This week we're ranking the 13 studio album of made-for-tv band, The Monkees.
****
The Monkees were an American rock and pop band, formed in Los Angeles in 1966, whose lineup consisted of the American actor/musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork alongside English actor/singer Davy Jones. The group was conceived in 1965 by television producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the situation comedy series of the same name. Music credited to the band was released on LP, as well as being included in the show, which aired from 1966 to 1968.
While the sitcom was a mostly straightforward affair, the music production generated tension and controversy almost from the beginning. Music supervisor Don Kirshner was dissatisfied with the quartet's musical abilities, and he limited their involvement during the recording process, relying instead on professional songwriters and studio musicians. This arrangement yielded multiple hit albums and singles, but it did not sit well with the band members, who were facing a public backlash for not playing on the recordings. After a brief power struggle, the band members gained full control over the recording process. For two albums, the Monkees mostly performed as a group, but within a year, each member was pursuing his own interests under the Monkees name. By the end of 1968, they were once again a group in name only, the show had been canceled, and their motion picture, Head, had flopped. Tork left the band soon after, followed by Nesmith a year later, and the Monkees officially broke up in 1970.
A revival of interest in the television show came in 1986, leading to a series of official reunion tours, a television special, and four new full-length records, all of which spanned the next 35 years, though these efforts rarely comprised all four members performing together. With Jones' death in 2012 and Tork's in 2019, Dolenz and Nesmith were left to embark on a farewell tour in 2021, finishing shortly before Nesmith's death at the end of the year.
Spurred by the success of the show, the Monkees were one of the most successful bands of the 1960s. The band sold more than 75 million records worldwide making them one of the biggest-selling groups of all time with international hits, including "Last Train to Clarksville", "I'm a Believer", "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", and "Daydream Believer", four chart-topping albums and three chart-topping songs ("Last Train to Clarksville", "I'm a Believer", and "Daydream Believer"). Newspapers and magazines falsely reported that the Monkees outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined in 1967, a claim that originated from Nesmith in a 1977 interview.

Hehe, runthroughs like these add to the fun. That’s why I hold up Three Dog Night as one of my fav episodes. To me the most hilarious thing is that each of them has to listen through the whole discography before forming an opinion. Cruel, it’s true, but hilarious nonetheless.

I always think, thought of, the Monkees more broadly as all-around entertainers. They were actors who could sing, play music and they were very funny. There was a real chemistry when they all got together, whether it was performing in Concert or on their TV show, movies, commercials, etc. They really occupy their own space in the Entertainment World and on that basis, they are special. As Micky once said, they were this blend of two actors with musical sensibilities and two musicians with acting sensibilities. A very unusual mix.

0:45 is all you need to know about Kramzer's position: indoctrination. I understand, to a point. There was never any question about which bands my dad loved or hated when I was a kid. But then I grew up and learned to think for myself. I have a 4-year old daughter that will see a food on her plate that she's never tried before, but she will swear she hates it. After much convincing, she will bring it to her mouth, but before it ever goes in, she will give me the "I told you it was yucky!" Eventually she'll take a bite. But even though she's chewing, you know she's not really focused on tasting the food. She's already decided it's bad. That's Kramzer. With music.

Bob Dylan said that in early 1964 soon after they came to America, he was listening to the radio on a long car trip and he noticed that 8 hit songs were by The Beatles. And he said that their chords were just outrageous, just outrageous and that their harmonies made it all valid. He also said that he knew that they were not going to be a passing fad and they were doing things musically that nobody else was doing and that he knew they were taking music in the direction it needed to go. Roger McGuin of The Byrds said that he bought a 12 string guitar after seeing George Harrison playing his on The Beatles great first film A Hard Days Night and he formed The Byrds soon afterwards. Roger also said that The Beatles were writing folk rock chords in their rock and roll songs which he said was unusual and original and he said that they invented folk rock without even realizing it.

