You can't PLAN how you will defend yourself. Real self defence can't be planned for the moment. This week we discuss why you can't train specific martial arts techniques for self defence. You can only adopt strategies for how to fight.
Self Defence or Martial Arts Training: Which is best to learn to defend yourself? Simple question, but there is a big difference between training a martial art and learning to defend yourself. This week we discuss the differences and what you should look for if you wish to learn to defend yourself.
Most martial arts fail in street fights or self defence because people train for the wrong fight. This week we look at what self defence means and why martial arts may not always help you focus in the right way.
As always please feel free to leave your comments and advice for others to follow. Remember the TOPIC of discussion is how to defend yourself in a fight.

That's why hard sparring is a must. It prepares you for real fights.

@@PaulWhitcomb-ty6md Bro what? Sparring hard against an opponent who's willing to hurt you and throw you down no matter the cost is the best training you can have. You don't know what you're talking about 😐...
@ToledoPitbull
@ToledoPitbull 8 месяцев назад
@PaulWhitcomb-ty6md Martial arts is self-defense and train for scenarios like this. So with hard sparring you prepare yourself to eat some punches and control that instant rush of adrenaline that happens the moment a fight or self defense situation occurs so that you don't make a wrong decision and get yourself killed by making a bad decision in a real life situation. Hard sparring will help you enter the fight with more control over your emotions, which helps you to fight with a clearer mind, so YES! Hard sparring is 💯% essential to prepare for an encounter on the streets regardless if it's a sneak attack or not.
@raydrexler5868

We do a lot of multiple attacker scenarios, often one at a time randomly as well. The chaos that ensues is a fair analog of a street fight. It’s dangerous tho, so be sure of your skills and those of your partners and take care of each other.

Being calm under pressure/threat is the key initially. I once unknowingly walked into the middle of an armed robbery in a store. I walked in the front door, saw the robbery, turned to my left and one of the gunmen had a 44 magnum aimed at me point blank range. I just stared at him and told him the police were coming. ten seconds later another gunman shot at one of the employees who freaked out. I was not shot at because I was calm. People just don't scare me. LOL

Situational awareness or presense of mind, quick physical reactions or reflexes, mental strength or toughness, composure or self-confidence, resourcefulness, the instinct or the will to fight back and defend yourself, knowing when to fight back or when to just run away as fast as you can, avoiding people places and situations that have a high chance of leading to heated altercations or violent encounters, and your martial arts/fighting/self-defense skills and techniques (if you have any or some) which you have spent long periods of time practicing and training, can drastically increase your chances of successfully defending yourself and surviving potentially violent self-defense encounters. Speaking based on my personal experience as an amateur MMA and self-defense/self-protection practitioner.

Through my life, I got into a couple of street fights, in one I faced multiple opponents and the other was a surprise attack. The biggest thing I got from training was the ability to take a hit and stay cool. After the attackers saw that I was still standing and calmly ready for whatever came next, they stopped the attack with a surprised look on their face, no longer so sure that they were going to avoid damage themselves I guess. In both cases I was able to make a plan and escape the situation without further violence.

I had a plan once that if a guy came at me I would kick him in the groin. It happened and I kicked him in the groin. Although he made a audible gasp sound of pain, he still continued to come at me, I repeated his prescribed dose of bollocks kicking and landing another. Fortunately this finished him. I asked him if he wanted to die and he left. My plan worked, but yeah plans do fail and having strategies is much better as Mark says.

Trying to remember techniques in a street fight is not practical and will slow down your timing. Bruce Lee is famous for "Be like water" quote, but he also said "Take things as they are. Punch when you have to punch. Kick when you have to kick." If you are forced to defend yourself, no two situations will be the same. You should be trained to adapt to the circumstances and react accordingly without "thinking" about what to do next.

strategy, training, how come nobody ever talks about instinctive reaction other than flight or fight? i been jumped from behind and come out on top, i been faced with very un-equal odds and come out on top, i have no idea how or why but blackout fighting is what i have always been best at, not drunken blackout but i get punched in the back of the head and a few seconds later the guy is out cold and i have no idea how or why but my friend is standing there with my shirt in his hand because he tried to pull me off the guy but it wasn't working, or the guy comes at me grabs my arm and tells me i'm about to get hurt and i yank my arm out of his hand and then he's on the ground and the guy walking by with his girl says to me nice moves but i have absolutely no idea what i did and the guy was twice my size? the sucker punch thing has happened more than once and the arm grab only happened once, i wish it could have been recorded so i could know what i did

Lol, my oldest sisters husband says the same… when he blacks out the psychopath comes and a monster is out… I’ve really only heard this coming from untrained people. One thing I realised when starting was that the manly fantasy about a crazy fight where one would go “berserk” and do that and that to the other person, wouldn’t happen cause one doesn’t even know how to really react or what to do lol. One was humbled from the “I could beat him and do that cause X and Y”

False and a misnomer. Lack of fear is a hindrance. Fear creates a powerful chemical response in the brain and body that heightens our senses, reflexes, increases adrenaline. The problem is most people use it to flee when engagement might in fact increase their survival odds. CONTROL of fear is what you want, not lack of fear. Lack of fear means you are most likely clinically insane and lacking a valuable biological enhancement you can't access without (fear response). Learning to control fear when it activates makes you deadly - your sesnes are sharper and reflexes are faster. You can train your fear response, it can be developed just like a skill. Most people (including fighters) don't. The best fighters and warriors are not those who lack fear, but those who have learned either through real life experience or lots of training, to control it.

I watch videos about stuff like this for almost a year and try to practice what I've seen when I feel it -- thinking that when I happened to find myself in a fight i can use it. Hahahahaha, honestly and sadly your words is absolute "Everyone has their plan until they got hit in the face", hahahahaha. But when i suddenly caught in a fight I literally forgot getting the distance and every moves I have in mind after getting hit in my neck, I goes in a full berserk mode like my opponent. However, I'm quite glad that from all of those martial arts video I've watched I utilized one --elbow strike! The tomahawk and cross elbow that makes my enemy helplessly do nothing but to cover his head with his hands until we've got stopped

Depends who you're asking. If you Google "difference between Plan and Strategy" you'll see many pages talking about how those things are not the same. A Strategy has no set Tactics while a Plan usually DOES have set Tactics which means that if one of those goes wrong, you might have screwed everything up.
