Not so fun fact. Had a bad mental health decline in college. Very bad. Saw an emergency counselor on campus who gave me a list of psychologists in the area to see. We picked one with good reviews and I went. The woman was an astrologist who spent most of the session bragging (again very first meeting with this "psychologist") about being a former astrologist to Hollywood stars and told me that the next time I came in, I needed to figure out what moon I was born under for my treatment. Needless to say, I did not return.

If it wasn’t expensive to go to an astrologist posing as psychologist, I would give all false dates and plantes information and let the person scramble nonsense for days about me, let them keep digging deeper until finally revealing the truth. I guess my issue with astrology is less about what other people believe, and more about my frustration with people trying to apply that frame of thinking to me without my permission, and attempt to explain or predict my behaviors using astrology. For example, they'll say "It says here that because you're Aquarius that you are a patient person". I'll say "I'm not a patient person, I yelled at someone in traffic for braking at a red light" and they'll insist "No no no, I KNOW you. You're definitely a patient person, let's see what else this says..." Like, they view reality through this restrictive lens, and are willing to tell you that you're wrong about yourself to convince themselves that astrology is different from whatever religion because LOOK this is PROOF. Everyone of these uninvited comparisons takes a year off my life, I swear.

Okay... are the operating on the locations of the constellations based upon when Vega was the North Star? As currently, with Polaris being the North Star, Aquarius would have somebody be born between Feb 16th and March 11th Now... a Capricorn would be Jan 20th and Feb15th... and yeah, Capricorns are incapable of committing Murder-1 and instead will do Manslaughter Also... who the fuck says Aquaripodes (that strikes me as the best plural) are patient? An Aquarius will push a person into a Punji Pit and claim they fell. Aquaripodes are just good at MASKING how upset they are

Astrology is a desperate way to find identity and in a world where nobody seems to know who they are anymore.
@digitalbrentable
@digitalbrentable 2 года назад
I'd say it's more about finding narratives in a world where storytelling has been relegated to entertainment and rituals have been left by the wayside. Capitalism services the need for identity well enough through cultivated consumer identity (e.g. Star wars fan, metal head, yoga freak, vegan, crossfitter, gamer, rock climber, etc). Symbolic narratives have pretty much always been a part of human culture and spirituality, the hard materialist and consumerist bent of our current socio-economic context has displaced that, resulting in individuals spontaneously seeking out and creating this missing rite independently.

@Sub. Sa. Great points, especially on the narratives, ideology, and mythology native to capitalism. Though it is materialistic, it isn't really 'materialist' or at least not primarily - to a large degree liberal capitalism is very much preoccupied with ideal notions above material concerns and outcomes. I agree that community is a vital component of traditional folk practice's, spirituality, and ritual. But I do think that the narrative element plays an essential role in helping the conscious mind contextualise itself within and then navigate the social and conceptual reality. Myth is a critical part of this, and the material grounding of myth simply isn't relevant to the concept or its function.

i think astrology is popular because science has revealed how bleak, cold, and terrifying the universe can really be and, since the morals of ancient religions aren’t always gonna hold up against modern values, a new, less morally judgmental spiritual alternative is what a lot of people were looking for astrology is a great fit for that, because it doesn’t have any strict commandments but still implies that the universe is sorta made for us and is looking out for us, but i think that the universe doesnt need to be spiritual to be beautiful, and it doesnt need to be magical to be wondrous, its a great big cosmos out there and its amazing enough as is

