Nights In White Satin Lyrics:
Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore
'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through
They can't understand
Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end
And I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Yes I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

That is an understatement. My son (was 18 yo at the time) took my mother (74 yo at the time) to see The Moody Blues in concert. It was mom's only Rock concert ever, but she loved this song in particular and would play the album/cassette Days of the Future Past over and over. I first had the album in 1973. My niece at two years old passed away in 1974 and my mom would think of her when she heard this song. That's what she said, but I now understand she would also cry over it for my father who had left her for another. Mom and dad are passed now and my son is 40. Hmmm, think it's time for my grandson to know The Moody Blues. Not sure he does - He's 19 yo.

Ich war auf einer Klassenreise und hörte dort den Song in voller Lautstärke das erste Mal (ich war wie beduselt in einer anderen Welt) und zuhause in den nächsten Plattenladen. See, growing up hearing it on the radio I always thought it was "Knights in White Satin," which changes the whole thing in my head. I've always listened to it and gotten the feeling of a melancholy, chivarlric romance. Doomed Arthurian warriors composing their final letters and poems, colorful banners hanging limp in the rain. Just beautiful dark fantasy vibes.

This was my parents' song, they would always play it and we'd listen to it as a family. 6 years ago now, when I was only 10 years old, my dad passed away from cancer and we had this played at his funeral as they were carrying his casket out of the church. Even afterwards, I would walk into our lounge room and my mum would be listening to it while crying and I would go and silently join here, it was just our way of remembering him and the love that we all shared, all in one simple yet powerful song. Edit: On another note, I find it kinda freaky that the music producer for this song shares the same name with my dad, Tony Clarke

I was born in 1957. I discovered the Moody Blues when I was about in my late teens to 20. This song tugs at my heartstrings & I just want to tear my heart out, it moves me. The swell of the music, a crescendo of height. No song has ever moved me to this extreme before or continues to today. Only Nights in White Satin can bring me to this emotion almost like an organism. There I said it. Thank you Moody Blues. The one & only.

So sorry, your post made me cry. I too lost my dad this year (2021). He had lived a full life to the age of 95, he was still healthy, never took medication, but decided he wanted to leave this earth it was changing too much, and he just willed his death. He was a WWII vet, I was an accident that came along late in his life. He was so stoic yet a very loving man. A man from another time with blazing red hair (that turned white after he was 85yrs). I still miss him, his strength, infectious laugh, and love for animals.

This was authored by Justin Hayward who had joined the Moody Blues the previous year, after Denny Laine [1] left the band. He got the idea for the “Nights in White Satin” after being given a set of white satin sheets. He explained : “I wrote OUR MOST FAMOUS SONG, ‘Nights in White Satin’, when I was 19. It was a series of random thoughts ans was quite autobiographical. It was a very emotional time as I was at the end of one big love affair and the start of another.” “Days of Future Passed” [2] (1967) was a concept album based around different times of day : dawn, morning, midday, afternoon, evening, twilight, night… “Nights” was given many a meaning by fans, which was okay by Hayward, who believed that “It’s the listeners who bring the magic and the interpretations to these songs.” With “Days of Future Passed”, the British rock ensemble distinguished themselves with original material in a new psychedelic/orchestral sound. “Nights” was originally released in 1967, at a time when six-minute pieces were a hard sell. However, in 1972, after The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” and Derek & the Dominos’ “Layla” paved the way for long dramatic tunes, “Night” was reissued and turned into a knockout as well as the Moody Blues’ anthem❕ Justin Hayward stated that the best cover version he heard was by soul singer Bettye LaVette. “I was sitting in bed with my laptop waking up to my emails, and I clicked on this link and I burst into tears […]. There have been hundreds, maybe thousands of covers […] but that was the first time I heard [the lyrics] for real.” The Moody Blues [3] enjoyed a long and illustrious career that took them well into the 2010s, and included thousands of performances, most of which featured the iconic classic❕ They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. ONE UNFORGETTABLE MASTERPIECE… STILL‼️ 💛💎💚 May you rest in peace, Raymond Thomas (1941 - 2018)… 🌹… & Graeme Charles Edge (1941 - 2021)… 🌹 1) In 1971, Denny Laine joined forces with Paul and Linda McCartney to form Wings. 2) The album was recorded with The London Festival Orchestra, which never actually existed. It was merely the name given to the musicians put together to create “Days of Future Past”. 3) The band started as the M&B Five, named after a brewery in Birmingham, England, Mitchell and Butler, which sponsored them. When the group outgrew pub dates, they renamed themselves the Moody Blues, “moody” because that was their image, and “blues” because that was their style of music. Both the moody and blues monikers became irrelevant once they released their “Days of Future Passed” album, but they were stuck with the appellation.

The first part of your statement is so very true. And those of us who were young at the time could not have been privy to a better youth full of the best music, tho' I love Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw, as well as Cole Porter, and anyone named Gershwin, as well. However, when this song came out the Viet Nam war was raging, the civil rights and women's rights campaigns were raging, there were the Democratic National Convention riots in Chicago, and assassinations during the period in the USA included Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Dr Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy. Yeah, people still had good manners in general, then, but it was not in any way peaceful.

Still listening in 2019 "Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore". My husband's dad passed in 2011. 😢 This was his favorite song.💗 He served in Vietnam. He said: "I always wanted to go back and see the pretty trees." 🌴🌱🌴🌱 But he could never afford to go back to see it.💰 😭 Before he passed, he gave his younger son, my husband, a tiny baby pine tree.🌴 I'll never forget that.😖 Peace ✌

The greatest piece of emotional moving music a rock band could ever create. First time I heard this was late evening in 1968 and it remains my favorite. At the time, I was disappointed with the lack of lyrics, but now I know this piece does not need much. Thanks Mr. Hayward.

It was re-released in 1972. I remember, because that was the summer I took off on my two year hitchhiking vision quest across America and Mexico, and that song got a lot of play on fm stations at night in the cars I got rides in. It’s one of my road songs. Priceless memories.
