Is that true? As a physicist, I must test this hypothesis. I will send her a cardboard paper towel tube with some ragged holes dug into it with a broken pencil. We will find out!
@@DrunkenUFOPilot A dear friend of mine who was something of a child prodigy on French horn used to take a spare mouth piece and play a length of coiled garden hose with a funnel on the end. He could make it sound divine! I don't know about paper towel roll, though... :D
Mone Moore thats because theres very little air escapage, therefore more air can go through her instrument rather than out the side of her mouthpiece, giving it a fuller sound!
Wow the gemeinhart sounds great for what it is!! But i cannot get over the stunning sound of that haynes!! it sounds so effortless...and honestly it better for 84k!!
Wow the Haynes sounds SO effortless to play. The Gemeinhart seemed like it was a bit difficult (although still gorgeous with your playing). But the Haynes...wow, it was like night and day.
The Haynes sent shivers down my spine 4 times when you played Carmen Fantasy. I guess if someone has a career of being a solo flutist this will be worth every penny to wow the audience!
Hands down, I mean fingers down a second mortgage for the $84,000. Quality obvious, is solid with more volume. It is a treasure with the gold. So beautiful! You will be heard, and noticed!!!
@@SolsGarage Pennsylvania. There are many houses available in that price range. My first was 20,000. Definitely a fixer uppat, but we were able to move in right away.
I can hear a massive difference in the amount of overtones the Haynes produces versus the Gemeinhardt. The lower register is so full-bodied and rich on the Haynes! I have a mid-line Selmer with a Goosman head joint myself, but I haven't played in a few years, either, so no need for an $84k flute!
The Haynes has a really warm sound, I guess that’s preferable? It also sounded like it was heavy to play. The gemeinhart sound lighter and freer to me. You sounded like you had to think about what you were doing on the Haynes. But, what do I know, I’m a horn player. 😎
I was surprised by how much the expensive flute made me feel compared to the cheaper one. It's definitely obvious that your skill has more effect on the sound of the flute but the expensive one was noticeably more expressive. It really made me think because I started off with a ~£400 Trevor James flute and got my >£1000 pearl flute as an intermediate player. I love that flute and still have and play it all the time but, as more of a casual player these days, I do sometimes feel the pressure of having a higher quality instrument because there's just so much more you can do with it. It's like drawing in a sketchbook vs painting on a canvas the size of a house. Just found your channel btw and I think it's awesome!
True story , back in the 80’s a friend of mine bought a secondhand flute in NY, for about $200, turned out it was platinum. It was stolen at a gig before he managed to insure it.
I love the tone in the platinum flute. I would like the other if it had open holes though. My first flute was closed holes and I never want to go back!
It was very apparent in the Carmen Fantasy. So that's what $84,000 sounds like :) (196* student Artley w/B foot). When I was a student in the '70's, Gemeinhart was drool worthy among my sister and her flutist friends. Since I didn't start playing it until late 70's, my used Artley was enough. Been thinking of an Amazon Yamaha, but now I see the Gemeinhart is same price from Flute Center. Great video and thanks for the hard work! Best Regards/Wishes!
When you played Mozart on the Haynes, I was knocked backwards a bit. That was stunning. The first new flute I bought on my own was a Gemeinhardt. It was an absolute gem and served me well. They are known for being sturdy. If I could afford it, there are some deserving but underserved music programs in my area.
great performances and great demonstrations. the Haynes flute sounds ridiculously good. it's like high definition television. you don't know what you're missing until you hear it. and then you can't live without it.
@@katieflute I would love to hear a powell signature with an aurumite headjoint, Haynes Q4 or Qfusion, Muramatsu DS, or anything similar. I would also love to hear a flute with/without the LefreQue
@@katieflute A $14K Brannen and Powell 9k Auromite would be interesting comparisons. $84K is obviously diminishing returns but hey, if it's your passion and you have the money...
I like the flute part in the song Magic Journeys which was the theme song from a 3D movie that used to be at EPCOT Imaginations Pavilion. The 3D movie was called Magic Journey. Back in the 80's.
We subscribed today! Me and my girlfriend started playing flute lately. We both bought a cheap flute from amazon. I have been playing instruments since I was a kid, mostly classical guitar.