I agree. Astrology does seem more a replacement for religion. I would also argue that the idea of an intervening god is a bit much to believe in in this day and age. How could a god, for example, allow the Holocaust to happen? With astrology you get, as you say, a universe that may or may not be looking out for us, but is also more limited in its power.
@Gamingderpmonglers
@Gamingderpmonglers 2 года назад
I disagree that it's "less morally judgmental." I've been abused and gaslit through partners and friends attempting to presuppose my character traits, and often being extremely cruel with their assessments of me that were extremely incorrect. The most common replies I get whenever I tell them that they're wrong about my character is, "Sometimes other people know you better than you know yourself," and "...Are you sure? *sarcastic laugh*." This obviously isn't concerning people that merely dabble in Astrology or use it exclusively in their personal lives, but those that actively proselytize it in the same exact way as Evangelical Christians (just a different name)-- ascribing essentialist traits about your character predicated on divine revelations beyond our understanding that we don't control. It's like, if a function of their belief is flawed or doesn't work, they have to manipulate either the information or YOU in order to /make/ it work instead of admitting that they were wrong. It's a form of self-victimization that undercuts actual victims of toxic behaviors excused through religious means, and like many other popular religions, it's not always simply a "personal isolated matter separate from the religion itself." I'm an Aries, btw, if that tells anyone what kind of offensive "assessments" I've been receiving, especially shit like I'm "angry" or "forceful"-- like I have autism & agoraphobia, I'm the opposite of that. It's ableist as hell.

Freud and Jung didn't split because of astrology. They split because of a difference in theories of sexuality. Freud tolerated Jung's fascination with the esoteric, but it had nothing to do with their relationship ending. Jung knew when he published his first book that it would create a rift between them, and even held off publishing the book for some time until his wife convinced him to do so. Freud's Pleasure Principle is key to his entire psychology and a main force driving the PP (pun intended) was the libido. Jung believed it was only a secondary force, and not the main stimulation.

But the problem, in my humble opinion, is that a person who might be open to believe in anything unscientific/unprovable might be more vulnerable to believe in more dangerous unscientific/unprovable ideas if presented in charismatic manner through a convincing speaker. That's where the real worry is for me.

Unreasonable beliefs pry open the back door to your critical mind and allow other irrational ideas to creep in, while blocking the front entrance that should let facts filter in. Belief in flat earth, for example, might seem like a quaint idiosyncrisy, but most flat earthers are also antivaxxers. Beliefs like these are usually sustained through conspiratorial thinking to explain away dissent and any apparent incompatibility with reality. This can promote disengagement from society and antisocial tendencies. The rise of QAnon in the wellness community through alternative medicine and antivax should serve as a warning.

It's a thought provoking point. well I do like to read up on occasional astrological stuff sometimes,I don't cancel out the possibility of it being somewhat right or wrong. But like in the case of of flat earthers I choose not to believe them cause I put my trust in the more reaserched,certified source. I've not deminished their theory without knowing, I've heard their theories but they do not sound logical to me personally. So I think even though people can have believe or they like to believe in certain spiritual things without being completely irrational,I don't thing that has to mean they are completely unscientific or gullible.
@BlinkyLass
@BlinkyLass 2 года назад
@@sakuranovaryan9261 This is a good point, too. There are plenty of people who hold silly beliefs but who are able to switch to a different mode of thinking when doing work. People can compartmentalize. It's hard to tell though whether and which people will cross the line and go down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories when primed by bad ideas. The best we can do I think is to try to make sure everyone knows how to think critically and to make a habit of questioning irrational beliefs when we encounter them.

I enjoy tarot precisely because it plays around with the narrativism mentioned at the end of this video. I don't actually believe the cards are telling me some deterministic fate in my future; it's more that it allows me to 1) contextualize my life in a more mythic/narratively-satisfying way and 2) think about my life and the paths its taking through a new perspective. Plus, the vibes of a good tarot reading -- *chef's kiss*. Light some incense and candles, smoke some weed, get into the altered state while spending time with friends, etc. Similar to new atheists in the God debate, I think many skeptics of astrology miss the point of why many people seek it out. There may be a certain explanatory element to it for many people -- as in they believe it explains reality better than the alternatives -- but I think the core reason its sought out has more to do with an existential yearning for the spiritual. To vibe with something that can't be neatly confined to our modernist physicalist boxes; to directly engage with the mysterious like our ancestors did for hundreds of thousands of years; to tell our stories with a cosmic resonance so we don't feel as alone and disenchanted; etc. No, the planets probably have no effect on your personality. But goddammit, there is still so much to uncover about reality and spirituality will remain valid for as long as humans remain human.

