Thank you for doing this. The live version is great, but the studio version is incredible. I was able to see them in Austin in the way back. Justin Hayward wrote this masterpiece when he was 19 years old. The album is about an entire day/life. It is well worth listening to in its entirety.

Saw them live at the Royal Festival Hall shortly before i left the UK in 1971 to be discharged from th AF. A friend and I on a lark drove from Norwich UK to London, no tickets. We got to the Festival Hall ticket window and as luck would have it the comcert was sold out but there were two cancelation. Center Seats, 2nd Row dead center. An Angel had our backs that night. This was one of multiple times I saw them while stationed in the UK. The Moody's that night were accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. One if the few bands i ever saw live that sounded like their studio album.

Ladies, my vote is for the live performance complete with a full orchestra. You'll see & hear in a moment. It is shocking to me that Justin wrote this masterpiece when he was 19 years old. This band was formed in 1964. You young lady where a sparkle in your parents eyes when these men got together and formed this Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band. In other words they have been doing this a long time!! Thank you Ladies!!!!!!

There is no “wrong version” of MB songs. It’s just full orchestration adding lush embellishment.

The haunting melody of the intro and the last 2 1/2 minutes of the song, the fairy tale twinkles leading up to the poem and the soaring crescendo at the end are not "musical embellishments", they make the song unique, complete and a masterpiece that has never been matched by anyone, at least not after the turn of the 20th century.

I understand Edward the spirit of what you said about. There's no wrong versions but I noticed most of the time the millennials are checking out live versions. And as wonderful, it was to see, these bands live a lot of us. Couldn't afford to see them live. So the only way we dumb was through the albums. And I must say I wish you seek dis. Appointed when I saw them live because to me. They never sounded as good live as they did in their studio versions. So personally I love closing my eyes and listening to the perfection of what they produced on viwell. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking with it. No disrespect!

Listening to an album in stereo (preferably with headphones) was a different experience from listening to a song on the radio and especially listening to a concept album of dawn to night. The addition of the poem, written by the drummer and recited by the keyboard player, and added at the end of the last song, was the cherry on top. Glad you chose to appreciate more of "Nights". Nicely done.
@SG-js2qn
@SG-js2qn Год назад
Interesting to see you cover the different versions. Generally, with pop music, the studio version is the best production, and the live version is for fans who have already listened to the studio version hundreds of times, so they often change it up in some way. As others have said, this is a concept album, and well worth the listen all the way through. It's kind of like Vivaldi's Four Seasons, except going through the hours of the day. "Tuesday Afternoon" is another track to highlight. If you're up for more symphonic music from the same period, give a listen to the theme from the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. That film score is from 1966, and the Moody Blues album "Days of Future Passed" is from 1967.
@double00spy

Days of Future Past is meant to be a whole piece. It was one of the first concept albums, in which each song is a part of a complete story. Tuesday Afternoon from this album is also brilliant.

My husband saw them three times in the Chicago area (our hometown). The first time in the seventies he saw a stripped down version (no orchestra) and he said although he enjoyed it, it left him a little underwhelmed. In the 90s he saw them just over the border in Merrillville, Indiana with the Northern Indiana Orchestra and he said it was just magical! A few years later he went back to the same venue because he had enjoyed them so much!!

I saw them live around the same time as this one, and the WHOLE concert was absolutely gorgeous, lighting, full orchestra behind them. I bought the album "Days of Future Passed" when it first came out and when I was a student at Kent State University. This entire album and especially "Nights in White Satin" as so many memories for me of listening to it for the first time with about 10 of my college friends, sitting in one of our off campus friends apartment, everyone cross legged on the floor and just listening to this album...I don't know WHY it stays with me, that evening. but it was SUCH an AUDIO experience. I LOVE it. Funny, because NOW I AM a "senior" (76 years old) and WISH I was young again....but NOT young in the present time, that I could GO BACK to 1967 when I was young and a student at Kent. THANK you for reacting to this unbelievably BEAUTIUFUL song.

You really need to listen to the complete album. It starts with a poem that greets the new day, as it finishes with that poem you heard as the day is fading away. And all the songs within the album are celebrations of the day, starting with Dawn, the Morning. Then it takes you thru lunch, and afternoon (another very popular song from this album, Tuesday Afternoon, which is also worth a listen), then on to evening and of course, the Nights.

Hi ladies, thanks for your great reaction again. Don't stress over the comments. Everyone has their favourite version of classic songs and there is no way to guess which one to choose. The fact you are reacting to it is enough. Music is so emotional to different people in different ways and those differences are what makes people interesting and gives us an insight to their interpretation, which is also great. It's all about musical upbringing and experiences and we learn from each others perspective, which I did in this reaction. I've never heard the live version with the album monologue added to it so that was a new experience for me and I thank you for it. Well done. Lots of love to you both. Pottsy.

