The Oregon Inlet in the Outer Banks of North Carolina is notorious for the problems it presents to boaters every years because of its changing shoals, skinny channels, and ever-evolving landscape.
In this video, you'll literally be guided through the Oregon Inlet, all the way past Wanchese NC, and see the many turns, shoals, and danger areas to be aware of.
If you're thinking about coming in the Oregon Inlet the first time, this is definitely a video you'll want to watch.

Oregon inlet gets all of the coverage, but there are two other inlets along the OBX (Hatteras and Ocracoke) that are equally as dangerous!

At 2:46 In the background, on the beach.... a lone building stands in the sand. The old Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station (Pea Island). I was stationed there in 1985 🙂.... many crazy days running cases in the inlet. Back then the channel was more like a dog leg pattern.

Stationed at Hatteras and Ocracoke 1986-1990. If the swell is out of the SE - Go to Oregon inlet, if it's out of the NE go to Hatteras or Ocracoke.

Good video, Roanoke Sound does not start until you get up by Wanchese before that is the Pamlico, the Crack transitions to Walter Slough where it is marked backwards, you have to watch the turn at the 55 as the bar it marks protrudes out, there is a danger shoal marker there now, running up North before Wanchese the high sided island you mention is used for dredging

Red right return is a good rule of thumb, but the most important one is to always stay between the red and green.

All I keep thinking about watching this is how rough and dangerous it would’ve been for the Lost Colonists to come through the sound - and I don’t think Oregon Inlet was even open then. I think it was opened years later via a hurricane . Did they not have to enter the sound near Ocracoke in 1585? Wow

In 1585 there was another inlet that flowed where Nags Head is now known as Roanoke Inlet. It must have been deeper and less treacherous than Oregon Inlet if they were able to sail square rigged sailing vessels through it. Also there was an inlet where Carova beach is now known as Currituck inlet that was navigable for sailing vessels centuries ago. Currituck Inlet actually played a fairly important role in early United States maritime trade. As late as 1786, records indicate that some 240 ships docked at the Port of Currituck now known as Moyock. By 1819 the inlet had shoaled so badly that the U.S. Congress voted to eliminate funding for the Customs House at the Port of Currituck and a decade later the inlet had completely closed as had all of the other inlets of the Northern Outer banks. Oregon and Hatteras inlets both opened during the same Hurricane in 1846. After they opened all of the inlets of the Northern outer banks closed. The only inlet that has been permanent since antiquity is Ocracoke inlet which follows the path of a paleo river channel left over from the last Ice Age when sea levels were much lower, the Currituck, Albemarle and Pamlico sounds were dry land and the area that is now the outer banks was an upland miles from the coast. Past Present and Future Inlets of the Outer Banks Barrier Islands, North Carolina by the ECU geology department is a good read on the subject.

Fascinating thank you for the share. This non waterman here had no idea what these captains go through when they go out and back. I hope Rep. Murphy has this video. Any updates on the jetty happening?

The most dangerous inlet in the world’s location changes by the second, true mariners understand this statement.

yes there is a 100 miles stretch there that is the most dangerous in the western atlantic maybe but any bar crossing in Oregon or Washington or BC is in a category of its own - plain and simple ...way way more ocean energy. there is not comparison
