The specific version of this Alleluia chant comes from the 14th century swiss codex Engelberg 314 and was traditionally, in the Germanic regions, sung either on feasts of the BVM or on the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost. But the chant itself dates back to the 11th century and can be found in at least 3 other manuscripts with slightly differing melodies, and a fourth with text only. It honors the Blessed Virgin Mary and the translated lyrics are as follows:
Alleluia. O Mary, red rose, delicate lily, sweet, gentle, and beautiful; the supreme joy of heaven; thou givest the light of the cell of Christ (some textual variants read: thou bright star of Christ), thou art the abundant vine; hear us, the poor, and pray for us. Be kind and lead us to your son, Virgin Mary. Alleluia.
This has been one of my all time favorite chants for more than 20 years and I was delighted to finally be able to sing it for you all.
NOTE: From August of 2023 my voice was suffering from vocal nodes (lesions on the vocal cords) which was diagnosed in April of 2024. I began therapy at home and they healed fairly well within a few months. Then I had singing lessons with Roberto delli Carri of the IVA and he not only helped me recover my singing voice but helped my voice improve beyond what it ever was before, with only four lessons. Thank you Roberto!
