Hendrix's First Rays of the New Rising Sun has some of the coolest rhythm playing ever done imo. The progressions and fills in Astro Man, In From The Storm, Freedom, Roomful of Mirrors and the beautiful one take Hey Baby are just glorious. Very cool you breaking down what you hear on this track.
Probably my favorite along with Night bird flying. Do you ever notice that every famous guitarplayer who covers Hendrix never dies this song? Because it's hard to do.
Everytime I see one of your videos you inspire me to push myself to be better on guitar. After playing for 20 years I finally had a moment where I thought, "Hey! I think I am starting to get good on the guitar!" But I still have a looooooong way to go.
Great job editing this video. The pacing is perfect and so are the clear explanations of every part of the song. As usual, your Hendrix-inspired playing really makes me wish I could jam with you! I'd learn a thing or two 🙂
Tim, spectacular job! Thank you for finding and capturing Jimi‘ s performance on this track. I wonder if Jimi was having just as much fun as you were playing the jam?! Your awesome bro!
All those years on the road in soul bands gave Hendrix his rhythmic base. These are all James Brown, Isley brothers, Stax/Volt influenced. Curtis Mayfield was also a major influence on pieces like Little Wing, Castles Made Of Sand, The Wind Cries Mary. Those beautiful chord stylings and double stops were from Curtis. I think Steve Cropper may have been a touch point also. Jimi Hendrix was the best rhythm guitarist in rock history - he had "IT." And the "it" was SOUL.
I always figured Freedom to be rooted in c#7 with a minor 3rd voiced in the mix, with the high B and E string ringing open a fair amount, rather than it being based in Cm. The bass and phrase notes are in the relative minor scale, but I think its built on the major chord of that C#7,-3. Same as the Jimi purple haze shape, but in C# he gets the ringing B and E strings to drone along in it. Same Key/root as used in Aint No tellin, and even Crosstown Traffic, IMO.
Tim ... you are one of my guitar heroes ... hands down! If you all haven't as of yet, give the album "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" a listen. So many phenomenal R&B grooves and gems from Jimi
Awesome playing!! What I'd give for 1% of Tim's talent!! After watching this I'm somewhere between being inspired to practise like crazy or just giving up entirely :D
There was a maturity in Hendrix later recordings. You should cover 'Bleeding Heart' from War Heroes. A perfect solo and fills with some great rhythm guitar
You kinda mention it in passing but that open "E" is one of the glories of C# on guitar, especially the LOW E, because it's putting the sharp 9 in root. The "Hendrix chord" x 10.
Cry of Love....one of the best bands most people never heard of...lol....Aubrey Freed, the guitarist...(also of Black Crows) is an awesome player. Thanks Tim
Timothy, what are the effects you are using.I have that album. It sounds to and it has been over 25 years since I heard it but I think you are using artistic license. Really says good.Oh, I don't play anywhere as good as you. Like your show with Pete. Thx,J.
0:27 Tonality wise... really put me in that Robin Trower space instead of Hendrix (probably just the univibe-sh sounding flange), but yeah ..they're both right there. Sounded amazing.

I just found you over RU-vid, and I gotta say I love your feel on the guitar! And man! What a nice tone! Could you tell us about your rig? And your mods on this guitar? Thank you for sharing this.
What compressor did ya use Tim , The Distresser or the cali76,,,great playing and the sounds are great , staying clear articulate , Hendrix Aldo genius player when unpronounceable coz of his messy sound effects its a pity coz with a clean sound he was super , and imaging , at that age !*_*)
vhollund By this time in the studio I don't think Hendrix was using strictly the Fuzz Face for his leads or any parts. Live it gave him the easiest way to get the sounds, from clean to higher, gain levels. There were so many post effects they did as well.
vhollund I understood why you were asking in your comment. I've watched that video a few times over the last year or so. I look for any vids I can on Fuzz Face tones and knowledge in general. I love the sound. It's the main part of my own guitar sound. I've devoured any interview or tech talk with or about, Roger Mayer and the mods he did on those Dallas Arbiter's and Octavia's. Thanks for the link though, I haven't watched his vids in a few months, always inspires.
