You can always angle the compound the other wayand use the other side of the toolpost to get those extra inches, though it may mean working in two parts and having to pick up a surface already machined. Colchester lathes also have twin clutches and a centre brake position. It would be really hard having to go back to a machine that doesn't quickly stop and reverse after using one that does, it makes threading any weird pitch so easy.

Don, isn't the standard for length of a lathe, what can be turned between 2 dead centres? I think that's what they taught us in school 40 years ago...
