Just play the games fellas. Also, don't commit the sin of pronouncing Atelier with an "R" like I did in the video. I blame the english dubs from the Atelier games for teaching me that pronunciation lol.
I have tried at least two times with Rorona, but can't advance or get motivated because the story is so slice of life that it's get boring quickly All the games are like this?
@@elizabethalexgarcia2783 The Dusk trilogy is the most "serious" in terms of story tone but it still contains the typical Atelier Slice of Life moments. Though it does tone down the Slice of Life aspect, especially compared to Rorona and the rest of the Arland trilogy. Rorona is probably the goofiest entry in the Atelier franchise so it may have gave you that impression.
Hey Sadonrii, didnt a guy named toshiharu yamanishi compose for somd atelier games? He used to be a composer behind a shoot me up series called thunder force
@@Sadonrii Yes! Dude I've been trying to find this guy so I can interview him one day. He was one of the sound team members for Thunder Force 4 and that game is a masterpiece of a space shooter. He got me in to heavy metal and jazz in video games
@@zimon129 idk if you missed it, but you can hold X on an item in ryza 1 to convert it into CC in exchange for disabling it for the rest of combat. I never ran out of CC across my entire playthrough and only came close to doing so in the final boss.
@Duck Donald Ryza 2s itemsystem has it's own faults. Needing to build up your cc also means no itemuse at the start for a quick battle. Plus more hp-spongy enemies(which makes sense to allow you to build cc) made it feel way more grindy to me. Still liked it but overall i prefer ryza 1s battlesystem. That felt way more tactical for me(looking for the right timewindow to increase tactics level/rescourcemanagement of your limited cc and recharges/personal skills with more specific uses(stun vs dmg/etc.). On a different note: ryza1s design in general was a masterpiece. It was set out to feel like a summervacation with a certainty to end(klaudia leaving etc.) and it did. One does not need to like it, to see how good designed that was. Especially the ending if you consider ryza's main focus/dream in the beginning and where she ends up, while her friends... (cut because of spoilers) So bittersweet and nostalgic. Ryza 2 tries to replicate this but did not hit as hard (for me). Still a good game but after finishing it, i still think ryza should have been a stand alone. Part 2 did not do anything significant enough in my opinion besides giving me more atelier goodness. We will see where gust brings us next. Ryza 3(hopefully focussing on the "endgamearea") or a completly new series and maybe go back to turn based combat and deeper alchemy, at least for a time? Well with the mysterious trilogy coming to switch i will have plenty to shorten the wait. Even tough i didn t care much about sophie(did not finish it) when it released. I will gladly try again. Maybe i judged it too harsh following directly after the dusk trilogy. That way it had quite the big footsteps to fill. Plus firis seems quite my kind of game. (I miss time limits)
Trivia about Atelier Escha & Logy that nobody ever seems to notice. The Japanese particle equivalent to "and" is "to." So Escha & Logy = Escha to Logy. Eschatology is the study of end times... and the Dusk series is set in a world which seems to be fading towards its doom.
Oh me too. I remember when I was younger that's how I got into jrps outside of final fantasy. I saw some cool art work and played a bunch of cool jrps I probably wouldn't have hear of otherwise.
Hi, I’m Japanese and have loved this series since Rorona. I know Atelier isn’t famous in foreign countries, so have felt sad. I appreciate your effort to make this splendid guidance and love for Atelier. GUST developers will definitely be glad :) We still have awesome RPG series not famous outside Japan. If you have time and had played, please introduce Ys, SaGa, Legend Heroes. Those are truly amazing. Hope you all have good game experiences :)
Gust fault. Every Japanese company: "let's make both in English and Japanese, so anyone around the world will like to buy our products" Gust: "Maybe just dub some/few scenes? Nah, still too expensive. Better only sell on east. We can always try to add some fan services and sell there" Atelier have many amazing English voice characters (Sophie, Ayesha, Totori, Wilbell/Ceci) but Gust care even less nowadays.
Ys is one of my favorite franchises. So good, and it is gaining recognition. Legend of Heroes has gotten pretty big over here among RPG fans. I think SaGa has remained niche though, with mixed opinions on whether its any good.