Love the channel, guys! Keep up the good work! Still waiting for a Bee Gees ranking episode! Kramzer's condemnation of the songwriting in their early albums is really a criticism of the top U.S. songwriters of the period. Can't really blame the band for that. But that said, I feel the early albums are head and shoulders better than their later stuff (i.e. anything after "Head"). The post-Monkees period reveal that Mike was the most talented of the bunch. My favorite was "Headquarters" but I don't find myself listening to their individual albums, but rather I listen to compilations because their good stuff is really good, but their bad stuff is really bad.

Amazingly, at their height, the Monkees sold more records than the Stones and Beatles COMBINED. The likes of Frank Zappa appeared on their show and in the movie "Head" as well as Jack Nickelson. Plus they had Jimmy Hendryx as their opening act..not too shabby for a pre-fab band.

When I was a kid, I asked my friend for a Beatles album for my birthday. She bought me a Monkees greatest hits album. She said, "is that the album you wanted?" I said, "...yes". So that was my intro to The Monkees... I liked Nesmith's Elephant Parts. Some very fine songwriters recently wrote some good songs for them, Andy Partridge being one of them. Overall, only a handful of songs by them I like. But to sit and listen to a whole album by them... uh, no. I know there are a lot of bands that really like them and swear by them.

This is the 3rd time you guys have done a video where after watching I went away and listened to the whole discography. The others were Bowie and Dylan. So congrats, for making people listen to music. As for the Monkees, I had only ever heard "More of the monkees" and some singles before. More of the monkees was the first record I ever heard, at age 3 or 4, it was very big for me. So after about a week, here is my ranking: 1. Headquarters 2. More of the Monkees 3. The Birds the bees and the monkees 4. Picese, Aquarius, etc 5. Good times 6. Justus 7. The Monkees 8. Head 9. Pool it 10. Instant Replay 11. Present. 12. Changes - I didn't listen to the Christmas Album. To Be honest I am totally amazed that some of you could rank the 1969 and 1970 albums so high. It sounds like they heard the Bee Gees and decided to copy them, with too much reverb and strings. To me, they are very uninteresting. I also agree with Kramzer that around this time they weren't showing much progress musically. I like their 67-68 albums with the Psycadelic influence; and of course More of the Monkees is very high, with great songs. I also think "good times" and "Justus" are better than you make out, especially good times. I am not sure why Jason is so down on them, the only thing I would say is the more heavy guitar sound is not really suited to the Monkees. But there are some really good songs on good times.

The first thing I ever got obsessed about as a pre-schooler we're the Monkees' TV reruns on Nickelodeon and the first Monkees' album the first piece of vinyl I'd get up and ask to be put in the record player. Point: these songs meant a lot to me. Counterpoint: Kramz not totally wrong. The fact that he can't appreciate the melodies and energy of the songs and arrangements themselves seems like he's forcing himself to stick with his frustrated posture. BUT.... He's right that these albums even at their best are incoherent. There's also a layer of artifice to everything they do. Their most emotional or rocking songs feel like their attempt to appear emotional or rocking. Davy Jones' voice is the clearest example of not cutting through to emotional investment. Episode: 4/5 (They're getting into some great details regardless of their take).

There are many online articles rightly calling The Monkees the first manufactured or original manufactured boy band and Mickey Dolenz was interviewed in 2 of them. And Peter Tork was interviewed in 2 interviews calling them this one from a British site and another was from the U.S. in 2016. And The Monkees were literally formed by their TV auditions for the Monkees TV show and they didn't even know each other before that. And even though Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were professional musicians their TV producer didn't want them to play instruments on their first several albums. And even though Mike Nesmith wrote some good songs their big hit songs were written by professional song writers like Carole King and Neil Diamond etc. 9:20

