"That Was Then, This Is Now" was not a "non-album" single. It's a single from the album "Then & Now: The Best Of The Monkees" which featured 3 new recordings by Micky Dolenz & Peter Tork, with the remainder of the album consisting songs from The Monkees 1960's catalog. "Valleri" makes it's debut on this album in it's full form for the first time with no fade-out at the end. In all The Monkees released 13 studio albums, matching that of The Beatles.

Excellent, there's always more to find, like the Beach Boys 1986 best of 'Made In USA featuring Rock and Roll To The Rescue! ...and of course The Beatles Oldies But Goldies being the only place to find Bad Boy in the UK for a long time.

It also was released way before Pool It! By the time Pool It! came out, the Monkees relationship with MTV soured, since (according to Mickey's book) the Monkees didn't perform as scheduled for a MTV Superbowl weekend event.

" That Was Then, This Is Now " was a great pop hit !!!!
@PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm
That was then is considered a non album track because it was on a greatest hits album. Those are not considered official albums because they are collections of previously released songsfor the most part instead of new material

The Monkees wasn’t based on Help! The idea came the success Rafelson & Schneider saw from A Hard Day’s Night. The original idea to have a TV series based on a musical group was hatched around 1963 about a folk group.

Indeed, that's something I got wrong, believe it or not I'm also a massive Beatles fan, but I screwed up my notes a bit there, quite new to this review, video making thing 😉

Yeah it's true, the original idea for the show was inspired by a Hard Days Night movie. But that wasn't released in the U.K. and USA until the Summer of 1964. So that film was used to describe the TV show pitch. HELP! the movie that was released the following Summer in 1965, just as they were putting the show together and getting it off the ground. So I'd say that film still would've inspired the show somewhat. Particularly later on and even on the Monkees film HEAD to a degree. The Marx Brothers was definitely a major influence on The Monkees show, in terms of it's zany nature and slapstick elements. John Lennon mentioned that similarity over his group and how much he enjoyed it.

Sometime in the late '90s, all four members reunited for a television special. I think it was in 1999, but I could be mistaken. The special was similar to the original show from the '60s.

I'd agree with the "wilderness" idea, except for 1986-87. The Monkees came back big then.

Great video. Lots of lesser known stuff. Did skip the period between 1971 and 1976, when Davy and Micky each recorded a number of tracks for MGM.

Slight correction, Gary. Davy never recorded for MGM. That was all Micky. Davy did release two live albums in the early ‘80’s on Japan Records and Warner/Pioneer, respectively. Peace & Happy New Year!🎊

@thegoodthebadtheuglyshow Год назад
Yup, the idea isn't terrible, but they should've just used a new name, not everything needs a sequel or remake, that's the problem now is no one has the guts to try and let a new idea stand up on it's own...

@camerondodge2070

I will admit, while the show was awful, the New Monkees had some chops. Their cover of Tom Cochran's "Boy Inside the Man" was decent, and Larry went on to do some great stuff with Tower City and Colorvine. If they had done more of their own stuff maybe they could've made it, but they always would've lived in the giant shadow the originals cast. Funny enough, this experiment would be reproduced many times over the years, with producer-formed pop bands starring in TV shows while putting out real albums. The most notable of these was Big Time Rush, whose TV show definitely followed the blueprint of the Monkees.
