In this Episode of the "Reaching Your Peak" mini-series, (Episode #10), we have another story/lesson from Corey Jacobsen.
Randy joins Corey once again in this episode, as Corey shares the story of an tough archery elk hunt in Oregon from 2014.
The hunt itself was tough, but getting the elk back out to the road proved to push Corey’s limits. There may be been more extreme packouts, but none with as heavy of a pack for as long of a distance as Corey experienced on this hunt.
“Reaching Your Peak” will be published every other week, to fill in the gap between regular ElkTalk Podcast episodes. In this new mini-series, Corey will be sharing stories from his past elk hunts, and then detailing a strategy or tactic that was instrumental in the success of that hunt - or a lesson learned that has helped shape the way he hunts elk.

Did somewhat of a similar pack out in Oregon this November on my Buddy's Elk hunt.. First time I've ever reached my limits on a packout.. I could barley take a step I had way to much weight, almost my body weight.. Muscles weren't functioning properly, cramping up.. Was going up a steep incline and I sat down thinking I could use the hill to stand back up and that was it for me.. Even with help I couldn't get the bag back on no matter how hard I tried.. For the first time ever I had reached my limits and I NEVER give up or quit on a hunt.. Conditions were getting bad, snows been dumping on us for hours and our good gear was failing to keep us dry so we were soaked and starting to freeze.. We could barely see with the snow, the fog, and the night time.. With being in the backcountry in rough terrain I made the call to focus on our safety and hang the meat and come back the next morning.. Toughest pack out for me to date.. And I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT after i could sit back an reminisce lol.. Being out there teaches us so much and teaches us so much about ourselves.. I loved the story, thanks!!

I was surprised that you talked about a pack in Oregon as I thought that it would be the Alaska pack hands down. That was a brutal hunt. It was enjoyable to watch, but I said not going there!