@@MarcusAntonius-mv8bm I mean, they've got English text. I don't see what the problem is. But whatever, you aren't the first person I've seen with some weird hangup about voice acting. And if you to blame someone, blame Koei Tecmo. The English dubs stopped when KT bought Gust.
I recently played Ryza after watching this video and wanted to come back to thank you for your guidance with this series! I’m using your guide again to decide which title to jump into next. :) Appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into this video for all of us!
I’m really glad I didn’t stop at Ryza and decided to go the older games, I love them. I decided to go back one trilogy at a time, so I went from Ryza to Sophie to Firis to Lydie Suelle to Ayesha, which I’m currently playing. The moment you said you were going to recommend three titles I KNEW SOphie would be one of them, it really is one of the most well rounded modern titles.
Great video. Ryza was my introduction to the Atelier franchise, and since then I've played through both the Dusk and Arland trilogies. I really enjoy the laid back atmosphere they have, and the variety of characters in each game.
Pretty good video. Eventhough the Arland series is really hard to get into with how tough alchemy is and especially the deadlines to complete certain endings are. If you want to dwell deep into the Atelier series it's a good starting point to becoming a better alchemist for future Atelier games
I mean, sexy fanservice already was a thing since the franchise was born, just look at Marie's outfit. And she is the first protagonist of the entire series
Thank you for making this video. I love the Atelier series so much, but it doesn't seem popular at all in the US. I wanted a good video to help introduce my friend to the series and this is perfect! 💜 I hope more people give Atelier a chance!
This was very informative, as I have become interested in trying Atelier Ryza but had no idea where to start since I saw many different games in this series. Thanks a lot and great video!
I remember when Ryza launched on Steam, my cursor was adding cart on it's own. One of the reason why I had to jailbreak the vita as well, since we have 9 Atelier games on this abandoned handheld, and it's hella expensive.
@@treebush once you mod the vita following a guide, theres an app in the vita where you download any game youd like thats available which is virus free :p
Thank you for directing me on where to start and why in this very good video. I enjoyed your relaxed voice and the structure of the video (English isn't my native language) so you just got a new subscriber. My daughter started with Sophie and loves it, so I might go for Ryza. (I am 63 and need some relaxation after some heavy and dark action RPGs, and am very fond of Japanese art and Anime).
I'd definitely like to see a video on Mana Khemia. It was my intro to the series when I was a kid. In fact, it's been difficult for me to play the modern games as I much prefer the more serious story of it
Ok, you convinced me. I'm going to try these games, I was skeptical at first because the jrpg always bores me too much, but the alchemy system and the "slice of life to escape from all the reality bias" does sounds fun. PS: THE ART OF THIS FRANCHISE IS SO F*CKING GOOD AND CUTE
Bought ryza on sale. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to the Mysterious trilogy DX too. I’m never a fan of deadline systems(cause it makes me really stress in min maxing the time) so it’s nice to know that these two series doesn’t have em.
Thank you for this review. I recently played through Ryza 2 as my first Atelier game and now playing the first Ryza. I want to try the Dusk Trilogy next since it seems to be the most well liked group of the games before Ryza but was concerned about the time management. However your review puts it into perspective and it still sounds appealing. I'm not sure how this series fell under my radar back in the day. Glad several installments are available on modern consoles.
My personal favourites will always be Iris 2, Mana Khemia 1 and (not the same series but very similar in a lot of ways) Ar Tonelico 2 simply because their stories were really good, I was shocked to find out first 2 were considered the black sheep of the series in Japan
I remember getting into Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana way back then because I devoured everything anime style on the PS2. I had no idea the series kept going strong!
