"We Love the Monkees" documentary. Originally aired on ITV. DISCLAIMER: This clip is the property of its owner. I own nothing here and make no claims to this video whatsoever.
The Monkees belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They outsold and outdid most of the acts already in the Hall. Who cares if they were a TV band. They were a band who did it all and more. Come on Hall, get it right.
They were only a TV band for the two years the show was on the air. After that they had much more control over their music, and played instruments on the albums. They DEFINITELY belong in the R&R HoF. There’s only two of them left. I want Micky and Mike to stand up there and accept for Davy and Peter too.
Davey Jones was a cousin once removed and as David (Davey )loved Horses so much 'Kids arpound the area came up with the nickname 'The Manchester Cowboy'
i watched the monkees from the beginning to the end. i want them to know that in 1967 my dad passed away and on the day of his funeral the monkees show was on well i was really takeing it hard and decided to watch the show, well for one half hour the monkees made me forget about things and actually made me smile and i will never forget that so thankyou guys for being there and helping me get through that day for a while...i love you all even now and miss davy so much. i was only 15 years old then.. when i was 16 i finally got to see their concert and i yelled at mickey..i love you mickey and he waved at me. that was a very special thing to me,,,,,love you guys always.....dora long
I'm 65 now, going on 100... But I'm still listening to their music on my mp3, quite frequently. Psychedelic, rock, blues, love songs... The Monkees will always have their place in people's hearts, whether they are induced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or a star at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, or not. I used to want to be one of those guys, hey-hey we're The Monkees!!
When I die I will come back a HAUNT the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame if The Monkees are still not in there, and I will haunt them forever! I will also bring FRIENDS with me! ;-)
Here because of the death of Mike Nesmith who died today 10/12/2021 I was only watching the both of them 3 weeks back with the Monkees final show. I'm glad I got to see them in my home city of Liverpool England back in May 2011. Rip Mike. Give Davy and Peter all our love ❤ Anyone on Twitter give Micky some love at this time. He's lost another brother today.
With the recent death of Mike Nesmith, it hits home with some of us "Boomers." They were were two years before my birth time of 1950. I'm seeing the exodus of my generation of the big brothers who made music history. We were well aware that it was a TV show, and none of us cared they supposedly couldn't play an instrument. The was a breakout from our father's WWII TV shows with Lawrence Welk playing WWII hits, or the country music heroes, that believe me, I DID notice and watched Johnny Cash and the Carter Family make legendary music in real time. Yeah, it was bubble gum music, we KNEW that, but we watched anyway. I was learning to play electric guitar, and that show had guitars and amps neither me nor my family could afford. Mike Nesmith was a real musician, and even then I could tell that because he didn't just "mime" the guitar parts, he made a point of playing the real chords on film, a secret code to us players, that he was giving us a message that. he wasn't a bought and sold commodity. I watched that show, but among us "heads," we would not admit that. How many people in our time even know what a "HEAD" WAS." A "head" was someone who smoked pot or had done LSD. What Hendrix meant by "are you experienced?" Like my WWII military Dad, we are now seeing the heroes of our generation, leaving the planet and we are next. The Monkees were commercialized versions of what we represented, which were the hate for war, the love of Peace and unity. Now we live in this horrible time when the idea of America has been destroyed by those who want us to live under a hateful dictatorship cult, and to destroy Democracy and turn us all against eachother, giving them total power over our lives. Am so glade my Dad isn't here to see where we are headed.....
I was born in 54 and hits home is right! Seems to me from 2016 on, more and more of them are exiting this planet! Hard to believe 3 of the Monkees are no longer here! 😔 God bless Micky, keeper of the flame!
The critics can say what they want-WHO CARES!!?? The best thing that ever happened was when they picked up their own instruments, dumped Kirshner, and took matters in their own hands. Their later records were just as good as their first ones(in spite of sales figures) and Monkeemania II (80's&90's) was just as good as Monkeemania 1-just very different!!
From one of the now-50-ish year-old fans interviewed, who fell in love with Mike Nesmith and the Monkees: "He (her dad) said I'd grow out of it....and I will ....oneday!" That's me in a nutshell!!
Peter Tork stole little this little 8 year old girls heart back in 1966. I don't know what it was about him, I was to young to really know about love, I just knew he stole my little heart.