Love the 'Kees! Dolenz is one of my favorite Male pop vocalists of his time ... especially since Lennon and McCartney had moved on from the genre by this point. 1967 was an extremely hectic year for them. They filmed about 30 episodes and put out 3 albums. Tork also worked tirelessly teaching Jones how to play piano and Dolenz how to play drums. between their filming and recording sessions, they went on 2 tours. Did you know that Nilsson had written Cuddly Toy about a girl being passed around by a biker gang? I doubt he shared that info with Don Kirshner. What good albums were there where the main artists didn't play on? The Wrecking Crew played on most of the Beach Boys albums AND the Mamas and the Papas records as well. They even played on the earlier Byrds albums where McGuinn was the only one allowed to record more than just vocals. Now I'm sure you didn't mean albums by artists who only sang, right? Cos you can't swing a dead cat around without hitting at least a couple of dozen great albums by one of those. On their off time Dolenz and Tork particularly hung out with they're friends in Laurel Canyon... Joni Mitchell, CSN, et al. Admittedly, I'm not that familiar with much of the post Head stuff... but, now you've all inspired me to check them out. Thx

About The Beach Boys, that's not true at all. There is not a single album that The Beach Boys did not play on. The Wrecking Crew definitely played on a lot of Pet Sounds (1966) and SMiLE (1967), Friends (1968), and half of Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) (1965). On the other hand, several albums like for example Surfin’ Safari (1962), Surfin’ USA (1963), Surfer Girl (1963), Little Deuce Coupe (1963), Shut Down Vol. 2 (1964), All Summer Long (1964), Today! (1965), Party! (1965), Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), 20/20 (1969), Sunflower (1970), Surf's Up (1971), Carl & the Passions: So Tough (1972) and Holland (1973), they played on all or most of the songs.

University of Pennsylvania ( one of the top ivy league Universities in America) graduate musicologist Alan W Pollock did an 11 year study of their almost 200 songs that they wrote and he thoroughly demonstrates and explains that even many of their early songs have complex inventive unusual chords and arrangements in them even in quite a few of the songs they wrote in 1962 like Paul's P.S. I Love You, John 's song that I always loved Ask Me Why and Paul's great All My Loving etc. And his study called Notes On Series is online and there is an interview with him included with his online study where he says that their early catalog has a lot of what he calls chord anamolies is underrated in this respect.

This episode led me to re-listen to the three 1967 albums in order. More of the Monkees has many great musical moments, thanks to the studio musicians. Compelling rhythm sections drive songs like She, Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow), and Mary, Mary. The organ is used very well on different songs. I love the chiming sound on Sometime in the Morning. And both sides end with all-time great singles: Steppin' Stone and I'm a Believer. The studio musicians deserve more credit than they have received. Many great albums have been collaborations between studio musicians, songwriters, arrangers, producers, and the lead singers. Headquarters has a thinner, less musically complex feeling than More of the Monkees, because they guys in the band were learning to play on their own. It's still a very good album, thanks in great part to the songs that bookend Side Two (For Pete's Sake and Randy Scouse Git). By the end of the album, there's an overall feeling of well-crafted simplicity, similar to albums like Beatles For Sale. Pisces, Aquarius... is a nice step forward from Headquarters, with a musical depth that rivals More of the Monkees. The guys had obviously been listening to the recently released Sgt. Pepper album. The controlled experimentation of the last three songs elevates the album to a special place. Interestingly, I've never listened to much Monkees music after the first four albums. Those albums have such a rich variety of music that they always left me satisfied, with Valleri and Daydream Believer the best of the later songs that I've heard. The Monkees are also, in a way, a time capsule. And that 1967 music is both a reflection and an enhancement of the music of those times. That adds magic to those first four albums.

All the same I was interested in the comments you all bring- especially as you are all from a different generation. Of all the comments the one that sticks is Krams point about how he would have liked to hear what the velvet underground would have done with this material. They would have improved it in the same way that Lou Reeds singing would have improved Pet sounds. Basically destroying it. Even though I don't quite hate the Monkees on the same level as Kram, I do see some of his complaints. It really does feel like 3 different bands on every album (4 when they throw Peter a bone). Also, he does pretty much nail my thoughts on Davy Jones. I do think Mike Nesmith was a talented dude, and I think he keeps most of the albums in average-to-good territory. Anyway, here's my list: 1. Good Times - 4 2. The Monkees Present - 4 3. Head - 3.5 4. More of the Monkees - 3.5 5. The Monkees - 3.5 6. The Birds. The Bees, & The Monkees - 3.5 7. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones - 3 8. One of the more entertaining videos you guys have ever produced. Kramzer is in a completely different universe compared to Joe and especially Jason. I had a feeling he would like them the least but I didn't expect him to hate them more than Billy Joel it seems. Watching the video, it seems like 80% of his hate for the band is because of Davy Jones. I agree that Davy isn't the best singer but for some songs he works. Some songs he absolutely does not though. I love Mickey Dolenz's voice. He's a great rock singer. Mike Nesmith is a good country rock singer/songwriter, and Peter Tork is a pretty underrated guitar player. I like the Monkees a lot. Probably more on Joe's side in this one. My favourite would probably be More of the Monkees or Headquarters.

