The Celestarium is an accurate view of the night sky from the North Pole in the form of a pi shawl by Audrey Nicklen. The gradient I dyed was 14 years in the making, to create a yarn that looked like the swirling Northern Lights, with tiny fluorescent pops of color representing the stars. The hand painted glass beads are in the shape of constellations and they glow in the dark, adding another beautiful cosmic layer of complexity to the piece.
I started research and development on “galaxy themed” blacklight yarn with my first ever batch in 2008, and from 2014-2021 I did hundreds of gradients refining the technique to create a yarn that knits, crochets, and weaves like a galaxy no matter the stitch or craft. The color shifts from blue to purple to midnight blue, and the “starlike” pops of color go in the opposite direction, from a heavy concentration in the aquamarine and gradually fade at the edges to just 2 per repeat.
Enormous gratitude to Sierra of Upsetapplecart for the 450 hours of knitting to create this beautiful piece. And to Audrey, for creating a pattern so stunning I couldn’t stop thinking about how to make a yarn as beautiful as the execution of the Celestarium. Many skilled hands labored to bring this project to life.