@@1Flyingfist Actually, yes! After 2-3 months of heavy play. Our new flutes get lots of play time! Katie is still better! XD I would recommend people to invest in a quality flute. :)
My first flute was a Trevor James, from All Flutes Plus in Warren Street, London, which was great for learning on, and cost about £150 back in the '80s. My flute teacher recommended that I get an upgrade and I paid about £600 for a Boosey and Hawkes. The difference was remarkable, once I'd trained myself on it. Apparently the difference in tone gave me two music grades more. I was going for grade 7 but a divorce got in the way. Got grade 5 with merit and theory grade 5 distinction and was well on my way. Hey ho, things and life happen. After all this rambling, the point is that the inexpensive learner flutes are good for just that, but to get the tone and power, you have to shell out more money. Perhaps not as much as, £70,000 though. This video makes this case pretty well, and thanks for filming it, Katie.
I'm a brass player but am recently having to delve back into the beginner market since a lot of parents think I know everything about band(no, just trumpet and I know a fair amount). With local prices for instruments oriented for beginners starting at around $1200, I feel this is way too much for any beginner. Having good instruments around the price for that Gemeinhart, it now puts music into a more realistic price for kids to get started. Great video.
Beautiful playing Katie, love the sounds of both. The Gemeinhardt in the right hands is probably capable of doing most things. But as an amateur flautist, there is always that desire to want to get the next one up. The better one, and eventually one develops sense and stops when the collection has no place in the showcase cabinet. Love the channel. Love the playing, and the tone is superb. Even on the expensive one.
@@katieflute I got a bright blue Nuvo nearly 5 years ago just because I was intrigued. I have to admit I was surprised at how good it sounds. Of course I have to work quite a bit harder to get that good sound than on my 1970 Armstrong Heritage.... Anyway, it's a great casual, knock-around traveling flute and I have no fear of what might happen to it if I accidentally drop it in a creek or something.
I've been playing since I was 10 and I personally thought the Gemeinhart was more effortless in they way Katie played it. Since the Haynes was a bit heavier I thought she would have to focus on how she would control the number of breaths she took.
Georges Barrère had a Haynes platinum flute for which Varèse wrote his piece "Densité 21,5" which is the density of platinum in gm/cm^3. Apparently it was so heavy that he didn't play it much.
I just randomly found a couple of your videos. My sister used to play flute in middle school and high school and I loved hearing her play. I don't know much about them thoigh. The Haynes sounded really smooth and effortless and the Gemienhardt sounded kind of, I'm not sure how to describe it... Warm? I loved listening to you play. You are truly talented. 💕
I play the clarinet now. Have been playing since 6th and am about to be a senior. I want to learn flute and if I started at that gemeindhart, that wouldn't be so bad. I think I prefer open hole though since I am used to clarinet's open holes.
Quentin Williams that’s awesome! You should totally pick up the flute, it’s never too late :) The Gemeinhardt is a great flute 👌🏻 idk of any student flutes/flutes on the low end of the price spectrum that have open holes, but you could always upgrade down the line if you think you’d prefer the open holes :)
Video suggestion: How to get a clear sound on piccolo! I’ve been struggling transferring my flute chops to piccolo especially in the piccolos low range.
I've seen the Haynes platinum on FCNY's website and I saw the price which caught my eye on it, and I kinda wondered how it sounded. This flute is extremely beautiful. I got a Gemeinhardt 3B for an intermediate flute. I actually bought it new off of eBay (sounds bad I know) but it was a newer model that was made in China. My local brass and woodwind repair shop said that was the first Gemeinhardt flute that was made in China and has a beautiful sound to it because when some of his customers talked about it they did say that the quality of the instrument would go down. My father did pay $300-400 on it. Not bad, and yes Gemeinhardt did move their factories to China.
Hey, hi, hello and I could hear a difference in the sound of both flutes. The closed tone hole one sounded a stuffer than the open tone hole one did. (Fun fact bout me is that I play the flute to in my middle school band and I just finished my beginner year, thought I mention it bc y not :vv)
I’ve recently found your channel, and oh my goodness I love it!! I love the flute and am playing it in high school for concert band. I would really like to purchase one so videos like these are so helpful. Thank you for creating amazing content💖💖💖
Belleloves Gaming ahhh thank you so much for your support! 💖🙏🏻 Let me know which flute you pick if you get a new one! 😊 Best of luck in concert band! ✨
I was fortunate enough to play the first platinum flute . It was an experience. Not only is the weight notable, the amount of resistance when playing seemed really different.