You have to remember that these four guys were hired as ACTORS. And that only two of them were real musicians (Tork, Nesmith.) Dolenz had to learn drums. Davy had some Broadway-style singing experience. It's a minor miracle that their records were as good as they were. Almost every hit single from 1967 was excellent. And the only album those four played all of the instruments was the fairly good HEADQUARTERS. Studio guys on everything else.

Also John Lennon and Paul McCartney were such amazingly talented song writers that they were already writing hit songs for other music acts in 1963 such as Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, Peter and Gordon, singer Cilla Black and The Rolling Stones just as their own song writing success was getting off the ground. Mick Jagger asked John and Paul if they had any songs for The Rolling Stones because they were only recording cover songs on their first albums. Do Paul and John wrote the rock and roll song I Wanna Be Your Man right in front of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger and this inspired them to start writing their own songs and both bands became good friends and hung out together from then on. John Lennon played Keith Richards guitar and Paul McCartney played Bill Wyman's bass as they wrote it and it became one of The Rolling Stones first hit songs. Also in the December 1963 issue of The London Times music critic William Mann also pointed out what Alan Pollock did and he called John Lennon and Paul McCartney the two most outstanding British song composers of 1963. Also in the same December 1963 London Times issue classical music critic Richard Buckle called John Lennon and Paul McCartney the two greatest song composers since Beethoven after they composed music for a ballet called Mods and Rockers. And by the time they wrote, recorded and played live on their first album Please Please Me amazing only in just one day in February of 1963, they already had 1000's of hours of live playing experience from playing live 8 hours a night and they had to take speed pills to stay awake to do it in the sleazy strip clubs in Hamburg Germany from 1960-1962. Then they also played live in the Liverpool Cavern Club for several years and then they played live all around the world from 1963-1966.

Imma be real the Monkees probs have more relevance in modern music today as their approach lended more to a pop tradition than a rock tradition (like the Beatles did for the latter, although you could argue a case for pop rock/power pop with them). I think we've learnt more in recent years to appreciate a "bop" for a "bop" and the Monkees personified that. I also feel like theyre a more sensitive, delicate and feminine band than their contemporaries which is a voice that tends to get undervalued (I think they always have alot of conviction when they sing too personally). I always thought they fused elements of country, pop, rock, satire and vaudeville in a unique way, American but with a bit of a British influence and tying that together is the unique attributes of all the members too. It makes sense they sounded like the Beatles a little bit because they revolutionized the industry so much, everyone sounded like them to an extent thats where they started but i dont think thats who they were or where it ended (I think they were definitely ahead of the Byrds with their embrace of country rock, I saw someone say that Sweet Young thing is kind of Velvet Underground in its sound and I can hear it). To me theres nothing wrong with having others write songs for you and play on your records, its how the performer brings their energy to it and makes it their own (alot of music now is done like this and its not lesser just different) The Monkees did this well in a time where that was starting to seem passe while showing they could write and play if they wanted to. If you want to get to them more id recommend reading their backstory, watching Head which started the New Hollywood movement and is very unique and zany in its own right. If their stuff doesnt appeal to you at first give it another try you never they do tend to grow on you. With saying all this i appreciate the perspective even if I disagree and just thought i share my personal thoughts and maybe give you more of an insight into why people love them so much

