In this review of the 20 gauge version of Mossberg's shotgun that's not really a shotgun, we take a look at why the very concept of the Shockwave makes it a lousy choice for personal protection.

Some of your examples given in the video are relevant to using this weapon, however the gun is far from useless. As a retired police officer with the last decade of service as a firearms' instructor, I fell in love with it on first sight. I was in the local gun shop purchasing some ammo when I spotted this on the wall. I could see that for the gun to be accurate it had to be held up and away from the face, as you demonstrated. In practice, firing a gun from the hip is extremely inaccurate unless continuous practice is used. I passed on purchasing it and sometime later was reading about the Crimson side mounted laser sight. I order the Crimson and the next day purchased a shockwave in 20ga (I am 74 and have no business messing with a 12ga "handgun"). I mounted the Crimson and took the shockwave to the range. It worked fantastic. Point and shoot, on target every time. The farthest distance I have to shoot in my house is 25 feet, at that distance the spread is about chest wide with No.3 Buck. It is my go-to gun for defending my house now. One caveat; if someone feels like repeating this, get the green laser if you want to fire the weapon in outside in full sunlight, as the red while perfect inside or on cloudy days will wash out in sunlight. Thanks for your videos, I find them informative and interesting.

A laser and an acog scope six flashlights four batteries a large bandolier with absurd 3-inch Magnum ammo a bipod and let's see what else can we put on it? Oh yeah we need to add all kinds of rails to it. Then and only then will it be worth anything 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Anyway on a serious note.. the only reason I don't have one of these yet is because of the legality with putting a telescoping stock AR pistol grip on it. I have tactical shotguns that have just a pistol grip I don't need another one. But the 500 the 870 or the 590 shockwave with an adjustable AR pistol grip that's something I would like. Small backpack size also an NFA item I believe if you do that to it. But they did approve I say they okay the shit staying ATF they approved one only one shoulder mounted pistol brace for those for now. But you know how they work. You give him a few days a week or months and they'll change their mind. That's the only reason I don't have one yet. I don't like the grip that it comes with and if I can't put a shoulder stock on it I don't want it. It is a badass little piece of hardware though. Pardon my language but nothing says fuck you like a 12 gauge

The shockwave provides more mobility and ergonomics in CQC, also it is worth considering that longer shotguns make it earlier for the opposition to reach the gun faster and misdirect the barrel or disarm you completely. The shotgun clearly is not intended for long-range shooting, so I think you misjudged the weapon. It is a good truck gun, compact for survival/bear protection for hikers or those living in certain areas, and even an affective option in the case of home defense.

I had a Mossberg Mariner 12 gauge with a pistol grip. I too found firing it to the side from shoulder level was best, and it took some practice to become proficient with it. I later modified it for home defense with tritium sights and a short stock. The 3-point control of a rifle makes a shotgun a much more effective weapon, hands down.

I had a Mossberg 500A in Mariner finish. Beautiful 12 gauge pump. A buddy of mine needed the money he sold it to me for a hundred bucks. I was with him when he bought that shotgun like a year earlier I don't even think he put an entire 25 round box of birdshot through it I mean yeah it was a little dirty but he never shot it and I gave him a hundred bucks for it. It's all he wanted. How could I say no to that? I always wanted one and I mean I know other companies manufacture this particular finish but I mean other companies you know that's not a mossberg. And when it comes to shotguns especially pump shotguns I'm really particular. It's always Mossberg and remington. But yeah the Mariner that it's a beautiful firearm it is the Mossberg 500 mariner.. I've never seen one of those with even the slightest bit of corrosion or rust at all. Actually come to think of it.. I haven't seen very many Mossberg shotguns ever that have very much rust or corrosion. I just bought a Mossberg New Haven 680 like 3 or 4 days ago. Manufactured in March of 79. There's three or four spots with tiny little corroded surface Rust. It's 100% interchangeable with the 500A 12 gauge. And it is the smoothest action pump I have ever in my life handled. Anyway thanks for reading my rant tin man. Stay safe out there 🙏🇺🇸

