I commend you Thomas, used to be a huge fan of yours for the longest time and was one of those keto and fasting zealots. Then I was introduced to Biolayne and found out you were full of crap on a lot of things and it shattered my understanding of how to loose fat. Went through a resentment phase and then I saw your sit down conversation with Layne and gained some respect for you again. I am happily off of Keto and Fasting and enjoy diet sodas once again and am able to maintain a healthy weight.

Personally i always go back to fasting because its easier for me, eating one meal per day and i am older at 50. My ancient old doctor explained weight loss to me 40 years ago. "If it taste good spit it out! You can't have it". The more modern interpretation of that is eat less calorie dense and less palatable food in moderation (ie calorie restriction). It worked for a 50% weight loss and 40 years of weight maintenance. When you get tired of trying all the "New Age" scams try the method that actually has a 100% success rate. No one in the human race has ever proven to be immune to starvation (ie calorie restriction). If you are not losing weight the restriction just isn't high enough.

It’s funny when you ask “why aren’t these low carb people jacked?” I was on keto, don’t get me wrong, I lost a lot of weight. Problem was, even though I worked out religiously, I looked bad (physically no shape), vowel movements were a Russian roulette, hair was thinning, and overall did not seem healthy. I found you and a slap in the face to go with it… the realization that keto, if followed properly, is pretty much reduction of calorie intake. That left the question, why not follow an all around healthy diet where I track macros and calorie intake? I bought a food scale and began the journey of tracking macros and calories, as well as being conscious of eating healthy whole foods. I gained weight at first, noticeably good weight, and then lost it as I still need to lose fat weight and build a better body… but this time, it’s strictly through healthy eating habits, working out, and most importantly measuring macros and calorie intake.

I know a woman who's been doing Keto for 2 years straight without let up. She lost a bit of weight initially, but remained fat. I convinced her to walk 40 to 60 minutes per day, and now she's losing some fat. But she's still a long way from being LEAN. Low Carb is not a magic formula for anything.
@NickD25
@NickD25 2 года назад
That's the thing most don't understand. There's no secret in fat loss. Best example is the actual bariatric surgery. What are they doing? Reducing the size of the stomach you ended up eating..... less!! It's magic lol. The true hard aspect of losing weight is hunger management and making it simple enough that it's not a burden.
@westfieldartworks8188
@westfieldartworks8188 2 года назад
@@NickD25 Yeah, you're right on the money there. Clarence Bass, who wrote the series of Ripped books, says that MOVEMENT has a major role on how lean you will be. Not only does it give you a significantly high number of daily calories OUT,...but movement also plays a major role on calories IN, as high levels of movement help with hunger management. The more you move (walk), the more under control your blood glucose levels will be. Also with high levels of daily movement, your hunger and satiety hormones in the brain; Ghrelin and Leptin, will work much more efficiently. You'll be less hungry, and will feel more full, sooner, within a meal, which is a CALORIE INTAKE CONTRO TOOL. Walking or high levels of daily movement will also send signals through the central nervous system, that you're doing something daily in high volume, that you would perform better, if you were leaner. The body responds to that stimuli by creating additional fat burning enzymes within the muscle cells. But still....even all of that, is STILL something related to Calories OUT. A high fiber diet....fills you up faster, which helps then control Calories IN. Increases in basal metabolic rate increases Calories OUT. A lot of RU-vidrs are pushing the idea of Fat Loss Secrets....and they're are NONE. And like what you mentioned about bariatric surgery....yep, same deal, reduces Calories IN.

@@Jordy-927 I agree. I did Keto back in 1998 -1999, for 14 months. I lost weight, but my body composition ultimately was not that good. I apparently lost a surprisingly high amount of muscle. Possibly calories too low...not sure. And YES...water loss is a big part of the intitial weight loss. I still have my diet journal from those years. LOTS of eggs and cheese, and very little in the way of fruits and vegetables...greens, fiber, and all the rich nutrients that exist within all those fruits and vegetables... I'll never go back to it. I got MJCH leaner on a diet of 55% carbs. I looked better, and all the fiber helped me control calories and my workouts have never been better. I'll be 60 years old next year, and I'm still setting new PR's on the indoor bike, and currently working towards a new Deadlift PR.

It all comes down to calories in/calories out. No calorie deficit, no fat loss. Keto can be a viable method of fat loss, but no more so than any other diet. Some people find it easier to maintain a deficit on keto because of the increased satiety from high fat and protein, and the reduced appetite that comes with ketosis. Others feel weak and shitty and performance suffers and they can't stick to it. It's all about adherence - the "best" diet is the one that provides sufficient protein and a caloric deficit, that an individual can stick to long term.

Here’s my anecdote: I lost 40+ lbs and went from over 20% body fat to 6.5% BF in six months by reducing my caloric intake and running a lot. I counted calories but didn’t pay the slightest attention to macros. Probably ate a lot of carbs and fat. But it worked because every day I ate fewer calories than I burned. Switched to maintenance calorie levels and maintained my weight for about eight more months. Still didn’t track macros, still ate tons of carbs and probably a good amount of fat. Then ran a sub-3 hour marathon. Layne’s underlying principles work.

Would really love for a follow up video on the "constrained total energy expenditure" model central to Herman Pontzer's book "Burn." You touched on the subject/Pontzer's research about a year ago and concluded that exercise can still play an important role in weight loss. However, in his book Pontzer claims otherwise, stating that "constrained daily energy expenditure means that increasing daily activity through exercise...will ultimately have little effect on the calories burned per day...[and] durable, meaningful changes in daily energy expenditure are extremely difficult to achieve through exercise." I'm sure you've got plenty more to say on the subject and would love to hear all of it!

I think some people (conveniently?) forget that extended periods of zone two cardio burns calories and is also fairly non-taxing on the body, which makes it very sustainable for both fitness and weight loss goals.

Can you talk about what to do if you actually have chronic high inflammation? As in consistently elevated CRP and PV (blood plasma viscosity)? You see a lot of videos talking about low inflammatory foods or 'eat this to lower inflammation' or 'avoid these five foods if you want to help inflammation' etc. Is food even something that can have a positive/negative effect on chronic inflammation? Or is chronic inflammation idiopathic (I've been told this by a few doctors)? Would be very helpful to hear what is actually known and recommended about this problem. Thank you.

Anecdote WARNING: I was 220lbs decided to lose weight. Did jogging every day. Lost about 50-60lbs. Looked like a pencil and ppl made me notice it. I decided to start lifting weights and just eat whatever I wanted to build as much muscle as possible. Slowly got fat again. 225lbs. 2nd attempt: lost 66lbs in 4 months by doing carnivore diet OMAD and lifting weights 5 times a week. Got a better physique than last time that I did only cardio. My legs still looked like pencils though. Finally I decided to control my bulking phase and gained like 25lbs from summer to winter. Now I lost about 20lbs from winter to summer and for the first time I can measure my actual gains because I got to the same body fat percentage of last year but I weight 5 pounds more and obviously my lifts went up. I'm 31, 6'0, 170lbs - about 12%bf EDIT: I always had irritable bowels that's why carnivore worked so well. Now I added non soluble fibers instead of soluble ones that make me bloated for days such as broccoli (salads and meat together work so well for my intestine) and I take carbs mainly from fruit, ice cream and treats, like 400-600kcal in a normal day. I don't have any problems digesting lactose.

Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune, you can't get it just because you exercise. And in most cases it doesn't go away. But even if you do have it (like I do for example), it's not an excuse to be overweight. It may make it harder to lose weight (simply because your maintenance calories are lower because you tire easily) but most of the time, it should not be that much of an issue, especially if you take your medication