Hey a new video i can share for my friends , when they ask me about atelier i usually share the valkyrie aurora video but now that is gone , i like this , good video
1:37 I actually came to this video specifically because I was curious if any of the newer games were any good. I have actually only ever played Gust games on the Playstation 2 and own 6 titles. My entry into the series was Atelier Iris 2, I actually liked that game and thought it was a decent a game. The next Gust title I played was Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia, which is also a game I really liked. I own both: Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana and Atelier Iris 3, but I didn't like them as much as the second game, and actually never completed it, same with Mana Khemia. The next and final Gust game I would play was Ar Tonelico 2, I remember being so excited for this game, I had it per-ordered and the release was actually delayed but I was super into the website and reading everything I could about it, and it ended up being one of my favorite games of all, Luca is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, I love that game. Unfortunately, it was plagued by a really bad localization, so when NIS America announced Mana Khemia 2 (I was on their mailing list), it reminded me of how pissed I was at the botched, I unsubscribed from their mailing list. Outside of looking into Ar Tonelico 3 when it was released and then realizing it was a bad game, I never actually played it but it was pretty obvious it wasn't I wanted to play, I did buy the Hymnos Concert CDs though, because that game does have great music, that I didn't want to miss out on. So I haven't really followed anything Gust has done since then but have heard about Atelier Ryza a couple of times, and I'm like "oh yeah Gust, I remember them" I wonder if their newer games are any good or if they are still as meh as ever. So I typed Atelier Ryza and your video popped up. Based on what I have heard here, other than improved graphics doesn't seem like too much has changed with these games, so Ryza, or really any of them are probably not going to be titles I will enjoy too much. Honestly Atelier Iris 2 was probably a bad entry point since it's a lot more story driven than pretty much any of the other Atelier games, which is honestly more my style, probably also why I liked the Ar Tonelico games, 2nd game also had lots of lesbian subtext and was pro sex worker rights, stuff I had never really seen in a game before so it had been super memorable for me. So I was kind of hoping that some of their newer games might be something I would want to pick up and play but it's not really sounding like it. :( Oh well, thanks for the video.
Appreciate this as I finished blue reflection and felt attached to the art music characters and the RPG aspect, love magical girls so heard of this Erie’s but didn’t know where to begin... so thank you very much!
Glad my video helped! Btw the artist that made the designs for Blue Reflection also did the art for the Arland games of Atelier such as Rorona and Lulua. I'm sure you'll notice the similarities.
@@Sadonrii I definitely saw and was intrigued... I think I will go with the newest instalment tho as the sequel will happen soon! I am intimidated by deadlines and as much as I loved majoras mask the time loop and getting things done hurt me XD but man I’m so tempted to make my own magical girl RPG because there needs to be more! XD
Atelier Ayesha is also a good one to start with (I recognized the music in the background btw lol). It was my first one at least It also has the time limit mechanic even after you finish the main story (which there is a reason for it). I can guarantee that unless you know what you are doing, you probably won't finish first playthrough. I got to the first major boss (there are two main line bosses that I call "major" bosses) and beat it when the game ended. The second time I saved so much time that I finished all the side stories pretty easily as well after the main story ended. My next playthrough I'll have a lot of time reduction and may try to beat the side bosses that were a pain to defeat. Btw, despite me not playing it in the last 2-3 weeks just to have a break from it... I AM STILL ADDICTED TO IT. Sagittarius is best boss theme ever. Atelier Ayesha has a really amazing sound track. Love it. Also the characters are nice and well... I have had a game like this in like... Ever...
I'd say Atelier Ayesha is the pinnacle of the series, in terms of music, gameplay and characters. The Arland trilogy is great, a few dull moments but overall excellent. Ayesha just perfected it and refined it to its best state.
The best introduction of the Atelier series to me is the *anime adaptation of Atelier Escha and Logy* ; I just randomly watched "a just finished anime title"; that's how I discovered Atelier series specially my favourite Atelier Ayesha (she so gorgeous and lovely herbalist). I'm also hook up with Atelier Ryza as well ( I got a copy of 1 and 2) so I definitely going to play Atelier Ryza 3 next year when they release it
Popping over here since Atelier Sophie 2 just got announced 4 hours ago. :eyes: Ryza was my first entry into this playing series. I actually stumbled across the artbook while on the internet and the whole aesthetics intrigued me. So I looked into it more and it seemed like my type of game. Gathering, hoarding, crafting, some battles, and an interesting story. Needless to say, I 100%'d the first Ryza game LOL. The whole time constraint thing that the older games had did deter me from trying it but after completing Ryza through and through, to the point of buying Ryza 2. It makes me more confident to trying out other Atelier games. Hell, I'm buying Sophie so I can be prepared for Sophie 2. ^^ The biggest thing I had with Ryza was that I hoarded too much stuff and I'd spend ingame days getting lost in the craft. Thankfully there's a desynthesis system that helped get with of storage bloat, only for a short while before getting sidetracked again.. The whole real-time battle system did trip me up but as you play more, you get used to the rhythm so where you can easily layer combos of item buffs and special attacks. Overall, Ryza is 100% a good entry into the series and would recommend it for people who like perfecting their craft to the point of maxing out their gear/ items. (I was actually introduced to Escha and Logy because I watched the anime while it was airing at the time. The end cards per episode really made me love the whole setting and style. And then I was surprised when I saw something I've watched years ago be a playable series haha)
It looks like a great series to jump in. I adore the aesthetics of each different title. It's just to bad for me that I can't see myself playing in the foreseeable future.... it's nothing against atelier, but I done got my hands full for a seriously long time thanks to Nihol Falcom...I don't think I have to say much else other than one of these days I may get to play a Atelier game. Maybe.