As it stands right now the middle of December 2022 the ATF currently says it's okay to put only one brand one very particular AR style pistol grip that will allow you to shoulder Mount that weapon onto it and it does not become an NFA item. I don't recall the name and model of the shotgun pistol brace but there is one. I'm kind of hanging on to see if they're going to stick with that because if they are then I will go out and I will get one definitely in 12 gauge. But if they're going to change their fucking mind and be like oh well you know you got to register the register it amnesty blah blah blah blah I'm just not going to bother. Hell it wasn't that long ago you couldn't get these things anywhere unless you know it involved an sot. I have to strongly disagree. The Shockwave is an excellent choice for home defense. Mine is crazy accurate and has very fast target acquisition; once you figure out how to shoot it properly, it becomes a pleasure to put rounds through. Its size is also better suited for maneuvering inside a house; I would definitely grab it before I grabbed my full-size 870.
@LinkHyrule03
@LinkHyrule03 6 лет назад
Or you could go bullpup: Short length (26.1" for KSG), superior capacity, and you retain the ability to shoulder your shotgun. Your shockwave might be "accurate" at the range because you take your time. Try taking a class or putting yourself on a shot timer. When you try to be fast, your accuracy will degrade significantly.
@scifiworkshop
@scifiworkshop 6 лет назад
I don't find that to be true at all. I've done speed drills with the Shockwave, with targets at different angles and heights, and it performs great. I've also handled a KSG, and I would consider it more of a range toy than the Shockwave. The KSG doesn't have enough mass to adequately absorb recoil, so that energy is going to be absorbed by your shoulder, where as the Shockwave's recoil is mitigated greatly by allowing the gun to travel back and down after each shot. Also, the Shockwave is less likely to malfunction than the KSG. You should try picking up a Shockwave and putting it through its paces, I think you'll find it a superior home defense gun.
@LinkHyrule03
@LinkHyrule03 6 лет назад
The Shockwave loses the greatest single feature of long guns: the stock. Bullpup shotguns keep that while reducing the length. Fine, you don't like the KSG because you don't trust Kel Tec quality, the KSG was just an example. You could also go with Standard Manufacturing's DP-12, which has more than enough mass to absorb recoil very well, while keeping a short length, high capacity, and the ability to be shouldered. It also has an amazing reputation for quality and reliability. Or you could go IWI's TS12, which is semi-auto. Given IWI's reputation, we can assume that it will be uncompromisingly reliable. If you really think the shockwave is great, then it seems you don't want to listen to any of the experts in the field. A LOT of them have spoken against stockless shotguns.
@scifiworkshop
@scifiworkshop 6 лет назад
I will take my own experience over "experts", yes. The weakness of bullpup shotguns is that they have a shoulder stock, but not enough mass to mitigate recoil. This is a poor design, and not well suited for any real purpose other than range toy. The Shockwave on the other hand doesn't share this weakness, so it performs much better as a home defense gun than any bullpup ever could.

Use a pressure switch, but honestly if you're using for strictly home defense and technically can't shoot someone outside of your house, you really don't need a light (would be helpful in the dark). I'd say average shot inside a house isn't more than 20 feet, with a shotgun I'd say using buckshot you'd just have to point in direction and even if off slightly you'd still do significant damage. As stated previously, I have a Mossberg M500CRUISER. I has a smooth bore and not rifled. As of lately, I've been using 12 ga slugs and double and triple ought buck shot.

This firearm is not useless or mostly useless by any stretch of the imagination; it's just not a beginner's pump shotgun. Just because you can't shoot the gun accurately doesn't mean that other people can't either. With a bit of practice and proper technique, this firearm can be perfectly accurate at the distances you'd be defending yourself at (15 or so yards).

If you really have SO MUCH training with stockless shotguns that you really are crazy effective with them (hint, you aren't that good), then you will STILL be better with a shotgun that has a stock.
@LinkHyrule03
@LinkHyrule03 6 лет назад
I have used stockless shotguns a decent amount, but before the shockwave came out. I honestly tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. The shot timer always indicated that having the stock was better, and by a significant amount. The shockwave doesn't change it at all, just shortens the barrel by 4 inches and instead adds a grip that is a few inches longer. InRangeTV has done a pretty solid video testing stockless shotguns: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tYjThckYqBQ.html

Far from being perfect. Shotgun without stock < Shotgun with stock. or if you want something smaller in size. .44 magnum revolver or 10mm pistol works better because at least you can aim it.
@MrInzombia

240pixel i think this gun actually aims better and youll have a better chance at delivering a kill shot with double aught buckshot than a heavy recoiling revolver
@240pixel
@240pixel 5 лет назад
@@MrInzombia aims better? 12 gauge in such a small package has a lot of recoil and unlike handgun you can't extend it. So you ether shoot it from your hip like mossberg recomends or put it infront of your face meaning that gun can jump and hit you in your face. Shotguns without a stock are fucking stupid. InrangeTV done a great video explaining why.

Yeah perfect if you always shoot with it. Over other firearms you can get an carry this just falls short due to you having to solely practice just to be good with this.

The video and assessment are appreciated. I've owned the Mossberg for a few months now--I've had it at the range a number of times now, and I'm pretty comfortable with it at this point, both shooting "from the hip" and aiming it from chest/neck height. I think everything you say is valid, but as I've stated elsewhere, having grown up in the venerable city of Detroit, where I've lived in mostly old buildings with small rooms, tight corners, and short hallways (such as the beautiful old building I've been living in for the past 5 years), it's hard not to view the Shockwave as the most practical home defense option for my particular situation (compared to something like the full-size 590)...

I'm new gun owner and this was my first purchase. I went to the range for a lesson and at 15 yards (longest distance in my house) I had no trouble aiming this firearm at all. And when I turned on the laser saddle I added it was almost pinpoint accurate shooting slugs...not sure how anyone could think this is useless....

He has a couple of other videos where he will "professionally" crap on a firearm for personal reasons. "Expert opinions" is all lol. It's a great shotgun. He hated the NAA mini-revolvers too, but most of the owners in the comments section loved it.

@@bigwavesun my opinion of the NAA minis has dropped radically of late...have two that have ceased working entirely and a .22 mag version that often misfires...carrying one of these in your pocket endlessly and counting on it to work in a pinch may very a bad idea....

@bigwavesun Год назад
@@frankpienkosky5688 not exactly my pick for a .22 revolver for carry. I'd go for a ruger or smitty for .22/mag. The NAAs are more fun guns honestly.
