✅Ingredients
Cake:
• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 2 cups granulated sugar
• ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 2 teaspoons baking soda
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 2 large eggs
• 1 cup buttermilk
• 1 cup warm water
• ⅓ cup vegetable oil
• 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Coconut Pecan Filling:
• ½ cup salted butter
• ½ cup granulated sugar
• ½ cup brown sugar
• 3 large egg yolks
• 12 ounce can evaporated milk
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 ½ cups unsweetened coconut flakes
• 1 cup chopped pecans
Chocolate Buttercream (optional):
• 1 cup butter, softened
• ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3-4 cups powdered sugar
✅Instructions
Cake:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter two 9-inch cake rounds. Dust with flour or cocoa powder and tap out the excess.
2️⃣ In a large bowl or stand mixer, stir together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until combined.
3️⃣ Add eggs, buttermilk, warm water, oil, and vanilla. Beat on a medium speed until smooth.
4️⃣ Divide batter evenly between the two pans.
5️⃣ Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
6️⃣ Cool on wire racks for 15 minutes and then turn out the cakes onto the racks and allow to cool completely.
Coconut Pecan Filling:
1️⃣ Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in sugar and brown sugar until combined.
2️⃣ Add in egg yolks, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat for 12 to 14 minutes until thickened, stirring frequently.
3️⃣ Remove from heat and stir in coconut flakes and pecans. Let cool completely, stirring occasionally, until spreadable.
Chocolate Buttercream (optional):
1️⃣ Make the frosting by In a large bowl, beat butter until fluffy using a hand mixer. Add in cocoa powder and vanilla extract. Beat until combined. Beat in powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating in between. Transfer to two piping bags for frosting.
Assemble Cake:
1️⃣ Use half of the coconut pecan filling and spread in between the two chocolate cake layers. Spread the other half on top of the cake.
2️⃣ If using buttercream, spread the frosting on the outside of the cake and use a piping tip to decorate the top edge.

This is a great recipe & video. One comment though, I don't cook the vanilla extract in the frosting. It should added AFTER it is taken off the stove. Cooking evaporates the alcohol and vanilla flavoring so it should not be heated.

My physician said he loves German Chocolate Cake. I may make this as cupcakes, pack some in a bakery box and bring them to my next appointment. I am so grateful that even during this Covid crisis, he was there for his patients!

Not a German Chocolate cake. German Chocolate Cake is made with Bakers German's Sweet Chocolate. It gets it's name from the guy who created that chocolate (1800s), Samuel German. He did not invent the cake. It was actually created in Texas in the late 1950s. Do not remember the woman's name who created the recipe.

Cake looks yummy..but u need to check ur measurements in the description box u have the measurements wrong u said 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar in the video in the description box said 11/2 flour and sugar

First I melt the German chocolate in some coffee and only need one splash of cocoa powder. I also separate the eggs. Yolks in the batter the the white meringues get folded into the batter last.

I only aw sweetened coconut flakes ummm, could i use less or amount suggested? and add less sugar to the frosting to balance it out?

Made this for a friend's birthday and it was a hit. Received lots of compliments. Followed recipe exactly except switched almonds with pecans due to an allergy.

Looks good i just wish people used grams. Cups is not an accurate measurement at all.

This cake is a 10/10 - We are sitting here enjoying a piece right now. I grew up eating this cake minus the chocolate frosting and have to say, the frosting is the extra touch that makes this perfection. My grandma made it for birthdays and always followed the Bakers Chocolate recipe (which I've always done as well) but this is so much better. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe 💕
