You can always angle the compound the other wayand use the other side of the toolpost to get those extra inches, though it may mean working in two parts and having to pick up a surface already machined. It would be really hard having to go back to a machine that doesn't quickly stop and reverse after using one that does, it makes threading any weird pitch so easy.
