Interesting that they were recording it just a mile away from where Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd were simultaneously laying down their first album, and the Beatles were just finishing off Sergeant Pepper the same month. Must have been something in the water.

The Moodies have recorded some of the most beautiful sounds in rock history

This album is really on a loop as it begins with a gong to indicate the beginning of a day and also ends with a gong to indicate 12 midnight ..then another day begins ... this album was way ahead of it's time and is one of the greatest 'concept' album ever made if not THE best.

I just played the whole album score with John Lodge and the Coachella Symphony Orchestra. I've been principal trumpet with the orchestra for about 7 years. This was a dream come true. I loved that album since junior high school. It was a magical evening at the Rancho Mirage amphitheatre. I've played with many of the old school greats but this especially got to me. We were the only symphony they played with on this U.S. tour.

I’ve heard critics saying that Peter Knight’s orchestral parts are “cheesy” but I think the album would be a whole lot less without them. Parts of it still bring me to tears even though I’ve been listening to it since the year it was released. Thank you for your additional insight.

What a masterpiece - not only launching prog as a genre, but introducing the "concept" album - far more than a simple collection of unrelated tunes. It's a bit sad that John Lodge isn't often mentioned when discussing really amazing bass players. He was always there (along with Graeme), holding everything else together without intruding on the overall flow.

I grew up in a time where you could hear this song on FM radio in it's entirety. Those days were special.

"Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" has always been one of my favorites. Well worth a listen!

This is the number one album on my list of all time albums. They took a chance and did something no one else would dare try at that time. An orchestra, a suite from dawn to night. So masterfully done and the rest is history.

Thanks for not interrupting the music from Nights In White Satin to Lament. That poem belongs with the song. When reviewers cut the Lament off from the song, it drives me crazy. I have to recite the poem myself just so that the recording ends correctly.

For me, the entire concept is amazing.

This is the greatest album ever made. It was thee first concept album, not just a bunch of hits put together. My older brother both this album, and I grew up listening to this album. This band was my "Beatles" moment. Their live concerts never strayed from their music, they played each song like the recordings. I caught them many times live and each time it took me back to my youth.

For those of us lucky enough to have heard this ‘back then’ when it’s very concept was beyond anything we had ever heard, this album will always have a special place in the CD collection. We will always hear it with those ears of wonder. It may be a different experience for millennials, their loss of innocence!

The ‘cold-hearted orb’ to me has always been the Moon. In moonlight, colors are washed out to shades of gray.

Man did that bring back the memories, and a few emotional tears as well! Makes me think of my brother John, who turned me on to all this stuff! He lays in a nursing home right now with dementia, and hearing that makes me want to go and play it for him right this minute! I know he’d go back, as I just did! Memories of a bygone era!
