year 2024 Yours Frank Galetzka
Hello Ohla, as always a great pleasure to see your expertise at work. The rubber band trick for the keel is quite ingenious. The colour of the replacement tile is a bit lighter/brighter than the existing one. Is there a way to help this (maybe chemically ?)
The chemical way is not worth it, because after a few years the opposite will happen and this part will be too dark... After 3-4 years, this copper will age on its own under the influence of ultraviolet light!
You have showed us all again a masterful treatment of restoring this model...i have learned so much from your various videos, thank you! I have one question, once real copper plates are installed what are your thoughts on the final finish? Do you prefer a gloss dinish or a matte finish for the copper plates? Which is most accurate for a historical presentation of the copper bottom? Thank you for your time in considering my question.
Thank you very much! In general, it is best to use cellulose lacquer. Under a layer of this lacquer, copper plates age naturally in 3-4 years, without the use of any fake patina. But before applying the lacquer, it is necessary to clean the copper well from all possible fingerprints (they are not immediately visible, but they can appear in the process of oxidisation). So I use a precious metal cleaning fluid like jewelers use. Also, copper can be polished with scotch-bright, steel wool, etc...
Petersson shows the basics for this type of sail (issue #052 of the shipmodelers' library playlist - Rigging of period ship models by Lennarth Petersson - Square-Rig). But more details can be found in the anatomies of ships. Depends on what are you building?
