Hi guys! When my wife and I were looking for a bigger house, out of curiosity I started looking at real estate prices in cities around the country. We were looking for a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house here in Texas. Now this before the Bay area became as expensive as this video shows. When I put in my search perimeters the cheapest one I found was $ 3,000,000. When I checked by price, I was looking for something in the $100,000 range all I found was a 2 bedroom dilapidated shack in what looked like a real bad neighborhood. We found a nice 4 bedroom 3 bath in a nice neighborhood for 100 grand and talked them down to 93,000. The house is 2600 square feet and the mortgage payment is only $799 a month.

A neighborhood isn't specific to the suburbs. It's in either a city or suburb. One official definition is: a district, especially one forming a community within a town or city. You can have a big or small yard, and that depends on the area. Some really expensive areas have small yards.

All along Hwy 280 from Cupertino to San Francisco homes are EXPENSIVE! They are up on the high point with the best views along the peninsula (coastal small range) and as you go down hill… the homes get smaller and less expensive. (That’s where the shops are too) I worked for a CEO in Los Altos Hills… another EXPENSIVE… town not far from Atherton and lived in Cupertino by Apple. My brother sold his regular house in San Jose (which he paid $35,000 originally) for a Million Dollars! Of course he retired and moved! Lives in a bigger new home surrounded by vineyards. (I moved to Colorado) I’m not a California hater, but Silicone Valley/Bay Area is too expensive for average people. There’s no land to build, so prices are crazy!

When my husband and I were dating, he lived near Atherton, CA but in Los Gatos, CA, which is also wealthy. I would drive my mid-American sedan car when visiting him and avoided the times the high school was starting/stopping for the day. Why? Because high school students were driving Lamborghinis and Maseratis and the low end was BMWs and Porches. If I so much as scratched one of those it would have cost more than my whole car and have sent my insurance premiums through the roof. Pretty wild stuff living near the ultra-wealthy.

There are several billion dollar companies that are leaving San Franciso and the Bay area. It will be interesting to see how this is going to affect property prices. "The slew of closures of retail stores in San Francisco in recent months doubles as a roundup of well-known shopping brands: Whole Foods, Old Navy and Nordstrom, among others. Nearly half of the stores in the city's downtown shopping district have closed since 2019, the San Francisco Standard found in May." I couldn't afford the light bill in one of those multimillion dollar mega mansions...no thanks. I couldn't keep one of these mansions dusted let alone pay ALL the utility bills.

Most of those tech titans mentioned have numerous other houses though. Several of them (Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison) have homes in San Francisco. I used to work with several colleagues who lived in that area, one in Atherton itself and the other in Menlo Park. I've been to dinner at their homes (not that fancy, really--have probably been torn down by now) so I guess I can say I got an invite to one of those parties for the rich and famous.

Ummm….the Bay Area is not home to the Microsoft headquarters, it’s still in Redmond, WA, a suburb on the east side of Lake Washington from Seattle. Also Bill Gates primary residence was in the Medina neighborhood of Seattle, along the shore of Lake Washington. That’s also were Jeff Bezos lives or lived. Since both the Gates’ and Bezos’ got divorced I don’t know if they still own those homes. Only people with incredibly high incomes live in neighborhoods like this. We’re talking the CEO’s of major corporations. The average American doesn’t live in mansions like this with a minimum lot size of one acre.

I live in La Jolla California. I didn’t grow up wealthy, in fact I’m an immigrant from Cambodia. I grew up in one of most dangerous neighborhoods in San Diego. I’ve witnessed friends murdered and myself nearly killed a few times. But after graduating from college I enlisted in the US Army, while serving in the Army I begin buying residential properties. After serving 12 years, I decided to hang my boots. Then I began investing in commercial property that includes apartments units, industrial parks, strip malls and other businesses. La Jolla properties ranged from $2 million to $56 million. When I bought my house in 2002 it was $2.4 million today it’s worth $6 million but it’s only a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath house or 2438 square feet. I’m here to brag or anything. But I’m saying is that any property located along the California coast will be extremely expensive.

I have to wonder though how old that video is and if the prices for super expensive houses changes as quickly as normal houses. When we bought our house in nearby San Jose 13 years ago, it was expensive then, but in those 13 years, the values have nearly tripled. Our house is just an ordinary suburban split level house at about 1800 sq. ft. and it was built in 1965. We have only 3 bedrooms and also a pool with a nice yard. Our $500K purchase is now worth about $1.5M. Honestly I don't know what I'd do with a house that large as I can barely keep up with cleaning and maintenance on the one we have now.

Now I live in a 2,022 sq. ft. townhouse that is valued at $1.7M which puts me just about in the middle of what is going on in my neighborhood. Yesterday I paid $5/gal for regular gas. California real estate is extremely expensive - up and down the coast. Northern California has more open space and less population, so you can get these sprawling estates near tech cities. In Southern California, it is also really expensive and not just in Beverly Hills! San Diego has sky rocketed in price over the past 10 years and so have many suburbs of Los Angeles. Even in modest neighborhoods, most homes start at $650,000+ Our house has increased about 40% in 7 years and we would not be able to afford it if we bought it now!

And on top of that you have to hire a cleaning crew to be able to keep the place clean. Don't even think about you're going to clean it yourself there's too much house for one or two people to clean. You need a whole cleaning crew that comes in every other day to clean your house and that cost a lot of money. 🤗😇

I think you need a place big enough for your family to be together, which could be difficult to do in one of those, unless you texted your family members where you should meet. The Wife and I's first house was the only house we had a mortgage and it was a whopping $74K 13 years later we sold it for $140K The last homes we've purchased including two weekend places we paid cash. The home we're in now that we purchased 18 years ago was $450K and we could sell it now for $750K. The key is to save the money you'd normally spend on your mortgage and hold onto the home long enough to make a decent profit. Along with that profit you sold it for along with the money you banked rather than making a mortgage payment.

@ScottyM1959
@ScottyM1959 10 месяцев назад
@pacmanc8103 you're right. California is out of the league of Florida and Texas. You obviously have never been here, or you'd know better, but if you want more accurate description of San Francisco how about practically lawless, with shit and needles to go along with the streets full of the homeless and illegals. With retail stores closing up from being robbed repeatedly, hotels closing because they can't the thugs and homeless away from their guests and the police are powerless because Gavin Newsome and every bought and paid for prosecutor are refusing to prosecute the offenders. Did this sum up just San Francisco better? Oh, and those wild fires weren't in San Francisco, but wine country isn't that far away, so split hairs if you want Los Angeles isn't much better so stop carrying Gaven "Bang Your Wife" Newsome's water and admit your state is turning into one big crack house. Personally, I think the wall should be finished along the southern border and continued around California so you can keep your thugs drug and dregs to yourselves with one road in and out so whatever good people want to leave can save themselves.

The San Andreas fault does not run through SF. Also, no wildfires in SF. Better yet, few bugs and no gators. And buildings are required to meet earthquake standards. Safer than Florida!
