Welcome to the official RU-vid channel of The Monkees, home of 60s chart-topping hits “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer,” as well as multi-platinum, #1 albums ‘The Monkees,’ ‘More of the Monkees,’ ‘Headquarters’ and ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.’
Monkee-mania began in Los Angeles in 1965 when Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones were cast in the eponymous television series about a struggling rock band inspired by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. The quartet brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their resulting music. By the time the series aired its final episode on March 25, 1968, The Monkees had sold 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles. Few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.

The interview at the end should leave no doubt that they were not dumb kids but actually highly intelligent and well spoken men.
@glamgal7106
@glamgal7106 3 года назад
I agree that the interview gave the impression that the Monkees were more intelligent than they were given credit for. Yet if history serves me correctly, they were limited regarding what they were allowed to discuss. Recently, I learned that "Last Train to Clarksville" was an anti-Vietnam war protest song. Bobby Hart confirmed this. In writing the song, he and Tommy Boyce had to be subtle in writing it. Only because Bobby mentioned it, I listened for hints--as he mentioned, they were subtle.

@@glamgal7106 I am recently discovering this group and all their songs and shows (thanks youtube!!!!) and I see how hard was to live in the ´60s for a young person. They are the generation of the change and they have all my respect due to that. I don´t know what the problem was with them in those days, that they were fake I read. I don´t know why they say that. David can sing very well, I heard Daydrieam believer and it is a great song.

It's easier and saves more space in any news columns to use shorter words in place of more appropriate words instead. Plus, "riot" sounds more sensationalist, even though it isn't as such. The media lives for sensationalism, unfortunately.
@rachelharvey9346
@rachelharvey9346 2 года назад
@@gokaury the point here is that they are trying to make the protestors sound more violent by using the word "riot". This technique is still used by right wing news media to turn public sentiment against the protestors. It is still happening today. Micky and the guys were aware of it then and young people today will tell you the same.

The sad thing about the end of traditional television is zoomers weren’t raised on re-runs like 80s kids were. But at least a lot is available online if you can find it. Most paid streaming platforms don’t even seem to feature these old shows. It’s like a purposeful disconnect from the continuity with the past. They don’t want people to know America was mostly white and sexual degeneracy isn’t normal.

Although I had been watching repeats (reruns) of 'The Monkees' since a very young age (my father, my mother, AND my grandmother had all previously loved them when they first aired; I first saw them in the early '80s), this episode has a very special place in my heart. Here in the U.K., when 24-hour-round the clock TV broadcasting first appeared about 1988-ish, episodes of 'The Monkees' were often used as fillers in the early hours, along with other old shows such as 'The Fugitive' and 'Batman'. My father would set the VCR to record 'The Fugitive', and if I was lucky he'd leave it to record 'The Monkees'/'Batman' afterwards. Although the episodes soon got taped over with other things, before this particular episode was recorded over, for some reason I recorded the soundtrack onto cassette tape, and listened to it many, MANY times over for several years - and know just about every word! It was recorded on a cheap cassette tape and eventually it screwed up, I was really upset. Some years later I managed to grab an off-air recording of this episode... and now all these years later am watching on-line in HD. It's not the best (nor worst) episode of the series, but it'll always be one that stands out to me, just for how many times it kept me company as I listened to it on my tape recorder as a boy! :)

As long as people have eyes and watch TV, the Monkees will live on. Making jokes and singing. In a way, they have achieved a form of immortality. Davey is forever young here as they all are. And Nesmith is still alive just like Peter is. So what else can you ask for? At least they will be remembered and as forever young and funny! I used to enjoy watching this Show on Saturdays along with Cartoons. Then later I’d watch American Bandstand and Soul Train. Those were great Saturdays for Television! 👏🏻🎸😎

Mike summed it up for me in the interview when he stated "I would like to see all the kids in the country wearing their hair how they would like to wear it." For years I fought my family on having my hair long not only because I wanted to but because its a respect for the other part of my ancestry. It also has a bit of biblical reference but mostly because I wanted it to be the way I wanted it. I grew up in a toxic, controlling environment, I wasnt allowed to have a voice or identity. I fought my own family for mine. Now that I have a son, he goes through similar things but I keep him away from that as much as possible and ye knows he has my support. I plan on watching these with him when we can but I will never forget Mike's down to Earth honesty and will never forget him saying this. This and many other reasons are why he was my favorite Monkee. Thanks for sharing and thank you Monkees!

in this episode, Nesmith songs are all featured. Sweet Young Thing was co-written by Nesmith and the famous Carole King/Gerry Goffin team. The late Peter Tork (as of a few days ago before this posting) I found quite funny in this episode. the pace and insanity of the Monkees Tv show still stands as watchable today and without all the garbage of so called highbrow sex humor, fart jokes, and other BS that kids have to grow up with today..

Hate to burst your bubble but the Monkees episodes are full of sex, drug and antiwar content. It's subtle, but intentional. Even their first song 'Last Train To Clarksville' is about going to Vietnam. ...'And I don't know if I'm ever coming home'...one last fuck before going to war.