Yeah - there were no flies on the Gemeinhart - it played great. What I noticed about the platinum flute was an increased level of overall sound power and sonority, but the tone quality got a bit brash, brassy and overblown at times. Of course, I don't know how heavy it was, or how difficult it was to hold up - I have to take your word on that.
Well I've just purchased the Gemeinhardt ,and I really love it.Easy to play ,nice sound.Of course the Haynes is ...the best flute money can buy ,and there is a big sound difference. But still ,Gemeinhardt's sound is good and satisfying.
I'm 48 years old and I did go to music college - I did not finish but I kept playing and eventually became a rock flutist - yes, really! But this video makes me happy, because I started in the 80s on a $300 nickel plated Gemignhardt and now I have a handmade 900 series Yamaha with a Prima Sankyo head joint - so seeing the flute levels reminds me of progressing through playing levels. That Haynes sounds big and open and like you're just sailing on it, but I have arthritis in my left shoulder from playing for 30 years, no way I could hold a platinum flute for hours! God, it's so gorgeous. Thanks for the videos!
Platinum requires a strong and open blowing style to really make it sing. Switching to a platinum head took a while but transformed my playing. Fun video!
I recently was exploring Miyazawa’s website and reading about their artists, it’s incredible how many players are actually on platinum flutes as their main instrument, and that was just Miyazawa. I am sure there are lots of Haynes and other makers of platinum flutes that have several artists on them.
Definitely worth the price if you got the money, or use for it. It would be better to make a video explaining the difference in sound according to the material the flute is made of. It's also interesting to demonstrate and explain in details what things influence on the sound of a flute, but that is a lot more difficult. Demonstrations with headjoints are also interesting.
I love your vidoes sooooo much im 12 and ive been practicing cecile chaminade concertino and ive been so inspired by your video of you playing it its such a beutiful song and you did such a great job
I am not a musician but definitely appreciate your talent and channel. As an electrical engineer I would do the engineering thing and compare both using a DAW and a spectrum analyser analysis. I do not not if that is you forte, but I would be interesting. Very interesting no matter what. Cheers from Canada.
I also play on a Platinum Wm. S. Haynes Flute , with a 14 K Rose Gold mechanism , B footjoint , offset G keys , C Sharp Trill Key , and it is completely hand engraved , so it is a far different Flute from my first instrument , which was a nickel-plated , closed hole , C footjoint BUNDY Flute !!! However , I still own and love my chilhood Flute , which I still occasionally play !!! The Haynes is just a little bit more fancy than my BUNDY Flute !!!! And , I just love to watch all your Flute videos , they are awesome !!!
Molly Peck OOOO this is a good question- definitely offset G, open holes, C # trill key is a MUST, and I would love to have a convertible B/C footjoint. What about you? ☺️
Would like to see a double tonguing video about how the tone and articulation change when you do different things like tongue near front of mouth vs back, blowing too hard, how the tonguing changes w the air in high vs low notes
hearing carmen on the gemeinhardt was surreal - i had the same model for years and played carmen on it and damn you made that thing rock it. i went back and played it now, (i have a powell signature) and i could definitely make it sound better than i could on the gemeinhardt, but you made the gemeinhardt sound better than i can on my powell! we STAN a tone quality LEGEND
I'm about to buy a very nice hand crafted Glory (a cheap internet "instrument-shaped object") in Amazon and was hunting down opinion videos on that. I don't have$400 to spend. But your video was too great to pass up and was funny (ASMR reference too) and actually I found the Platinum flute to sound incredible. I preferred it over the G. So I'm foregoing rent for the rest of my life and buying the Haynes all thanks to you no but for real great video.
I'm a violinist, and just learning to play a cheap beginner flute. I could definitely hear a difference in the two! The Haynes definitely has a richer tone, but they both sound great in your capable hands!
Is the more expensive one tuned lower or does it just have a fuller sound? Can’t really tell, also don’t know anything about flutes but would like to know 😁
What you need is a decent decibel meter perhaps mounted on the wall in back of you. I happen to have very good speakers so I could really hear the dynamic range difference but otherwise it would be hard
Much better tone quality on the Hanes, of course. I remember our high school woodwind instructor at Band Camp in 1973; she had a gold flute with a great tone quality.
I scrolled down into the comments and could immediately tell the difference in what flute you were playing. The tone to the more expensive one is so much nicer.
