San Agustin is the oldest stone church in the Philippines, and the only one of the seven churches inside Intramuros that survived the bombings by Japanese and American forces during World War II. It is indeed an architectural and cultural gem - the ceiling of the church is actually a painting, done in a style called Trompe l'oeil to give it a 3-D carved look. The church used to have two bell towers, but the left one (which housed the giant bell now on display) was damaged during the earthquake of 1880 and was removed. The statues on carriages in the museum are used for religious processions during Holy Week and feast days. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi whose tomb is beside the altar, is the Spanish Conquistador and the founder of the city of Manila in 1571. Giovani dibella and Cesare Albaroni is the Italian painters who painted the tromp le oil ceiling of San Agustin those tomb inside the church were the tomb of the Novel residents of Manila Intramuros
