The charity I strongly endorse is called Health in Harmony. It funds a hospital in Borneo that provides affordable health care to villages on the edge of a national park in return for a pledge not to cut down trees. The pledges are monitored, and the result has been a dramatic decrease in deforestation rates and an increase in the health of the local population.
Thanks to your generous contributions, the founders are spreading the idea to other countries.

CORRECTIONS:
At 10:56 the chart shows that the 34% group of people not convinced the earth is round were 18-24 year olds. I wrongly described them as millennials.
THE MOON IS MADE OF CHEESE:
The first three minutes of the video are, of course, bullshit - but not complete bullshit. As with all conspiracies, most of the information is correct. John Heywood’s quote, the microscopic images of cheese, Earth’s volcanic rock and moonrock are all genuine, as is the chemical process by which cheese is formed. Also correct are the fact that amino acids have been found in meteorites, the NASA budget graph, the Scientific American Article, and just about everything else I show. Even the Journal of Eclectic Science is real, and as reputable as any journal cited by other conspiracies.
What I’ve done is twist things slightly. For example, at 1:16 there ARE reasons why amino acids can’t form carboxylic acids on the moon - for one thing, they would be bombarded with radiation and break apart.
At 1:47 the microscope photos (known as thin sections) are all correct, but what I didn’t mention is that volcanic rock comes in many different forms. Moon rock is composed of tiny pellets of molten rock that solidified very quickly, which is why it looks very different to large grained volcanic granite shown in the other thin section.

Potholer, When I was a PhD student a few decades ago, I can't remember anyone offering me a nice fat grant for faking data and writing about complete bullshit. In fact, after 36 years as a student, tutor and lecturer, I must have somehow missed that bus completely. Now I am going to demand lots of free money in "grants" hopefully provided by conspiracy theorists. On another matter, since the moon is made from cheese, can I get some free camembert?

Didn't you see the actual bus waiting for you outside after you just successfully defended your dissertation? It had illuminati written on it with big, bold letters. But unfortunately it's only on one side so sometimes when the bus parks across the street you won't see it. Must've been what happened. But it's okay I'll talk to my illuminati contact and tell him to hook you up. Right now we're faking researches that 5g towers do not cause corona and we need all the help we can get.
@Ninjaeule97
@Ninjaeule97 11 месяцев назад
It's cause you weren't faking/misrepresenting data for some large financial interest or your own religions biases. Dr. Roy Spencer (Ph.D. In meteorology) on the other hand took money from Peabody Energy (a coal company) to sow doubt about climate change. He even lied (by ommission) in his about section that his research is entirely funded by US government agencies and that he has never been asked by some oil company for his service. I wrote him an email telling him about his conflict of interest but the email address on his website no longer works. I was send to him by some climate change denier and I knew there was something fishy so I followed the money. By the way he is also a creationist. What I find so dangerous is that he is an actual climatologists so I can understand why it could even fool sceptical people. Maybe Potholer should make an video about him so hopefully he eventually takes his site down.

DEFINITION: If you have a theory that a scientific conclusion is phoney because of a conspiracy of scientists to fake data, that is a conspiracy theory. You are therefore a conspiracy theorist. If you don't like the term, don't be a conspiracy theorist. And please note this is a science channel, about science, and this video deals with conspiracy theories about scientists faking data. If you have some great examples of military or political or criminal conspiracies outside of that, please take them to another channel that deals with those issues. Or tip the charity jar $5.

I’ve come across a lot of conspiracy theorists that don’t get this simple definition. Instead, they try to redefine science as conspiracy and the scientific community as conspiracy theorists arguing that they are they enlightened ones and that we are the deluded ones. The irony is that they do this whilst using their phone or computer and relying on hundreds of other things that were a product of the science they deny. You just can’t win with people that stupid! 😂
@johnnyjones5385
@johnnyjones5385 4 года назад
@potholer " scientific conclusion is phoney because of a conspiracy of scientists to fake data, that is a conspiracy theory. You are therefore a conspiracy theorist." people like Peter Boghossian & James Lindsay proved the scientific peer review process is influence by other factors than just pure science. Peer review papers like ""The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AZZNvT1vaJg.html Yeah I know.... It's not a so called real science therefore it's not the same.......Or the not all peer review process is the same........ Analogy. ME: There is a drug problem is sports. You are golfer: There's no drug problem in golf. It's different than everything else. We have tests and protocols for avoiding these problems. It just doesn't happen. And if it does it's minor and as no consequences.

Years ago, for fun, I started promoting a "theory" that there's no such thing as photons, that in fact the Universe is made of darkons, and that stars absorb darkons which why they appear bright. The funniest part was the rare occasions when I ran into someone with actual scientific knowledge who said this was ridiculous; all I had to do is say, "Well, it's just a theory scientists are researching," and everyone would dismiss the poor skeptic as close-minded.

@potholer54 A couple of points. First, the two Irish individuals you mentioned at around the 6 minute mark are a father and son team, not brothers. I recently did some reading on that for an article in writing, so I’ll cite some research on that when I get back to my computer later. I don’t think you listed the research I’m going to mention. I should add, to anybody unaware that this book exists, I found it merely by reading up on Peter Hadfield. Not once has he plugged his publication and very little has he discussed his lengthy career writing for New Scientist magazine. In fact he doesn't even seek to gain financial gain from these videos, personal acclaim or profit. I'm sure many would agree that Peter is a fine example of a human being who selflessly shares a lifelong passion for science and education. Anybody looking to source the book should be able to pick up a copy online published by Pan books ISBN No.0-330-343580-X Sadly it is no longer in print but I expect it will make for fascinating reading. Thank you Peter.

Critical thinking and proper modern research needs to be emphasized more in grade schools. I wasn't tought either until college, and I was fortunate enough to have an instructor who seen the importance of it.

Scientific method, statistics, logic and logical fallacies are almost all completely absent unless you are studying STEM related fields, and even there REALLY serious training on those things starts at college level. I can see this in so many things: I'm into photography and you wouldn't belive the amount of complete ignorance and quackery of simple concepts. Even when you present people with the factual evidence they just either insult you or refuse it just because they are too fixated with their own model.

I couldn’t agree more with what you said about people who failed science class embracing conspiracies to make themselves feel more intelligent. I’ve been saying that for ages. The internet gives people who were the class clowns at school an “I’m not dumb, it was the system that was wrong all along” echo chamber.

I actually checked, and John Heywood actually died 3 years before the earliest recorded mention of cream cheese. It's possible it existed before this, but... it probably wasn't called cream cheese. I doubt this was deliberate, but a LOT of conspiracies like this Cream Cheese Moon one fail incredibly basic tests like that one, so it's kinda appropriate.