And George Martin said in his biography All You Need Is Ears that there's no doubt that Lennon and McCartney were good musicians, they had good musical brains which is where music originates it has nothing to do with your fingers. Then he said that as it turned out they could all play their instruments very well and he said Paul is an excellent music all-rounder, a brilliant guitarist, probably the best bass guitar player ever, a first rate drummer and a competent piano player. I really think that most people would say that Paul's always been a better piano player than a drummer but he was always a great multi instrumentalist since the early middle Beatles days. George Martin also said in his biography that in The early Beatles days he tried to learn to play the guitar in order to have a better musical communication with them but he couldn't learn to play it so he gave it up. But he also said that both John and Paul learned to play the piano far more quickly than he was able to master their instrument. George also always said what is very obvious to most people, that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were incredibly talented people and that they both were extraordinarily talented song writers and great singers and that most of the creative musical ideas came from them. He also said that he had never known or worked with anyone as brilliant as The Beatles and he produced quite a few music acts after them but he never had the same success as he did when he worked for them. Neither did Brian Epstein.

Comics book fans say "the golden age was whenever you were 13." I was actually fourteen the year The Monkees records outsold the Beatles and the Stones combined on the US charts - in the year Sgt. Pepper came out!. Pisces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones, Ltd. and Head are tied for my favorite of their albums. I will agree that Davy Jones barely registers as my fourth favorite Monkees singer. I agree, Michael was the best and the band could have used more contributions from Micky and Peter. Glad to hear acknowledgment that some of their song lyrics and subject matter was darker and disguised by the poppy delivery. Cuddly Toy, the rape song, was actually the first song Harry Nilsson ever sold when he decided to be a songwriter. And Boyce and Hart's Last Train To Clarksville was a massive hit, scoring on the charts before the show debuted, without most people realizing it was an anti-war song. And Salesman is (obviously) a dope dealer song. On the topic of bands that had hits without playing all their own instruments... like all the Motown vocal groups, like duos such as Sonny & Cher or Simon & Garfunkel... Oh, you mean band-bands? Well, my understanding is before they turned into a country rock group, those first couple of "psychedelic" Byrds albums had the group members singing and the Wrecking Crew playing the instruments - pretty much Monkees albums with different singers and more Dylan covers. Look, kids, nothing personal, I watched because I'm a Monkees fan and I probably won't be watching your show again. like Kramzer, I was taught by my dad to hate the Monkees. unlike Kramzer, I rebelled and found a kitschy charm in them. although I never warmed to the show, Head is both a) an incoherent mess AND b) one of my favorite films of all time. for a band that admitted they were "A manufactured image/with no philosophy" there was a playful anarchy hiding behind all the pop commerciality. I love tracks like "Randy Scouse Git" "Goin' Down" "Zilch" "Naked Persimmon" and "Daily Nightly" for their creativity. this may just be me, but I could see a streak of apathy that resembled the US punk scene of the early 1980s-particularly the California bands. "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" was an important song to the punks, covered by the Sex Pistols and Minor Threat. I own their 1st 3 records and a Japanese pressing of Head. I agree with Jason that they are not so much an album- as they are a singles band. they can be infuriatingly inconsistent and a bit too goofy at times, but I like them in spite of or perhaps even because of their flaws.

Ryan: You think "Changes" is their best album?? First off, the only reason it existed in the first place was because their Saturday-morning reruns were getting #1 ratings and they were still dubbing in songs, including a new music video for the album highlight, "Oh My My"...You don't get it: this album basically had no heart ...You think it doesn't have a Monkees' sound to it? Well, at this point it was kinda 'rhythm and bubblegum,' and in some ways was more in line with The Archies...They themselves did not like the album, calling it a 'snowjob', and If you think it is not a sixties' pop-sound, you're incorrect, since music itself had not actually changed yet, even though it was technically 1970..."99 Pounds" (1967), "Midnight Train" (1969) and "I Never Thought it Peculiar" (1966) may not be their best, but, at least have more life to them than most of the other songs...BTW: Sitting there shaking your head most of the time is not cool, since you're obviously trying to take away from what the other guys are saying...