And as we now know that all galaxies are giant heaps of stars and our own galaxy is WAY bigger than just the 5000 or 10.000 stars people can see with decent eyesight under total darkness conditions... why only the few stars people in antiquity drew lines between to make them? Why not sextillions of stars sorted by distance and size to determine the effect? As it is with half the planets or moons being "post astrology" discoveries and 99.9999% of stars never been assigned any importance the "art" is revealed to be all make belief and pretense.

You got the painting wrong in the beginning of the video. That's the School Of Athens by Raphael, showing Aristotle and Plato in the center of the painting. You don't see Ptolemy from the front, he's in the corner of the painting facing several other people. Astrology remains popular because people have an immense fear of approaching reality on their own, so instead of natural introspection they cling to anything telling them what to do. Jung's entire philosophy was centered around introspection and self-confrontation, which is the antithesis of astrology. He also separated from Freud because they disagreed on fundamentals of the ideas they were working on, and because Jung felt he'd learned everything he could from Freud.

Regarding the driving forces towards the rising appeal of astrology, I think there is a lot of crossover with the Anthony Giddens idea of ontological insecurity as a shared phenomenon of late-modernity. By disrupting peoples sense of rootednes in time and space, late-modernity disrupts our sense of both collective and individual identity. Not only does astrology provided a religious-like framework to make sense of the world as Munk explains, it also overlays an identity that cuts over class and race signifiers, in a way offering a cohesive identity at a time when nearly all 'traditional' identity signifiers are influx and invite critique. At the same time it retains and emphasises the supremacy of the individual that is essential to the function of contemporary capitalism. I would be interested to hear more on the gendered way society views astrology from this perspective. At least in my experience it is predominantly relatively affluent, college educated, white women, who are most vocal about astrology while most men I know are very dismissive off it. I think marginalization is very much a part of it but I wonder if this gender divied also refelctes the challenges of navigating rapidly changing gendered socail relations?

Astrology is far from limited to bourgeois white women, as the video mentions it huge amongst people of colour. I'd also say there's a strong correlation with the working class. Astrology is so popular despite its debunkness, you’ll find its merchandise sold within a science museum knowing they’ll make sales due to the lack of people’s capacity to distinguish science from pseudoscience. Interesting that many people that pride themselves as being critical of social constructs have a soft spot for something so obviously socially constructed. The most unfortunate part of it all, is that Astrology takes away from the real grandeur of the Universe. We live in an amazing place, this Universe of ours, and it's quite fantastic enough without needing people to make up things about it. Astrology dims the beauty of nature, cheapens it. When it comes to searching for a sense of spiritual enlightenment, the Cosmos is sufficient enough.

That one little detail is so important: In England it was illegal to predict the future FOR MONEY. So presumably the problem wasn't that Leo wanted to use astrology to make predictions, it was that he wanted to get PAID for it. So much for "enthusiast".

Astrology is a cheap scapegoat for people to deny mental illness and personality disorders. Like, I don't have ADHD. I'm an Aries!

Because it is. Just substitute stars for genetic markers with vague yadda yaddas about how such and such explains why you're a horrible person, and your life sucks. Who needs agency when you have 30 genetic markers for denial?

@@Roadiedave I understand. I said in another comment it was dangerous to dismiss astrology and offer up an alternative just as enticing and insidious. I think Helen made it sound as ludicrous as possible without outright denouncing their sponsor. Irony and satire are a dangerous game. I'm sure some people took Jonathan Swift seriously when he suggested Irish people eat their children. I also think dumbing it down would be condescending to their audience. Judging by the number of comments that picked up on and criticized the ad I don't think the regular viewers of a skeptical philosophy channel will believe it. There's a risk passersby might take it at face value but that's also true of any form of sarcasm, irony or satire. They basically took their money and made a video as close as legally possible to mocking them.

@@thompsonnoel I didn't see irony or satire in the ad read, and it doesn't appear that most of the people that were clued in to the woo aspect of the ad vs the woo aspect of the video saw it either.
