I'm a vegan for medical reasons, my body has issues breaking down meat protein, I'll get a bad stomach ache and end up vomiting up everything I ate. Eggs have meat protein in it, so if I ate one of those donuts I'd be sick for the day and have no clue as to why. Sure, it wouldn't kill me but it would still make me very sick. It's people that do stuff like this that makes me wary of ever eating anything that wasn't made by myself or my family members/close friends, because even vegan places can lie about what they use. It's dangerous!

I got that exact pink sprinkled D donut multiple times at our local dunkin. It was 100% their donuts along with all of her others! To charge 60+ dollars for a dozen Dunkin’ Donuts is INSANE 😂 and to put lives at risk. So many scammers today!

As someone with tons of food allergies (thankfully it doesn’t get me to the ER but it sure makes me stay in bed for a whole day with indigestion), this is horrible. I eat mostly home but sometimes we want to treat ourselves to something a little different and it’s a joy when I find something I can actually have. So I can only imagine if I have those and spend a whole day sick because of it. For me it’s not a choice.

I’m not vegan, but vegans deserve to have their convictions respected and not be unknowingly served animal products. And I’m not gluten-sensitive or celiac, but THEY deserve to not unknowingly be served something that could INJURE OR SICKEN THEM. I can’t imagine what was going through this woman’s head.

Tbh some people with severe celiac can die from eating gluten. It isn’t always a preference or choice. My mom can’t have gluten and for sure ended up at the drs all the time before she was diagnosed.

I have celiac disease and this is honestly a nightmare. The amount of pain one has to deal with for MONTHS after being glutened is indescribable. For me, it feels like being stabbed in your intestine with a rusty, dull knife, and then that knife is being wedged back and forth. And the worst thing is that there is nothing you can do but endure it until your intestine heals. There is a reason for glutenfree products being sold with a special label. This is dangerous and I hope there will be legal repercussions for this business.

These are HUGE grounds for a lawsuit. Misrepresenting food is SO dangerous (not to mention, an arguement could be made that the dumb donut lady committed fraud for charging vegan prices for non-vegan food or non-gluten prices when there's clearly gluten in the donut). Let's say someone's been stealing your lunch out of the fridge at work. So you decided to lace your food with something.. laxatives, Carolina Reapers, or even something that's just foul tasting. Even though it's your lunch and you gave no one permission to eat it, if your intent was to cause pain/harm through the food, you could be the one going to jail and even possibly sued by the lunch thief. Especially if they have a super adverse reaction after eating the stolen food. I genuinely hope they press charges.

reading these comments helped me realize how serious and painful celiac disease is. im a biology student and I got curious so I did some brief research on how it works- and WOW oh my gosh I can't imagine eating something that literally causes the cells in your intestines to get damaged/destroyed like that. you literally can't do anything but wait for tissue to be healed or regenerated. that makes me understand how disgusting it is for a business to do this. it's crazy to me that the food stand focused so much on the vegan aspect in the ig post but failed to really discuss the gluten free aspect of this. most people are vegan by choice whereas the vast majority of gluten free people HAVE to be gf. as you said, imagine someone with celiac or even an actual gluten allergy ate those donuts. assuming they were all in the same box, they are all contaminated now and can't be served. imo that should have been highlighted way more. anyway, regardless this is absolutely vile. as you said, don't mess with people's food. that can literallybe the difference between life and death for some people.