I was a lot older, and he hit me like a truck! All these years later, I'm still trying to figure it out. I think it was his looks, of course, but also his intelligence, his goofiness and his 1,000 watt smile. Did I forget his dimples? 🧡💛❤ Nothing has changed.
I was 10 when the Monkees first aired and Peter stole my heart too! That dimple smile of his always makes my heart melt! He was cute and talented! Always holds a place in my heart! 💖
Love this docu, love the Monkees, so sad to hear of Mike Nesmith's recent passing, he's now joined Davy and Pete 😢 Mickey Dolenz is still with us, thank goodness, and keeps the Monkees alive with his great shows; he is thoroughly heartbroken, losing his mates, and has a big Monkee heart that he shares with everyone. 💓🎵🎶🎸🎶🎵
the strange thing about The Monkees most important strength within the band..was Micky's and Davy's voice...they were "THE ACTORS"..the other 2 "The Musicians"...but aside from the great songs coming in to the fray..Micky was a great singer..period...can you even imagine anybody else singing those hits
Mike had a wonderful voice also and was great at Songwriting and Music! Micky and Davy could sing but together the guys sounded great as a Band! We gals fell in love with their music and lyrics!
I got to see them in 1986. My mom saw them when they first hit it big. Many great memories of watching their show when it was rebroadcasted on nickelodeon back in the 80s. I will always love the monkees.
Great video. But seeing Davy walk out that door.....And now we have lost Peter too. They were unique & I am glad I was around at that time to enjoy their music & antics.RIP Davy & Peter 💓.Miss you.
This was a fantastic documentary. Without the required negativity of the Behind the Music series. It is still so hard to imagine Davy being gone. May he rest in peace.
How great was this video? I turned 20 in 1966 and remember watching their show in the common room of my dormitory. Their music wa so much fun. Oh, if I could only relive those times again.
100's of songs from the 60's featured the same studio band (see the "Wrecking Crew") playing on the tracks, which were not the individuals on the album covers. Such was the case for The Association, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Marketts, etc. The Monkees "became" a band thanks to the show and the guys actually started playing their own instruments starting with the album "Headquarters".
Without a doubt the most thorough, respectful and loving tribute to The Monkees of all the docs I've seen- more interviews with the key personnel; more music, rare footage, & attention to storyline than any US video I've ever seen. And with a deeply moving fan storyline underscoring it all- I LOVE those ladies! Historically, British youth have sustained the careers & relevance of US rock icons like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys- for years after we abandoned them. Great job, guys!
of course they needed to do some of their own stuff. Needed to prove that they had it. I do think they should have been in the hall of fame. They were incredible from what they started out with.
No doubt they should be in the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, they impacted the music market big time with many hits, more hits than some who have previously been inducted.
There have been so many documentaries on the band that have been produced in the states. It is refreshing to see one made in the UK so viewers can understand and witness the fanbase there, considering one of the members was from Manchester. Excellent documentary.
I have always been a Beatles fan, however I liked and respected The Monkees, great songs, great personalities and great musicians who were initially deprived of showing their musical talent !
Thank you for posting this. I loved the tribute of these 4 wonderful men. God Bless my Davy. He will live on forever. Proud the boys made it in the Hall of Fame after so many years and wish it was done when Davy was still with us but I know he was looking down so proud and I know he came down quickly to be there with his brothers. I will be 61 next month and I was a 13 year old Monkee fan right from the time the show aired to the last aired. Still to this day they have been my idols and always will be and my granddaughter who is 7 watches the dvds with me of the shows and sings with me the songs of the Monkees on the karaoke machine with me. Thank you again for posting this.
I agree totally with you. The Monkees should be in the Hall of Fame of Rock and Roll. So what how they first started, big deal, look what they have become? They are great and wish I could turn back the hands of time when I was 13 in 1966 and now 59, I still love them and always will. They kept on going and growing and they fooled everyone. If they do induct them, they better make sure Davy is mentiond and I hope Davy haunts them for taking so long. These guys deserve it. They worked their butts!
I was a big fan. Still have all their LP's. Nesmith didn't tour with them when they started doing gigs again; I suppose it was probably because he didn't need the bread. After all, his mother invented the greatest office tool since the paper clip.......liquid paper! I heard that Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees once. Is this true?
