Both are legends. If Tiger didn't exist, people would be talking about Phil as the greatest player of the past 30 years without question. But Tiger _does_ exist, and even without matching Jack's 18 Majors, he's still, by far, the greatest this sport has ever seen. No one has ever transcended golf or probably any sport in existence like Tiger has. The athleticism of modern golfers, the huge purses, the massive draw PGA events get, the massive viewership they get, the huge rise in interest that has led to tons of modern PGA players, elevating the sport, is all a result of one completely unique person. Tiger.
There's legends of every sport.... We have people like Ronaldo and Messi in Football, Tiger and Phil in golf, Schumacher and Hamilton in F1, Sir Donald Bradman in cricket... I'm sure there's plenty more people could think of. Us sports fans love a good rivalry, it keeps things interesting.
Another thing to mention for Phil, around the time of Tigers injuries in the 2010's Phil was dealing with his wife and mother-in-law having breast cancer. At least to me Phil was the ideal family man while Tiger was the one everyone wanted to be.
I am not, nor will ever be, a Tiger Woods fan...but seriously....it's not a rivalry if you're getting your ass kicked every time you go up against this guy. Phil talked a lot of smack but never managed to beat Tiger one on one when it counted.
Not trying to interrogate ya or anything, just curious if the tiger thing is a culmination of actions or if there was one thing in particular that throws you off with him, anyway at least everyone seems to see that this could hardly ever be considered a rivalry. Have a good one!
@@fletcherfarris4350 My issue with Tiger is this...he is a narcissistic human being who is only good at one thing. However great his talent, he was a jerk to other golfers, to the fans and, more to the point, to his wife.
It’s not as “lopsided” as people think…. They have been paired together on 38 occasions, and Tiger has shot a lower round 19 times, while Phil 15 times and they have tied on four instances. Hence, this shows Tiger has had an upper hand in this head-to-head battle so far.
Rivalry’s are supposed to be balanced. This wasn’t a rivalry. It was the rest of the tour chasing Tiger. The real rivalry was literally Tiger Vs The field
Not only was it not a "rivalry" you have to remember that Tiger had all sorts of injuries and foolishly changed his swing several times. He lost anywhere from 6-8 majors and probably more than 18-10 wins because of all of that. Can you imagine Tiger's career if he had left his swing alone from the 2000 era which was the best swing in history and then never been hurt? Holy hell.
Great video but there was no rivalry. 15 to 6 sums it up without considering other wins, weeks at World No. 1, money list wins, career earnings, consecutive wins, Player of the Year awards etc. Mickelson never really dominated any season with or without Tiger being around. Also in regards to the longevity, if Tiger did not self inflict those car crash injuries, he probably would have won more too.
Tiger and Phil were not rivals when Tiger was in his prime. Tiger stomped the whole world for about 15 years, then he ran into personal problems and Phil got a few wins as a result.

Good video, but we have to acknowledge that Tiger missed a lot of Golf due to injury, yes caused by himself. But I would say he basically missed 5 years of his normal golf playing, and that probably stopped him from having at least 90 wins on the PGA and more Majors than Jack. We will never know, but to me, and it is just my opinion, Tiger is the GOAT. We all talk about the PGA, but Tiger is a 41-time European Tour winner as well and is third on the list for the Most Official European Tour wins behind Seve Ballesteros (50) and Bernhard Langer (42). Seve and Bernhard played more European tournaments as well. Tiger also has 3 Japan wins, 2 Asian PGA wins, 3 Australasia wins, plus 21 amateur wins.
It’s Tiger. Tiger was never and will never be touched. I knew he’d win another major and did and I believe he will again. He’s a machine and will always compete.
Was never really a rivalry... Also you forgot to mention Tigers body broke down from many multiple injuries.. The fact Tiger is alive and able to play is a miracle in and of itself...

If Payne Stewart hadn't died, we wouldn't even know who Phil Mickelson is. He got his spot by being the only other decently marketable person in the game at the time and that was largely only because he was left-handed. Who were the other choices? Hal Sutton, Stewart Cink, Robert Allenby, Justin Leonard... So many great, but also really boring players that just didn't have the capability to pull new people into the sport. So they pick the young lefty who makes a lot of really dumb decisions around the golf course and doesn't win much, but hey, he makes for good TV. I mean, how contrived is it when you try to build up one of the worst short putters in the history of the game as a "short game wizard"? Is putting not part of the short game?
Tiger never came from rags. LMAO. He grew up in a comfortable two parent household and never went without. Stop with the poor kid from the streets act. Both are great players that never really had much of a rivalry because Tiger dominated Phil in most tournaments.
Hmmm....it's a MASSIVE stretch to call this a rivalry. Never mind a "brutal" one. Tiger was lightyears ahead of Phil. Tiger's injuries and multiple surgeries are the only reason Phil could just about have his fingertips on Tiger's coattails.

Nah. the biggest rivalry in golf is greg norman and jack nicklaus. Don't think they ever really played against each other (jack was old and greg was young), but I can tell you Greg hates Jack. Can you guess why? 😊

Mickelson didn't win his first Major till 2004. By that time Tiger was so far ahead it wasn't even close. Also Phil could never win a US Open i remember in 99, 04 and 06 was his best chances. Came 2nd 6 times, he would of completed the career grandslam. So maybe in his later years aged 40-54 he was better than Tiger but not at the age 20-32, No way.

Phil winning the PGA Championship in 21 was big but its a fart compared to Tigers Masters 19 win. I know it was big that it made Phil the oldest major winner, but all players are playing well into later years now. When Tiger won in 19, nobody thought it ever could ever happen.

I'll never understand this argument, tiger's competition was strong, if tiger didn't take away 14 majors in a decade, there would have been many multi major winners in his time