I learned about the Atelier series while playing a rhythm game. Someone mapped the battle theme in Atelier Sophie (Spring Wind Skylark iirc). I did some research, got interested, bought the game and had fun. I bought Sophie 2 this year but I'm looking forward to play the other games too. Now I just have to save up some money to buy them.
Thank you for this! The games just suddenly popped up on my switch lockscreen and looked so cute but the number or games and title scheme was a bit overwhelming. I just purchased Ryza and added one of the trilogies to my wishlist. (:
@@Ricnard2410 the dlc method they did in ryza is mostly new extra areas and character episode unlike their previous mysterius series (firis to lydie&suelle, sohpie dlc are dollmaker only) to lulua were you have to get soms characters through dlc which is bogus as hell that alone with their 60 bucks to get the game first.
Great video. This was really helpful for me since i'm really interested in getting back into playing the atelier games for the nintendo switch. I did play atelier iris 2 and 3 for the ps2 back when i was younger and i really enjoyed it too. I'll start with the dusk trilogy first for the nintendo switch, then I'll buy the other atelier games.
I know it's simplistic but in all honesty one of the major things that get me interested in playing new games and games series is how good the opening music is. If it sounds really catchy I'll definitely look into it. That's how I got interested in both the Kingdom Hearts series and the Persona series and I never looked back since.
I just recently started playing atelier ryza 2 and I am really enjoying it. What’s funny is when I first saw the trailer for it I thought it would be terrible (mostly because I don’t play these type of games and I play stuff like red dead redemption and God of war). I was so wrong about it and now I want to try out other atelier games like the mysterious dx bundle coming out soon for the switch.
I love to play JRPGs. Been looking into the atelier series for quite some time, but never tried it. Just bought Sophie DX on my Switch (I could've bought Ryza on my PS, but I think I'll like more if I play on handheld. Also, my country eShop doesn't have Ryza :/ ). But I'm really excited! Will try as soon as I finish my current game! Thanks for this video!
Well yes, Nelke is a spin off. Even though it's not part of the mainline series, it's still technically a modern Atelier game so I might as well have mentioned it's existence.
Its great too see many people came know the series from ryza hopefully atelier become more get recognize its great game for chilling My first atelier were iris one best series i play on ps2
I discovered this series by searching for the most expensive discounted game in the Nintendo Eshop and I found Atelier Sophie 2 and now I'm genuinly intrigued what the series is about 😂
Loved the first two ryza games and Im so hyped for the third one. I've been thinking of getting Sophie for awhile but I cant afford to get the full version so Im waiting to see if I can save up for it
I got ryza 2 as my first atelier game, its so great! I didn’t need to have played the first one, since the back story is actually mentioned quite early on. I just got sophie 2 and its different!!! Like, more difficult somehow. But i will keep at it because its got a good story i think. I will def consider escha and logy next. I like the art style for that one very much.
Ok ok I'll get Ryza 1 for my switch from my closest salary. Been thinking about whether should I or not for like a week by now, and finally made up my mind. Thank you for answering questions I didn't even form into sentences
Yeah if you want no time limit the places to start are Ryza, Lydie/Suelle, Sophie, Shallie etc. If you do want to try the time system ones, try Firis first, you only need to get some items and pass an exam to end the sequence. It is more of a semi-time limit.
Very well explained for a 13 mins video, good job! I have a question about the main story/characters: which is considered the best one/your favorite between the 3 you suggested? And in the whole series?