Studio originals are considered as better or best in most cases and I think they are because that was where ,,in a large percentage ,, the songs were born to be put out to the world , it was the work in the studio that made it happen, but for folk musicians is where that can be an exception , .Live versions are better for a secondary listen

The song is part of a concept album covering a day or a life of a person. The ending poem, "Late Lament", is a bookend to the entire album. It refers to the end of a day or a life of a person. It is a companion to the opening poem, both written by the drummer Graeme Edge. The first poem, called "Morning Glory", also mentions the cold hearted orb which is the moon and is the dawn of the day.

This is the wedding song for my wife and I, and I can't help but smile, sway when I hear it. I put the album on every anniversary, and this being the final song, we usually end up dancing in the kitchen. 20 years next year! If you ever check out the entire album, the opening starts with a poem that makes this a cycle. As a concept album, it's a 'day in the life' - hence Days Of Future Passed. You would be well served to react to the whole thing - then it really puts Nights into perspective. Great reaction ladies, thanks!

I have seen the Moody Blues in concert several times. They always work with local orchestras to play along with their music. Long Island, NY (where I spent most of my life) it was the Long Island Symphony Orchestra who worked beautifully with the Moodies. Every time they played this song, I would close my eyes and sway to the music. Most of the time they would include "Late Lament" as the finisher for "Nights". Somehow the song would never feel complete without that poem.

Well done, on your review. I first heard the album Days of Future Pass 52 years ago. Yes, it's timeless. I believe Justin was 19 years old when he wrote the song, and he did it in 1 day. When the symphony, at the end, enters the Kingdom, that always makes me get the chills. In this live concert, this song was done at the half-way point. It's not their encore song, as no one would think of standing up while this song was being performed. The poem was written by Graham Edge (drummer), and the narration is done by Mike Pinder (keyboards and mellotron), who had a great voice, and was also one of the 4 lead singers in the band.

Justin Hayward is a musical genius. He wrote this when he was just 19.

Having experienced the album and a 1990's live show at Red Rocks in Colorado I vote for the Album for technical perfection. I vote for the live show for emotional excellence. Both had excellent orchestral backup (London Symphony Orchestra on the album and the Denver Symphony Orchestra at the live show. The album is a concept album meant to highlight a typical day in the life . . . listened to from start to finish. (similar to Dark Side of the Moon)

Their first commercial hit, that I know of is a song called "Go Now." The band reformed after that and the rest is history!! Total different sound from that first hit!

That was with Denny Laine instead of Justin Hayward.

Bessie Banks did the original. The Moodies found the blues/rhythm-and-blues competition too tough at the height of the British Invasion, so they regrouped and discovered the Mellotron.

The best band ever. Seen them live many times and have the Long Distance Voyager album autographed by them all. Most underrated band.

It's not just one song. It's the end of a concept album that describes one day and also one life in one beautiful masterpiece.

The Moody Blues were/are a concept band like Pink Floyd and a couple of well known bands. So there will be a few versions of their great songs. Horses for courses really as to whichones people like/enjoy. Yuo should react to 'Go Now'. Love to hear what you think.

As beautiful the music is from the Album and it will indeed move my/your soul. This live version contains a Passion not heard anywhere else. Justin Hayward sings the words " Oh how I love You" with a meaning not heard in any other song by any other band. You can feel the ache. Everyone else also steps up their game. I've seen them 5 times with 2 of them with the full Orchestra. To this day the 2001 concert at Paul Masson Winery (2000 seat) in Ca. is the best and my favorite of the 40 or so concerts by any other band. An 80 year old man to my left, and a teenager on my wife's right side, along with every member of the audience sang every word to every song. Showing their music crosses generations.Ushers were dancing in the Isles. I still have the jersey I bought but sad to say it doesn't fit anymore. They are tied with Tom Petty 5 times also but I'll take the Moody Blues being a fan since 1973 and I'm now 68.

The album version was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, It was the first time any of the modern music groups had done this, your listening to the beginning of Progressive Rock leading to YES,TRAFFIC, FLOYD, Etc.

I must very respectfully disagree. The live version shows how the great Moody Blues have aged like a fine wine, only becoming richer (and more powerful). Thank you kindly, ladies! Most channels would never listen to their subscribers and try different versions.

If you're talking about the LIVE version with the full orchestra a NUMBER of years later versus the original album version - THAT is a DILEMMA -- maybe listen to the original, THEN review the later when they were older live orchestral-supported version -- and I think that's what you did -- LOVE your listening & appreciation of the song

The best version of almost every song is the original. It is no different with "Nights In White Satin" which was releases november 10th. 1967. You won't be dissapointed. Enjoy!
