The M109A7 is the latest howitzer in the BAE Systems M109 family of vehicles, the primary indirect fire support system for the ABCTs. It uses the existing main armament and cab structure of a Paladin M109A6, and replaces the vehicle’s chassis components with modem components common to the Bradley vehicle. The improved chassis structure provides greater survivability and commonality with the existing systems in the ABCT, reducing operational sustainability costs by replacing obsolete components.
The M109A7 is supported by the Army as a vital technology enhancement program to maintain the combat capability of its ABCTs. The M109A7 will solve long-term readiness and modernization needs of the M109 family of vehicles through a critical redesign and production plan that leverages the most advanced technology available today. This state-of-the-art “digital backbone” and power generation capability provides a more robust, survivable and responsive indirect fire support capability for ABCT Soldiers.
The M109A7 is considered to be the most cost-effective method to significantly improve sustainability and survivability, while reducing the logistics burden on the ABCT and supporting fires brigades. The program will be executed as a public/private partnership between the Army’s Project Manager-HBCT, Anniston Army Depot and BAE Systems that leverages the strengths of both public and private sectors to ensure the best value for U.S. Soldiers. The M109A7 production would be performed at Anniston Army Depot, Alabama and BAE Systems facilities in York, Penn.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Sterling Heights, Mich.; Endicott, N.Y.; and Elgin, Okla.

never have cared for the 155mm"s myself! i've always favored more 105mm's (you can have 4 maybe 5 105mm's for each 155mm material wise!!) while lighter payload the rate of fire more than makes up for that and more barrels means rate of fire for the battery can be sustained for a longer period if needs be! plus more guns means you can maintain fire on target while repositioning some guns to new firing points!

I was crewmen on the M109A1 back the late seventies in Germany….they have certainly come a long way in all that time..used to 9 crewmen..now it half that…lol the rounds were pretty heavy about 95 pds..we never used the power ram it took to long..the hand held rammer would be used with 4 guys pushing it up the tube..with a long pole with rammer on the end..those were the days!..was in shape then..now I get worn out carrying a gallon of milk up the stairs…lol

During my second tour in Iraq. I was tasked out to support the 101st ABN 1-32 CAV because they were running Bradley's. Yes Bradley's lol. They had 13 Pre-po Brads because they were getting hit hard by IEDs so they requested armor and got Pre-po Brads. And 5 Bradley mechanics from 4ID. Myself being one of those Bradley mechanics. Near the location we were sleeping was the Paladin gun line and infront of them was the mortar pits. The mortars never bothered me. But the Paladin's made the cheap plaster the Iraqi's used when they made those buildings fall on my head while I was trying to sleep at night. We had to walk close to the gun line to get to the MWR on the FOB. One night I am walking along in calf deep moon dust with nothing but the moon to see by. And suddenly those bastards did a fire mission lmao. Scared the bejesus out of me and I ended up flat on the ground covered in moon dust and my M4 was filthy. Didn't make it to the MWR. Just went back and showered, changed cloths and cleaned my M4. I had been mortared by the insurgents many times and rocketed too. So I was kinda desensitized to that sort of thing. But the Paladins still got me lol.

I get that they are just training but should they not be under some cover, behind trees, doing the shoot and scoot, something to avoid counter battery fire and drones?
@jongsookim636
@jongsookim636 3 месяца назад
Now a days artilleries does not hide on something. just shoot and scoot. mordern artillery warfare is not Maginot line. its not artillery attack and concret defence. just matter of survive. whenever they shoot, got counter attacked, and then they do not cover anything, can not survive. mordernized and modified artillery radar and cpmputers easily can point out shooters position. even though cover/hide or not.

Paladin is really starting to show its age.while some system upgrade have modernized the system to fire programable projectile and have modern batlefiele computera and comunication. But the system still lacks some major advances. Firstly the armour is very thin. Yes, its light and that is good for air transport, but very vonurabke to counter artilery fire. The deply and redeply time is also a bit to slow, and so is the fiering rate.

Wondering why the gun enhancement hasn‘t been done yet. BAE already trialed the 109 with the Rheinmetalls L55. It worked and it would be a hilarious inexpensive upgrade.