They have notified the appropriate regulatory bodies and they said they opened an investigation. It might be too late if she has just decided to bale on her business. Not only is it deeply unethical but potentially illegal to knowingly supply food to people that is mislabelled because the risks are so high, it is essentially poisonjng someone who may have a lethal allergy. And you have to ask if she has done this once or twice...or is it a regular occurance. I really wish Cindy & John had tested at least one other of the donuts too, i am glad they have frozen them so they can still be investigated later.

the crazy part is if she just admitted to it being some kind of mistake, like fam getting DD and there being some kind of mix up, this could've been avoided. her response seemed like she was too prideful to admit if there was a mistake. or maybe she buys DD to copy and a donut got mixed in with her batch? this could have just been a DM and nothing more

Although being vegan is generally a lifestyle choice, it can come about as a result of allergies. Growing up, I was allergic to both eggs and dairy, so we adopted a more or less vegan lifestyle because it was just easier to find and buy vegan things than allergy friendly things. These people are legitimately putting peoples lives in danger, and it’s horrific to do that on purpose, and then try to lie about it (lying badly about it to boot).

Let's talk about that price for a moment! 🤨 $60?! I currently work at Dunkin donuts and even after the prices went up, it's not that high. Granted it's still pretty expensive (about $15.56 for a dozen) and I wouldn't even pay that!

I have celiac disease and a restaurant that claimed to have a gluten free menu, apparently didn’t follow through either, because after I had just French fries, my whole body went numb on top of excruciating headaches and stomach pain. (This last for days) it’s very frustrating when companies don’t follow through. Also people with celiac, when you get “glutened” it takes your intestines 6 months to heal. It’s very serious.

Thanks for covering this. One of my friends has Celiac disease, and she has to be hospitalized, Ive seen her randomly pass out, even from a small trace amount of gluten. Her hair falls out.. and it's really, really scary and sad to see, but I can't imagine what she has to deal with on a daily basis. Other than that, she is lively and energetic, but she has to be so extremely careful about her food. I'm a vegan for 17 years and vegetarian for 22. It's insane how someone would just try to capitalize and be so lazy about someone else's health. Clearly, they don't know the ramifications or don't care.

This would of sent my aunt to the hospital or possibly even worse! She's extreme ciliac and has had to go to emergency due to cross-contamination. It's one thing to lie about being vegan. But to lie about an allergen?! That's insane!

I have someone that is a regular customer that orders vegan items from me consistently. If im doing an order for her, i deep clean all my equipment and i make sure i dont have other normal orders for the day. Allergies are not to be played with, its just the lying that gets me

I’m not celiac but my 12 year old cousin is. She is so thorough with making sure things are gluten free because she can end up in the hospital if not. If someone lied to her about a donut being gluten free, I would see red. Celiac isn’t just “oh I avoid gluten because it upsets my stomach” it is genuinely dangerous for someone with celiac to eat gluten. This could kill someone and they should be held accountable for lying.

When I tell you that I started tracking the data of how often I'd get onion in my food after telling the workers I'm allergic over a peroid of six months, and the numbers returned a 73% onion on my fucking plate result, I am not joking. My grandpa was diagnosed with celiac disease in 02 - back in the day when he asked for a “gluten free menu”, restaurant staff asked if he was needing a German menu 😂 Anywho, I’d lose my ever loving sh*t if somebody did this to him. That’s guaranteeing at the very least a long term date with the toilet, at the worst for some is honestly death (and slightly less worse is a hospital stay). This makes me so angry. It isn't the first time that someone has done something like this. I remember a man selling loaves of "gluten free" bread at a farmers market every week and it was just regular bread. I have celiac disease. A regular donut would make me vomit within 20 minutes of eating it and cause severe stomach pain for days to follow. I also have a pretty long list of food allergies and am very careful not to consume those items. My sons have a friend with a severe egg allergy and another that can't have gluten. At every party, I let them know what is and is not safe to eat. I would be livid if I ever served a guest something that might hurt them, thinking that it was safe.

I will say - Dunkin to my knowledge doesn't have frosted cake doughnuts, their frosted doughnuts are yeast- the Savory Fig one was cake, not yeast. My theory is, she found the sprinkles somewhere a while ago (and had them in her baking collection) from when Dunkin had them or after Dunkin discontinued them - and they were Dunkin brand sprinkles - aka not vegan,GF, allergy friendly etc. and she didn't want to cop to that. I live in New England the Dunkin mecca and I haven't seen the little D sprinkles in years. I guess we will never know for sure!

