It shows you that love is complicated. Here I feel he was giving her an opportunity to finally say she loved him. He loves Kimmy, he will dedicate himself to her, but he’s in love with Julianne. He needs to be loved the way he loves though. The smile on his face after they came out from under the bridge looked like acceptance. Singing to her was his goodbye. Just like Julianne dedicating the same song to them at the wedding was her goodbye to him.
I was the same as you, watched as a teenager and I enjoyed it but now I watch as an adult and this scene just hits so much harder. So many moments I've now let pass by.
@@EtoTheKay here maybe the most but also overall. He saw her in underwear and was telling her how good she looks and also when she was going to the bar to him and Kimy. Always going over the top with the compliments. The only thing he told Julian Kimy had over her was that she didn't mind PDA. The whole movie was a mess really.
@@cobrakaier238 In this scene he was trying to get her to admit she loved him. But she couldn't do it. Flirting throughout the movie? Maybe. They did have history. The movie wasn't a mess though and is one of the most successful rom-coms of all time.
@@EtoTheKay times have changed. It was a hit cause of Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett. I remember I liked it quite a lot back then but I was 11 or 12 so that explains a lot. And I don't think he was trying to make her admit she loves him, in the end he was shocked she loved him. Remember also the scene where he liked her finger to get the ring. What was that?

In the end, he may have been shocked, but his heart had moved on from her at that point. The scene where he swallowed her finger to take off the ring, yeah, that was pretty forward. But you gotta remember, he was broken up with Kimmy at that point. This movie was a hit because of Julia, yes, but the fact that it was actually a good movie was a factor too. Julia has made several bad movies too don't forget - Michael Collins, Mary Reilly, I Love Trouble. So an A-list actor does help, but it's not a guarantee. Rupert Everett? I didn't even know who Rupert Everett was prior to this film lol.
She came to Chicago with the goal of ending things between Michael and Kimmy. She accomplished that, yet still didn't capitalize with Michael. She had countless opportunities to tell him her true feelings, that she loved him and wanted to be with him. No bigger opportunity than right there on that boat ride - he basically gives her a golden opportunity to admit you love someone when you do. Again, she let's it slip. A soul crushing moment, where I was literally yelling at the screen "this is your golden chance, tell him you love him!!" She lets the moment pass. The magnitude of the moment literally has her in tears, yet, she still cant confess her feelings. I know her silence fits the storyline, but realistically, how many girls would have remained silent here?? She doesn't confess her feelings until the bottom of the 9th inning, the day of Mike's wedding, when she kisses him under the gazebo and Kim catches them. Of all the countless opportunities she had to pour her heart out...she waits till THEN? I know the ending was realistic, but I still really wanted them to end up together. 😫
@@nogalistanineties9237 He was the engaged one. She wasn't. The onus was on her. And he gave her a golden opportunity on the boat ride - "When you love someone, you SAY IT!" When she didn't respond, I believe this boat ride was when he gave up on her, and committed his heart to Kim's.
@@EtoTheKay I'm not disagreeing with you My beautiful friend I'm saying it's a two way street it takes two he was acting sad when Julianne and George were so called engaged (Pretending to be engaged) realistically Michael loved Kimmy as a person but he was in love with Jules so in real life if ends up with Kimmy he would have to live with the fact he's only with her because jules didn't want to be with him get over the person who you're in love with first before you try to get with someone cause Michael feelings were obvious when Jules and George showed up together
The metaphor of coming out from under the bridge to represent the missed opportunity... ETA: I always saw it as Jules missing her moment to tell Michael she loved him, but I see it now as Jules somewhat realizing that Michael had his opportunity to say it then and he didn't because he didn't feel that way any her anymore.
@kristinamarshall7366 I think she definitely wanted him, she just didn't realize she wanted him until she realized she could lose him. She fell victim to the saying "you don't know what you have till it's gone". She always felt like he would always be there, that she couldn't lose him...until another woman came into his life. I know the ending was the most realistic. But I really wanted them to end up together!!
Love can take half a lifetime to come. Some finf it in youth otherd do not find it until adulthood. But when it comes you remember when it was gone and those years withput it. When love comes your grateful it found you . And do not let go of it because as it comes it leaves like a season of spring.
The message of this movie seems to be one of right person at the wrong time, but it also can and should be seen as a great example of a woman placing a man into the friend zone and only wanting him when she can no longer have him. If at anytime prior to Michael meeting Kimmy, Jules had busted a move, Kimmy would have had no shot. But that is not what Jules does. She puts Michael into this zone where he is there for her, but she does not want him romantically and sexually. When he is going to marry Kimmy, suddenly she wants him... Now, Michael would probably be somewhat to blame too, as he probably simped for Jules. But either of them could have changed things at anytime, and then Michael does, but it is too late. And any man in Michael's position for the movie should marry Kimmy. Be that loyal man who keeps his word, because Jules is chasing only feelings, and feelings are fleeting.

This is Julian's moment but he let it pass by..if only she soeaks out umder that bridge..and tell him how much she loves him, the ending would be different... I still can't move on that they didn't end up together 😞 He just gave her the last chance but she let it slip away..😢

Ugh, lame. She was stringing him along for her own pleasure. Maybe him too? It's twisted regardless . He found someone that was WAY better than her. Why was Kimmie better? Because she didn't play around with his emotions.
