It seems like no matter which "dangerous" neighborhood you visit, no matter the country or region, you are sure to find majority of black folk there. This truly breaks my heart. Us black people have to change the way we live and stop making our neighborhoods hell-holes to live in.

Hey, I've worked in La Goutte d'Or and La Chapelle for quite a few years, and I'd like to say a few words about this neighborhood. I'm not going to lie and say that I've never seen someone highly drugged in this area, that a pickpocket has never discreetly opened the back pocket of my backpack, that I've never seen two guys fighting, that I've never seen a dealer, etc. But I have to say that's about it. I grew up in the neighboring district, the 19th, which is also a rather poor neighborhood, so maybe I have less perspective, but I never really felt in danger in this area, even at night. And I'm saying this as someone who's not a muscular giant with a dog, just a random guy with glasses. And what I'd like to add is that beyond the misery and poverty that exist here, there's also a lot of solidarity. It's a very lively neighborhood, with a lot of associations that keep it active with concerts, sports events, food distributions. It's also a very politicized area. I worked in one of these associations, and I quickly learned that people here are kind-hearted. How many times, while transporting materials on a dolly, did I drop everything on a broken sidewalk and passersby immediately came to help me pick it all up? How many times, on difficult and rainy days, did local shopkeepers offer me tea or coffee? That doesn't happen in the rich and touristy neighborhoods of Paris. I worked next to a retirement home, and how many times did I see those guys in hoodies, who seem suspicious at first glance, spontaneously help an old lady cross the street? And by working with the residents of these neighborhoods, I also discovered a population with a lot of heart. Yes, it's a tough neighborhood, it's not beautiful, there are a lot of homeless people, sometimes you see needles on the ground, and I kept an eye on my backpack when taking the metro. But there's also this other reality that you learn to see when living in this area. To me, the people here are much more human than the coldness of the posh neighborhoods of Paris. So I wouldn't recommend tourists to go there, because it wouldn't be very interesting anyway, it's not particularly beautiful, and I think they wouldn't feel comfortable, just like you. But I wouldn't qualify this neighborhood as dangerous either. It's a poor neighborhood, it's not the image one has of Paris, but in the end, you can feel at home here with time.
@LasIsLike
@LasIsLike Месяц назад
Thanks for your comment. I do not disagree with you at all. It is in these kinds of neighborhoods where you can usually still find communities, something that has long dissapeared in other parts of town, so I get your perspective. But for outsiders its usually a different story. In any case, everything is relative. Peace.

And I would also tell you are probably a racised non white man. An opulent white man (or asian man) that go his way at night is in danger.

I lived at Marx Dormoy and I totally agree with you. I have spend much time in this whole area. Despite it's not the most beautiful, poverty van be quite visible and people can be shady and a bit ghetto. But I experienced also a lot of friendly people from different cultures, yes coming to my aid multiple times even giving me a free metro ticket and I enjoyed the local African shops and restaurants. Streets can be very lively filled with different cultures dressed in traditional cloths, people hang out on the street at night. I loved it, like a little piece of Africa

I uaed to live in Paris . Paris in the 90s wasn't perfect, but it still felt French. Paris in 1999 and Paris iafter 2000 was night and day. In 2005, I was attacked by 2 'teenagers' trying to steal my camcorder. It was close call. I escaped, but it was terrible. Paris used to be beautiful. Now it is a ghetto, a slum. Europe and North America have become 3rd world slums. And every day it gets worse. The media pretends that it is like 1955, bit everyone knows the violent reality

There are no no-go zones in Paris, it's a fairly safe city all over if you don't look for trouble. Some parts of the suburbs are very sketchy but none compare with the north american hoods for the good reason that people usually don't pack. And those sketchy parts of the suburbs you wouldn't go to anyway cause they're sad as hell, and there's absolutely nothing to do or see there.

You visited the places in the morning and on a holiday, so there were only a few people there. If you had done the same thing on a weekday and in the afternoon, it would have been crowded. The area of porte de la Chapelle (not the place, but "porte") in the afternoon and evening is tense, drug activities, begging for money, prostitution. What the guy in the little park said to you ("cigarettes") - the cops were probably looking for counterfeit cigarettes. They are sold at the entrance/exit of the metro stations Barbès, Stalingrad and La Chapelle for half the price of the official cigarettes. (Fake Malborough for 5 euros for example). The sellers have only some packs of cigarettes in their pockets and hide the most of their merchandise somewhere else (for example in the park), so if they get checked by cops they tell it's their personal cigarettes and they don't sell. Thank you for the video. It's always interesting to see the perspective of somebody who comes from another country.

Not saying it's glamorous but this does not show anything tremendously terrible. Many of the comments seem just racist/xenophobic. I understand the feeling of wanting to preserve a city's and country's identity but you can't be a world class city and not embrace the outside world. who ever said that looks like Detroit or Baltimore has never been to either. And we'll just what are you saying anyway. how about we come up with solutions for worldwide poverty instead of judging from the illusion of the ivory tower.

There are two main camps here: ppl who insist that these places are absolutely fine and assume that I have some kind of agenda and then u got the other side that think this is hell on earth and is a sure sign that europe is finished. I never meant to ignite either of those feelings, i simply filmed what i saw in a city that I love, to show smthg other than the tourist areas. Paris is much, much more than these neighborhoods

As someone who has lived in Paris for 15 years and owns 2 properties in Chatou Rouge and I live in Montmartre this video is insanely ridiculous. First, you don’t speak french yet you are assessing an area. Two, to say the area looks like Africa not France is funny since the people of Senegal and Mali have lived in ‘little Africa’ for 70 years. Third, Montmartre has some of the most expensive properties in Paris and is one of the most visited places in the world. Lastly, all cities have poverty, instead of making horrible videos criticising poor people and calling them crackheads learn the language and talk with locals.
@LasIsLike

Are you retarded? 1. I dont need to speak French to see with my eyes 2. It looks like Africa when everyone is African 3. I never said that paris is a bad city nor did i even make any general comment on these areas other than what i see 4. A crackhead is a crackhead whether you like it or not 5. I love Paris and I go there at least 3 times a year for the past 10 years 6. You are a moron that is reading things into this video that are not there, only in your empty head

Rubbish. I've lived here in Paris for 4 years, and have never had a problem. Sure, if you go to the slum districts in any city, it is not safe. To say Galleries LaFayette is closed, it must have been early morning, because it is a thriving store. Paris is lovely.

So you went to an area that is notoriously dangerous, you don’t speak the language or know the customs (you walked in and out of an establishment without first acknowledging the workers), and you started filming BEFORE you asked if it was ok? That’s a recipe for disaster, my friend.