Sellers just don’t care. Many owners find it insanely funny to give anaphylactic customers stuff they’re allergic to. I worked at Miss Viet in Cheltenham, Victoria in Australia & the owner found it funny to give customers products they specifically requested to be exempt. The pho soup has beef. Chilli oil has shellfish. Dumplings have pork. Cocktails have egg. They find it funny & literally don’t care unless it impacts themselves negatively.

i have a severe dairy allergy that came back after years of being gone. it's severe, as in, i will start shitting blood and my digestive system will completely shut down and implode if i eat dairy (figured that out the hard way). i went completely vegan recently, after years of vegetarianism and only occasional dairy consumption, because of this (and ethical reasons). to think that if i went to get a vegan donut from this place i'd most likely end up in severe condition due to that person's greed is absolutely terrifying. it makes me doubt the vegan businesses around, which really sucks, since supporting small businesses is important to me.

There are deadly reasons it is super illegal to lie about the ingredients in food. I can appreciate the choice to live vegan, but lifestyle/ethics or no, there are vegans who are vegan out of medical necessity. Gluten free too, obviously. They may not have killed anyone, but they definitely wrecked someone’s day.

My 4 year old son is Celiac and this is why I don't give him anything that I didn't cook myself 😕 eating gluten not only causes days of stomach cramps and diarrhea but it also causes malabsorption of nutrients and osteoporosis.

This honestly sounds like a nightmare to me. Thankfully I'm not allergic to dairy or anything and I'm only gluten intolerant, not celiac, but if I'm paying that much for something that's supposed to be gluten and dairy free at the very least, I've gotten to a point where I've decided that the amount of pain I'd be putting myself in from eating the dairy or the normal gluten food isn't worth what I'd be getting out of it. But then to find out that I paid so much to avoid that, and then go through it Anyway for triple the price? That's fraud at best, and legitimately dangerous to the people she's selling to at worst. Trying to be just gluten free is already incredibly limiting, and most people who eat that way aren't doing so by choice, but there's a lot of vegans who eat that way because of dairy, egg, and various fish allergies as well, especially when it comes to pastries. People will ignore the food intolerances and allergies of family members, which is bad enough in my opinion, but to say you're accommodating people's dietary needs while knowing you aren't and still charging the rates you would if you were presumably to just make some extra cash is absolutely disgusting. You have no idea who you're hurting or how badly you're hurting them. It's sick and if she doesn't get shut down after this, I'll have negative hope for the future as a disabled person because this was blatant disregard for food safety regulations and basic human decency.

As someone who was GF/DF for years and who has family member with food allergies, including Celiac, I would be LIVID if someone tried to give one of my family members something with an allergen in it all while claiming it to be safe and knowing that it’s not. Cross contamination happens all the time, if it’s an accident…it depends on the allergy I guess. But, like, even if it’s not an allergy and it’s just a choice, or maybe some kind of religious thing, that’s disrespectful at best. I mean, I guess we can’t prove that it’s a Dunkin’ Donut, but the test said it wasn’t Gluten Free, and I feel like the owner would be publicly defending themselves more if all of this was fake or staged as opposed to shutting down their Instagram account.

my older sister and i both have celiac. she suffered longer than i did undiagnosed and it led to her having to get organs removed due to poor nutrition. us eating a donut with gluten in it means horrible fatigue and trouble functioning for a couple weeks to months until our body can heal and get back on track. during that time, our immune systems are weakened and we can get sick easier. it's no joke. to think that there are people in this world who would pray on the fact that we are willing to pay more to stay healthy makes me so sad.

I searched multiple variants of "Fake vegan gluten free donut bakery controversy scandal" This didn't come up until I found the name of the business, savory fig and added that to the search terms then scrolled a bit.