Actually the reasons why Michael didn't initially tour with them weren't solely about his lack of need for money. In fact he was supposed to take part in the 1986 revival but his other work commitments didn't always permit him to take part.
@@cherylhulting1301 Right.I wish people would accept this & stop dissing Mike.Actually, got worrying vid up the other day saying Mike needed help,he was ill & seemingly under the influence & control of a female Gatekeeper. But heard nothing since.Does anybody know the truth of this?
It is 2021 Just after Mike Nesmith passed away. Peter followed Davy's passing. Micky is the last living member of the band. They mentioned in the video that the Monkees band was done but it was only missing one member Davy. But in future show his spirit was there. Even after Peter passed away they were doing shows. Mike & Micky has just finished some concerts it was only a few months after that Mike passed on. The Monkees live forever in the hearts of their fans. We are lucky to have their TV show and their music. That makes them live forever.
Last show was Nov 14, Mike passed Dec 10. 😔 Yes, they live 4ever in the hearts of us the fans, the music they made, and the TV show. God bless Micky, keeper of the flame.
I know, its insane that they're not in the hall. I mean even Elvis didn't write his own material. The bottom line is that the Monkees recorded a lot of timeless songs and sold a massive amount of records. That is more than many who are in the hall of fame.
This was such a great documentary, left me with a really good feeling and emphasized all the positives of the whole experience. This is the first documentary on the group that I feel I want to share with my young kids. They are gonna love it since they are also fans. Thanks for uploading, eternally grateful!.
They were (and are) talented people. As far a changing music, no that would fall to a number of mis-sixties groups....but the Monkees did have a profound effect on TELEVISION.
This is so awesome and amazing! I was 13 when they aired the first year of the Monkees! I'm glad to be in the first generation of fans. I loved the music and the weekly shows so much! I still listen to their songs and relive the happy feelings of this time in my life ❤️
As usual, their solo careers are glided over quickly as are the last years of the Monkees themselves. No mention of Peter leaving first then Mike and finally the last two calling it a day. It's like 1969 & 1970 never existed. Very common even in good Monkees documentaries.
As a 5 year old girl I would watch the Monkees every time they were on tv..I loved them then & at almost 60 I still love them..Davey my favorite...I begged my mother for a Monkees lunch box cried until she got me one.Thats a child's love for sure!!!
A great one passed to day. Always thought the Ben Frank..type had something to do with the Ben Franklin/Granny type glasses Roger McGuinn of The Byrds wore at the time. Found out it had something to do with a restaurant/bar/hangout space in Los Angeles.
Loved the girls and their stories, the Davy fan and her diary was just precious! I'd heard about Micky's (acid-fueled) school kid impromptu singalong but how wonderful she was there! So sad when Davy died. Gone too soon. Those Harry Nilsson songs were perfect for him. Gosh I'm older than he'll ever be now...RIP Davy & Peter too....🥀🥀
Part of the soundtrack of my childhood. There wasn't one kid anywhere that wasn't a RABID Monkees fan, me included. Those four young guys connected with so many millions of us, and they still do to this day, and they are forever in our hearts. Little did they know, that they would last forever, and how special they really are. The music, and those voices, singing those songs, really mean something to so many of us. I'm being corny, but I don't care, because I still listen, and they are still giving me joy, every time I do. I sure love them. Rest In Peace Davy💐 Rest In Peace Peter💐..and thank you both. I wish that you guys were still here...and with all the spirit that you left us, it seems as though you still are. I watch the show on DVDs here in 2021, and your music is still vital, and alive, all around the world, and is still making people happy. Thank you Mike.❤ Thank you Micky.❤ Be healthy, and be well, both of you.🙊🐵🙈🙉
@@scottsteel2395 A lovely heartfelt comment and sentiment about a great group/band. I was 69 last Friday and still love the Monkees, they were a great part of my mid teen years in particular. There is nothing corny about reminiscing as you have. It's good that we're still here to be able to look back and know how much they meant to us then and still do now, and so many others, over 50 years later.