It would only increase range, the base system is outdated. It needs a better loading system and magazine etc etc. At that point buying a new system like k9a1 or pzh2000a1 is more efficient. Keep in mind that the basic system is from the 1960's

I find it very fascinating how diffrent the designs are between nations especially my own one Beeing Sweden and our focus on fast firingand extreme accuracy plus high tech with Bkan1c beeing the fist SPG with gps and built in computer guidance and our FH77 beeing first of the TTowed ones. USA has more or less gone 180 degrees with their artillery. maybe due to them not thinking of fighting on their own Soil against supperior enemies.

One thing I never understood is the use of special ammo carrier vehicles. Since they are as big and heavy as the SPG itself is and probably not much cheaper, why not just get a second SPG instead? You wouldn't even need a full second crew, just a 2-man transport crew that drives the empty of the two SPGs back and forth between the ammo stash and the firing spot, switching and handing it over to the main crew once it is fully stocked again. That way you would double the time between barrel swaps and there would be a fully functional spare SPG in case one is damaged or lost. And if you would do that with a more advanced SPG that has a autoloader or a semi-autoloader and can be fully operated with a 4-man crew, you could even have 2 fully operational ones with the same crew size as 1 hand loaded one and a support vehicle, which means even though in normal operation only one would be firing and the other would be reloading, you would have the option to have both firing in emergency burst operation, so to say. Another advantage of that would be that both SPGs, even when firing alternately, could chose separate hiding spots, which means that no reconnaissance drone or anyone else could follow the path of a support vehicle to the hiding spot of the SPG.
@Tuck-Shop
@Tuck-Shop 5 месяцев назад
Dedicated ammo vehicles can carry far more ammo. A single one can supply additional ammo for multiple SPG's for longer than your rotation of 1 idea. For large scale bombardments and sustained warfare, dedicated ammo carriers are superiour. This doesn't mean your idea is without merit. In a move and scoot scenario and counter battery fire I'd use your idea but with rotating an SPG instead of driving a a partially manned one and swap location to fall back to a resupply location. This prevents you from revealing locations in this day and age of drone warfare. All the enemy would have to do is follow the ammo carrier to all the SPG's allowing for them to be taken out. In a rotate 1 scenario they would only know the location of a single gun and any attempt to take it out by arty would open up their arty to be taken out by the rest by counter fire.
@fakshen1973
@fakshen1973 5 месяцев назад
The ammo carrier is far cheaper to produce than the carrier with the turret and artillery. Mobile artillery without autoloaders are cheaper to produce, less complicated to manufacture and service. It's faster to replace Private Shove-A-Shell with a muscle strain than an autoloader that requires pulling then entire unit to a rear area to have a bunch of support mechanics try to fix or replace your autoloader while dealing with all their other tickets to fix. The gun is also going to be heavy and expensive. So that's much more mass to transport and more weapons to maintain. Using ammo carriers give you more logistic capabilities. Your logistic team might want to stage ammunition at a firing position for sustained missions. Risking an ammo carrier out in the open to resupply vs risking an entire trained artillery crew is the least risky scenario of having the artillery unit have to return all the way to a supply depot and leave someone without fire support, when a few ammo carriers can keep ordnance flowing. The soldiers driving the ammo carriers don't need as much training as gun/carrier crew. Also, if I have half the gun crews, I can train them twice as much for the same training budget.
@Monkey-ud8bw
@Monkey-ud8bw 5 месяцев назад
Good question. I suppose it comes down to versatility, as situations change so can the type of munitions. One or two of these carriers could resupply a battery.

Well M109A7 is good, but still comparably outdated. It would require a full core system rebuild and redesign to bring it on par with PzH2000 and similar systems. and at that point, buying PzH2000 or K9A1 is just cheaper and more efficient

The M109A7--an exercise in absurdity! A rehash of the M109A6 with the same L39 cannon, and M2 Bradley engine and running gear. It only adds a semi-automatic loader, which apparently does not increase the rate of fire, according to some specifications I have seen. A national embarressment in comparison to the Pzh 2000 or K9 systems.
