The Most Effective Sweep in Jiu Jitsu

This video I overview the sit up guard system. In my opinion the sit up guard is by far the most effective sweeping system in jiu jitsu. It works against people of all sizes, it is extremely easy to set up, and if it doesn't give the sweep it will often give a back take. I also include a lot of sparring narration in this video. Let me know if you are enjoying this format of video.

@jedsanford7879
@jedsanford7879 8 месяцев назад
One thing I noticed in sparring, if you lose the sleeve grip, you are fine as long as you have the leg because he WILL reach for you, and thats your chance to recapture the sleeve. Win that grip battle and you win the position and its not hard he will 99% go for the leg, 1% go for the collar. Then you have sleave again and can feed it over and finish.

Not sure if you have made a video about this topic, but I have a blackbelt at my school and he always keeps me off balance in his guard which opens me up for sweeps and subs. From the moment I'm in his guard I am fighting to keep my base. I would love to see a video from your perspective on this topic and I think other people would enjoy it as well. Thanks
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
Hey buddy, realistically the reason you are getting knocked out of balance is so relative to the grips that he has on you, it’s very hard to say what is causing it, there is no one position that you can put your body in that will solve the issue you need to learn how to respond to the different grips. If you want you can send me a video on IG of you sparring and I can break it down for you.

Honestly I don’t think the height plays much role at all in what position I play, it’s just the body positioning. I just rolled with a guy who was 6 foot 8 and my game played the exact same way. I would worry much more about my opponents body position than his body type.

@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
If you control the far sleeve when you sit up it is much much harder for them to do it, also if you keep your head and posture up high it’s also more difficult. Hope that helps.

@lockplay
@lockplay 2 года назад
How would you address this situation, JT: *can't grab opponent's far sleeve* 1. Opponent immediately grabs foot, cupping the heel (the one that is pushing opponent's leg out) and pulls upwards and takes a big step forward, closing the distance. Opponent's front quad is pressed up against the back of situp-guard-player's thigh/hamstring. 2. Opponent simultaneously knee cut's, outwards, with leg that is being DLR'd, and staples situp-guard-player's thigh down. 3. opponent's arms are now fighting for double underhooks, or one underhook and one head control, and clamps down. Asking b/c this is how I defend the situp guard (my fav, btw!) and would like to know how to defeat myself. Thank you and Love you and your videos, Professor JT!
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
Excellent question and details! So if I can’t grab the far sleeve I personally may not even go for sit up guard, I might threaten something else like bolo, since you are hiding the far sleeve it’s easier to threaten collar or belt grip for bolo. In your question I couldn’t tell if you were initiating that pass sequence once I had already sat up or when I am still down in dlr, let’s say I sat up from dlr, I put my foot really high on the hip almost under your groin somewhat at that angle it is significantly harder to pull the foot up as it is under your leg a bit rather on outside where it is easier to pull up. If you did pull it up I would immediately bail on single leg grip switch my right leg to knee shield and frame to create space and slide back then reset new grips. If you pull foot up and drive in when I still have the ankle grip then I would knee shield still but switch to the cross collar grip and try to slide back then transition to Bolo threats if that makes sense. It’s hard to explain via text sometimes. Hope that made some sense.
@lockplay
@lockplay 2 года назад
Thank you so much for all the awesome details! and my bad for not clarifying at what point in the hypothetical scenario as it is hard to explain in the third person. But you have answered all my concerns. Appreciate you, Professor JT!

How about if he kneels down but the far leg is posted up?
@ScolopaxJJ
@ScolopaxJJ 2 года назад
hey jon, why do you prefer foot on hip vs the foot above the knee?
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
The foot on hip being higher it is much harder for your opponent to push down as they must step back further to create the space to do it, which makes it easier to come up to the single leg. It’s also easier to push them out if their knee angle is inward, where if you push on thigh and their knee is facing inward it’s hard to push their leg back.

Let me just say, I love your videos, they've helped me develop my guard 'game' for a while. I just have one question.. what the fuck are those pants? Why do you wear capris when everyone else wears gi pants that somehow.. fit them like gi pants are supposed to?
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
Hey buddy the pants are beyond legal, it’s normal when you play guard that they ride up your legs especially if you have skinny legs like me. I’m not sure if you play guard a lot but if you watch a video when I’m standing they are easily at regulation length, it’s just when I lay on my back that they ride up.
@Aikidas
@Aikidas 2 года назад
Ryan Hall said you can replace 70-80% of open guard with just coming up on a single. Thoughts?
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
I think the single leg is a very powerful and easily accessible attack. I think there is many situations where you could simplify things a lot by just taking the single leg, but also against certain postures especially in gi, attacking upper body with Omoplata triangles and collar chokes is much easier, and in certain situations bolos and ankle locks are an easier choice. So maybe 70 to 80 percent is a bit high, but I do think that there is a lot of unnecessary extra sequences that could more easily be solved with a good single leg guard.
@coreyedward8335
@coreyedward8335 2 года назад
Only comment I would have is record in 60fps or even higher if possible. It will make your slow-mo breakdowns more clean and not as choppy/easier to see what is going on. I see you upload in 4k60 but something feels off when you slow down.