@@bridgetdoman1386 Thank you for those very kind words Bridget. I turn 63 in Dec. Mike said in one of the documentaries about them.."I can't explain it". I think that I can. Sometimes, in this insane, chaotic, world, the stars are just in line, and something that is just meant to happen, does, and something MAGIC happens. Here , this group, that some people made fun of back then, are still making people smile, young, and old, and all in between. It should make them SO happy, that they DID achieve what they set out to achieve. They became forever a large part of a time that was very special, and they should know, that they DIDN'T turn out to be a joke. How many of us love them, and that what they did, and their music, left an everlasting IMPRINT, that has never faded, but has only grown stronger through time.✌❤🙉🙊🐵🙈
Davy looks wonderful at 42:19 yet he would suffer a heart attack & die in 2012, unbelievable. Just goes to show U never know but thanks for this great doco, it is worth watching more than once.
Well, the interview that you’re referring to was almost 15 years before his death. As relatively young as he was when he died in his 60s, Davy looked significantly older than he did when this interview was conducted in 1996, thirty years after the television show debuted. Nevertheless, he aged remarkably well compared to most of us, and any day of his death would have been a day to early. The more I’ve learned about the real flesh and blood man Davy Jones, the more deeply I’ve come to respect him.
Now that Davy's dead Mike is like well now I can get back together ! What a hard person to figure out . Why isn't Nesmith interviewed for this special ???? Schedule conflicts again ???? Jones is dead and even he's interviewed in this. The Monkees are crazy and sometimes waaaaay toooo craaaazy !
Omg I dont know where this docu came from but I LOVED IT!! Tysm for posting. It made my day as a great Christmas 🎄 present 🎁. These guys are the best were the best bc I think more than any group they brought joy laughs smiles to so many. They were witty funny their music made everyone happy 😊 . I feel blessed to have had ever heard their music and watched them on screen.
I first saw the Monkees when they came into syndication around 1970. I was in kindergarten and remember thinking "Who are these crazy men?" While my older sister couldn't get enough of Mickey, I loved Mike so much that I'd kiss the TV screen every time he was on. My mom would make me clean the lip prints off the screen. I'm now 50, happily married and still think Mike was a looker. But no lip prints on my monitor. It hurts my eyes. ;-)
They were ALL SUCH LOOKERS. lol 😆 I just kissed the screen of my smartphone yesterday when Peter came on hahaha old habits die hard. Miss those guys. Yet anytime I see Micky on TV doing something even if its an interview, he makes me smile his voice is like an unwritten melody just waiting 💙 to be written. What a talent Micky is. What an unbelievable freaking talent!! There will never be another talent like MD. Funny, handsome, that velvety voice... I could go on. Ty Micky for the happiness u brought to millions.
Two cool facts about the monkeys: 1) Davey Jones was on the Ed Sullivan Show the same day as the Beatles on February 9th ,1964. This was due to the fact he played Artful dodger in Oliver on broadway. 2) Mike Nesmith's mom invented liquid paper aka whiteout!
AND NOT JUST FOR YOU YANKS IN THE USA, WHAT ABOUT US IN THE LAND OF OZ, AUSTRALIA, WE CAN GET TO SEE IT TOO NOW!!!!!!!FOR ALL TO SEE!! LOVE THE MONKEES SOOO MUCH!!!!! FOR EVER!!!
The first time I've seen this and I have to say I am in awe I felt like for 46 minutes I was in a time travel back to the 60s and the 70s when I was a youngster and I was one of those underage teenagers like 9 10 years old between the monkeys and the Beatles and the British invasion and all the other groups in the United States I mean and then just making movies and making TV shows and you know it's what was for the time era and it was a great time for growing up in that nothing like old school hoping it will come back again but we have to make it happen life was great back then and I think every one of them monkeys every group every song everything movies had a great childhood growing up with all that and all that are gone now are you all rest in peace ☮️✝️🙏✌️🕊️❤️🎈🎈
What’s the big deal?? Many, many groups neither wrote their own songs, nor played the instruments on their recordings. For example, the Grass Roots. They neither wrote their hits nor played the instruments on those hits. And this was extremely typical back then. At least they provided the vocals. Fab & Rob didn’t even do that. 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
The Monkees are one of the best bands in the history of the world. I watched every episode, without fail. I wish I could have been there. It would have been great to have known them. I have a ton of their music in my mp3 and those old tunes still resonate. Just as good, just as poignant as the first time I heard them. The Monkees should have a star on the walk of fame and be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. ASAP
