Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay construct and perform the perfect Classical Chaos for the first time!

Two references to carrots in here. First is the change of color to Layne’s horns ( orange in Mountain King/green here), and when Layne had the ‘solo’ lead the smoke of the fire was orange and green. Great reaction with lots of tidbits and new (to me) information about singing techniques. Thank you, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth, I love how you expand my knowledge and appreciation of music. For example -- THERE ARE NO DRUM KITS IN CLASSICAL MUSIC! And here's Layne, vocal percussionist, thinking to himself, "How can I pose myself this impossible problem? Right, I'll do a piece where I bring in ALL THE CLASSICS." And killed it. Loved the piece and your wonderful analysis of it. Thanks for sharing your intelligent appraisals. Cheers

I'm not sure, but there should be a grammy category for it!

@Badger77722 3 месяца назад
I've wondered since I heard that the Grammies changed the name of the category from "Best Arrangement, Instrumental" to "Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella" for Pentatonix and the Daft Punk medley, why don't they have all of the "normal" categories for a cappella songs/groups? They have categories for genres I've never even heard of, much less heard examples of, but there's virtually nothing for a cappella!
@philipmallonee5076

The Grammies - grammaphone - recording industry. Voiceplay works outside the recording industry and doesn't make them money. The industry doesn't want to reward and promote groups that do without them. Voiceplay does what they do in part because they are independent. Record companies would never bet on the stuff that voiceplay does.

What a fun piece! Sorry I missed the premiere. I would have loved to hear Geoff do the base pedals in Toccata in F Major (BWV 540), but alas, it is not so well known.

I sooo hope that you’re lucky enough to have never heard Jeff Buckley before. “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” live in Chicago will blow your mind. Even if you’ve heard it it’s worth a deep dive.

I'm very familiar with Jeff Buckley's work, and even did a full artist breakdown on my other channel The Singing Hole.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Ah I feared his general musical genius and especially his voice were simply too iconic for you to not already know him. A first hearing reaction to the song I mentioned would’ve automatically been my favorite video of yours because I know you would’ve been totally blown away but of course any passionate vocalist such as yourself must be familiar with his work. I still think a deep dive of any live version of that song is worthy of a deep dive. He never sings (or plays; as great of a singer as he was he was an absolute expert guitarist) a song the same way twice and I believe it’s one of the most perfect songs ever written. But I’m so glad to hear that you’ve made a video about him and I’m watching it right now! Cheers Elizabeth, You’re my favorite content creator on RU-vid even if I can’t have the privilege to see you witness Buckley for the first time. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re the best!

@@TheCharismaticVoice Even besides technical ability, I never knew it was possible to dig that deep into the pain of lost love lyrically as he did in “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” As you can tell I’m simply obsessed with his music and especially that song.

A Night On Bald Mountain is also in Fantasia. It used in contrast to Ave Maria when Chernabog awakens....

And Elizabeth is correct that it also does make a brief appearance in Fantasmic!, the stage show in the Disney parks, as the villains all work together to trap Mickey in the magic mirror.

AaaaAAAA yes yes yes!!! I've been watching the Voiceplay video obsessively the last few days since it posted, and I've been so eagerly awaiting this video!! I just knew it was going to be a deep dive into Rachel Potter's vocals; she does some absolutely amazing things here! As for what you're referring to as a "digitized run," from a production standpoint, what I'm hearing is an entirely natural run with a progressive heavy spatial element being phased in overtop of it. All the original notes are absolutely there and audible underneath, just with a lot more breadth stacking onto it that's generating a harmonic! No idea if I'm even close to correct, just what I'm hearing. Absolutely beautiful production work no matter what!

The ONLY gripe I have about this is that I’d love to see them do full-length versions of nearly all these pieces-especially Thus Spake Zarathustra and A Night On Bald Mountain. But isn’t it wonderful? I was initially a bit confused by the characters, but once I’d watched it a few times I think I got a storyline figured out. The book cautions that this conjuring music isn’t for beginners-and the guys are all beginners. Rachel might be their teacher-she knows what she’s doing, and they’re swiping the book back and forth and just going nuts and she’s trying to keep a lid on it. When they get to the Can Can, you see magical fireworks shooting off in all directions and she gets a bit frantic, snatches the book back, and does her bit, and you see the magic all get sucked back into the fire. And after they mess around a bit more and she gets fed up, she does the last page and sends them back whence they came. Anyway, I’m so glad you jumped right on this-your reactions to these pieces are always so fun!

Subtext is key to understanding the classics, thank you! That's what I always try to explain to new listeners or when trying to expose my friends to my nerdy world of classical and classical crossover. I've also been attempting genre cross training as I've aged and it is challenging! I needed this geek out, thanks so much Elizabeth!

If you noticed, the color of the smoke coincided with who had the book and was 'casting'. At one point, Eli was going nuts casting fireworks and Rachel reclaimed the book. When QoFyReacts thought he noticed a shift from major to minor, it coincided to when Rachel started 'uncasting' Eli's spell and his green smoke was collapsing back into the fire. Thank you for another awesome reaction & analysis...was waiting for this one!!

If you pay attention, Cesar first stole Geoff's voice, and then he stole Rachel's voice. They are the ones singing, and he's lip-syncing. That's why he "sounded like he had helium." The part you were debating on if it was in Fantasia and/or Fantasmic is the same scene played in both shows. Fantasmic is replaying the scene from Fantasia.

I'm pretty sure that when Cesar "steals" the voices, the deep voice is Layne, and the higher part is Rachel. This is shaping up to be quite the epic trilogy. Maybe they can include Ashley Diane in part 3? Heck, do an "episode" with each of their usual guests. I'm ready for the Voiceplay Grundle Cinematic Universe (VPGCU). 😂

I think Ashley Diane does a similar descending run in "We Don't Talk About Bruno." Crazy vocal agility on both of these two women.