Thank you. If I'm going to be bias, Sophie is my favorite out of the 3 games I suggested. I also personally like Escha & Logy more than Ryza since I don't mind time management stuff. As for the whole series it's hard to say since there's nearly 30 Atelier games in total and there's certainly some interesting characters.
You should definitely make a video covering the older Atelier series. I only played the three games from Atelier Iris series (and Eternal Mana was my favorite one) and I’ve recently started playing Atelier Rorona. The time management system wasn’t as intimidating as I thought, maybe because I was already familiarized with synthesizing from Iris, but your video really got me excited to play Ryza. It looks so beautiful! And Ryza 2 looks even more beautiful. Not to mention the ATB battle system, that really breathes fresh air into the series
i got into the Atelier series when i walked into my local GameStop when i was younger and found Totori's Premium edition on the shelf and thought the art was so good i just picked it up without a second thought lol... it was rough, as it was my first ever game that had a time management system and i never actually finished it! but i loved the art and music so much, when Sophie came out and i heard it dropped time management, i was super excited! i did just pick up a PS3 and another copy of Totori again, so ill hopefully finish it this time around lol.
Did not know Gamestops carried Premium boxes of Atelier, that's interesting. I also got into Atelier by picking up Rorona off the shelf of a Gamestop years ago as well lol
@@Sadonrii yeah, the GameStop I grew up with always had a lot of people never pick up their pre orders and the limited editions just got put on the shelf lol, picked up a Fate PSP premium box about a year before Totori, and recently picked up Senran Kagura collectors edition
I remember being interested in the series back in 2012, but I was turned off by the time management and reading about how restrictive it is. In late 2020, I started the Arland Trilogy, and found out that there is more than enough time to do almost everything. It might not be enough to do everything in one playthrough, but it is more than enough for me to achieve the good endings, I also spent many days just sleeping to make the time pass quickly.
The Iris trilogy was my starting point in the series and I just love how the series progressed with time. And yeah, I would agree with Escha and Logy being a good starting point. Deadline is so lenient there (just finish the main assignment and the rest of the allotted period is gucci), combat is kinda beginner friendly, and the story is good. No wonder it’s one of the better received games among the franchise, even now.
Well made of a video! It convinced me to purchase Ryza 1 since it’s on sale but skipping Ryza 2 for now despite the sale, cause I can’t afford 2 games at once, even with sales lmfaoooo. Gonna play through Ryza 1 first before waiting for Ryza 2 to go back on sale
I dropped dead laughing at the "warning for future viewers" as I'm literally sitting here contemplating getting Ryza 2 for the 1st title I try 😂, dude's forsight is 10/10!
I just watch this video was thinking about playing sophie dint even know Ryza existed so now I’m thinking of starting off with Ryza since that is what you recommend I’ll check it out thanks good video.
i had atelier ayesha on ps3 since my dad bought it from japan i think its one of the freebies he got, and i played it since its the only disc i had, i was 14 then and i had a great fun and memories, then an atelier ost just popped on my recommended and i fell in love again
I started with Totori, great game series. Ps. This game series has going since the 90’s and also sparked a spin-off game in 2006 called Ar Tonelico (which has a killer soundtrack).
Ar Tonelico is not really a spin off but rather a different project by Tsuchiya Akira, which was supposed to be a TTRPG concept but became a game, which explains why the world building is so beautifully detailed. But yeah, the Atelier series is much older and now we get to experience the very first one with Marie getting a remake
Thank you for making this video! After looking at it, I'm planning to get both Atelier Lulua & Atelier Ryza soon. However, I'm curious whethe is there a time-limit system in Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World before I decide to purchase on it
My first game was Sophie in which I saw in a GameStop around its release date and bought just for the fact that it’s graphics looked pretty and I love turn based rpgs. Was so pleasantly surprised w the alchemy system, thought it was new and refreshing. Completed the game and forgot abt the series until I saw ryza 2 in stores and now I’m starting from rorona and working my way up by release date lol.
I started the series a couple months ago with the mystery trilogy and I'm loving it. Played Sophie and Firis which were both great and now I'm screwing around in Nelke for something different before I start L&S and then move onto Ryza and Sophie 2.
