A Question Of Balance, 1970, was The Moody’s attempt to create an album of songs they could perform well live, or were more suited to the concert setting. Saw them once in 2005 and had tears welling up because I couldn’t believe this music was being performed. Now more years and here it is again. Thanks Hanier Family

The Moody's albums in their core album days, are conceptual and stand out singles don't give an entire story. My favorite band of all time. They strike the right chords.

Nice reaction guys and thanks for the shout out! The Moodies are another band that don't follow the herd, doing their own thing incredibly well. I have never been into classical music but their album 'Days of future passed' with the London Festival Orchestra is a masterpiece. It is the story of a day, ending with one of the all time classic songs 'Nights in white satin'! Shame on you Cynthia ;-) Like Pink Floyd, the Moodies are best experienced listening to the whole albums so you get the full context of the music. Cheers

I am so glad that you played Question. I felt that you may like it Cynthia, and Chris seemed to like it too. Another Moody Blues song that has always made me feel good is, from their album, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, "The Story In Your Eyes". Another up tempo performance.

the Mighty Moody Blues. 16 studio albums, 7 concept albums in a row and a catalogue of over 200 songs. a rare group brought together by divine intervention. this was actually 2 different songs both written in C that were incomplete so they put them together. the song Go Now was a different group of guys then. thats why this sounds so different. from days of future passed to this album question are the 7 concept albums and should be listened to in their entirety

The sound quality was excellent. John Lodge's bass is a feature of the 'fast' bits, and you can hear every note he plays. If you're intrigued by this band you ought to try one of the many songs that don't feature Justin Hayward as lead vocalist. The Moody Blues were nothing if not a democratic outfit. John Lodge - Isn't Life Strange (another massive hit in the UK) and Ride My See-Saw Ray Thomas - Dear Diary and Legend Of A Dream (a proper psychedelic epic) Mike Pinder - Lost In A Lost World and The Best Way To Travel Graeme Edge got into the act too, but more with the spoken word.

The Moody Blues used the studio really well in the 60's & had a solid run. In the 70's & 80's they became bland. Dear Diary is my favorite song of theirs.

it was really 2 songs - and Justin Hayward kind of merged them into what you listened to - and it works!! that 12 string guitar, a great bass line from John Lodge, mellotron from Mike Pinder creating that orchestral layer. the love song part in the middle is quite capivatiing.

Hi, Cynthia and Chris: You dissing Nights In White Satin, Cynthia? I love the Moody Blues; they are one of my top three favourites. They have SO many good ones when you are familiar with all of their main eight albums. I like this one although it is not one of my favourites of theirs. It was good to hear the horns at the start or whatever that conglomeration of sound is because as of late, people have been uploading the hit version that is missing that. Great reaction and thank you for doing this. Keep playing the good ones.

Their style of music is generally very ethereal and can seem almost lethargic. Not to me, but I'm just saying. That Pink Floyd-Moody Blues type style can be an acquired taste. But like this song shows, they mix up their styles well. To really understand, you'd need to hear their seven core albums, starting with Days of Future Passed. Some herbal assistance could help. Try 'Legend of a Mind' written and sung by their now deceased flute player, Ray Thomas.
@michaeldean4704
@michaeldean4704 Месяц назад
No orchestra on this one. All the "string" sounds were courtesy of keyboardist Mike Pinder and his Mellotron. It was the Mellotron that gave the Moodies much of their symphonic sound during the "Core-7" era.

The Moodies were one of the first to build "walls of sound" by using the mellotron to simulate orchestral sounds.
@joebloggs396
@joebloggs396 5 месяцев назад
The Moody Blues on most of their major albums didn't use an orchestra. This song uses a mellotron which is a keyboard instrument that uses sound samples . Folk was an influence on their music, including on this album, A Question of Balance. A shame you didn't put up the sleeve art of that album. They had quite a few uptempo songs, some mentioned here like I'm Just a Singer.

This song is the result of songwriter Justin Hayward having two incomplete songs that he couldn't find a way to finish, so he combined them - that's why the middle is so different from the start and finish. (The same is true of Gary Numan's "Are 'Friends' Electric?" but that's a story for another day)

Hiya guys. James Popeko here again 🙂👍. I would love it if you could react to a very very early song by Gary Numan. It’s from his album “The Plan”. This is before his days of using the different keyboards and when he was into his punk phase. The album “The Plan” is under his band name”Tubeway Army”. The song I would love for you to listen to is called “ Blue Eyes”. I think you will like this one. It’s a pretty fast song and not very long but it’s so good. Thanks.

I agree with you on "Knights in White Satin". To me it's like "Eleanor Rigby" without the character development. Give me something compelling to latch onto. The Moody Blues are like that, though. Even "Tuesday Afternoon" is a bit too ethereal and indistinct for me to get behind without those soaring transitions and the melotron knocking me senseless. "The Question" is a little more specific, but it roars a little bit and instrumentally, when The Blues heat up the tempo, they'll run you over and leave tire tracks. In a good way.
