The MOST comfortable Engineer Boot..The Red Wing 2990 in Black Harness Leather 

Great video! I have these and the 2991 in Amber Harness I believe and you are right , there was absolutely no break in at all. I bought a unknown brand pair of engineers back in the 80s that I wore for about 10 years and they created such a lump on the top of my right foot that it still lets me know to this day that it’s never going away. I never could get them to break in as a kid. The older I got I just couldn’t take them anymore so I got rid of them. I was a bit worried when I first bought these thinking they might create another nightmare for my feet but I was wrong. I’m glad I took the chance because these are some of the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned.

When you said the engineer you slept on 1:35 I was first thinking that was just another break-in technique

I wear the 10877 when I ride. But I might look into those they look comfortable. Keep up the good work love my Red wings.

Just picked up my first engineers old stock 04/14 968's for 14 dollars and tax so needless to say I was beyond stoked I almost stroked out when the guy told me the price sad that there was only 1 set but for 14$ and tax today was a pretty awesome day

Nice Boots! I own two pairs of the 2990’s I was fortunate enough to find my first pair at my local Red Wing store in my size and my second pair I found on e bay from a shoe seller brand new still in the box for half the price that my first pair cost me. I’ve worn engineers for the biggest part of my life and I’m 49. All of the engineers I’ve owned in the past have had the stacked heel which looks good but I like the lower heel of the 2990 a hell of a lot better especially at my age having knee and back issues. I love these boots because of the comfort and with the lower heel they kind of have a Mad Max look to them which I love. It sucks that these are discontinued and so hard to find especially in the U.S. as these are my go to boots now days. If I wear both pairs out I would take my old ones to a boot maker and have them make me a pair just like them and gladly pay the money!

I always use multiple coats over time of neetsfoot oil to condition new to me leather boots, I also speed up the break in by wearing the boots and applying neetsfoot oil while using a hair dryer to heat them. I don't ever use water, treat your boots like you would a good saddle and water has no place soaking a saddle. After the boots are properly oiled then mink oil and or your polish of choice (I like cremes) and the boots are good to go.

hard to find a nice video showing Red Wing engineer boots so thank you dude for making them. Trying to find a pair of engineers for motorcycle riding but its hard to find the exact style I want them in; wish Red Wing still made them.

I’ve been conditioning all my RW’s fresh out of the box, especially if they were made more than a year before I purchased. Those engineers are sexy as hell. I love the low stack heel/sole.

I like those boots. I had a pair of Red Wing pull-ons that I wore for a couple years waiting for them to break in but they never did. I didn't think about using water. I was working behind a desk at that time and my previous Red Wings I wore outside so there were plenty of times those got wet. But I never connected that to helping them break in. Now I wish I had used water for my pull-ons. They were extremely painful and it was nothing but will power waiting for that broke in comfort that never showed up. I like the profile of those.

I just tracked down (from a source in Japan) the Red Wing 8123, the Ironsmith...in the burnt orange Muleskinner. Nitrile Cork sole, and cap toed...awesome!

I feel that Iron Rangers and Moc Toes for me the same. Maybe I’m weird lol.

Looking into these now that Chippewa discontinued their engineer boots, for some fuckin' reason. Lol

Found these new in a thrift store, along with Danners, whites Hawthorne explore, thorogoods and some Redwing Irish setters also some Redwing loggers. Also picked up a lot of vintage picket knives. What a goldmine. No lie believe it or not also found 5 different woolrich jackets new condition freaking awesome.

I used to have a pair of 970’s engineers with vibram lug sole. I wore them down to the thread and threw them away, that was stupid I didn’t know that they could be resoled and resoled for ever. I bought a pair of steel toe engineers, they where measured a size to small by the Red Wing store, they would be fitting great after breaking in they said but they never did. I thought it would be plausible because they were the same size as my old 970’s which I had to wear them with thicker socks so I thought the new engineers were going to fit like a glove. Now they’re collecting dust...., I’m going to try the soaking in warm water method..., if that doesn’t work I sell them 🥴

Nice review as always CJ! I'd love a pair of these in amber harness but as you said, they're quite hard to come by. Living in the Netherlands we do have these in amsterdam but they're out of my size :(

How does the 2990 distress over time ? The 9268 create beautiful patina because of the tea core but I don’t know if the 2990 would look good at all when worn a lot

I looked for the boots but could only find them in small sizes. Unfortunately, I am a size 12 and there is no such thing. For the past 5 years, I've been looking for them. Where did you come upon them?

When you say you soak in water, how much of the boot are you placing in water? The entire boot or just the lower part?

CJ do these Engineer boots (or any of them) run true to size? I have heard that Red Wing, in general, run a size to a size and a half big.
