The Innovis ram sale at Carlisle.
Really interesting seeing all these performance based breeds up close for the first time. We've decided to try out an Aberfield SR on some ewes at Lizzy's new ground.
It will be interesting to see how the ewe lambs come out.
Hope you enjoy the video and for more info on the Innovis sheep here is the website

ABOUT ME
I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

Sounds like buyer’s remorse. You’ve worked your way up to better and better sheep. Like you said, it’s a process. I think he’s a nice looking boy. Not everyone can be a supermodel. He’s got the genes you need. He’s just one piece of the puzzle. We also have to work with what we have. Being money poor right now doesn’t mean you always will be. Hugs from a person who’s genetically Scottish but stuck in the US.

My gosh farming is so hard, the investment the farmers have to give and then wait to see the outcome and benefits is mind blowing. It would be nice to see farmers get beneficial grants and support especially with farm animals considering the cost the farmer puts into the animals. I so appreciate the hard work you all put in. Blessings to you Cammy and Lizzie and may he be the best ram around! ❤❤

Cami I have to tell you honestly you are doing such an amazing job building your family a little business as is lizzi. I love that you are both buying your own sheep.. even though you will definitely work them together I'm sure! Having more sheep hopefully means more income especially with the little tiddlers costing a pure fortune these days! I'm sure that buying better rams at a bit more money every now and again will make a ton of difference to next year's lambing. I honestly believe that as you know exactly what you are doing already that purchasing a few show breeds or pure stock to breed and sell on will be the winner for you. You take a look back at someone you admire now in the game who is selling home grown pure breeds that they obviously love and spent time (maybe generations of time) on maybe less animals per year work but more money per sheep. This lil new fella needs a name ❤ I'm gonna suggest Dewi ❤

I hope he surpasses your expectations. This is perhaps scary but brilliant step towards an improved flock. Could you say more about what an Abefield sheep is? I spent some time on the Innovis site and there is so much to learn. As much as you love Cheviot’s I’m surprised you didn’t go with those but you have sound reasoning for the self sufficiency of the Aberfield. Give him a grand name, show him love and he’ll do the job. 😊

Given the price that all of his compatriots were going for I'd say you got a good deal just because in general that's a very good bunch. He's a big investment but I think he's going to be worth it. He has a handsome nose too. But you bought him for performance over how he looks to people all that matters is that he looks good to sheep!! You should give him a name! You could always just call him "£1050".... or something better as he is going to be part of a closed flick therefore he will become a little bit more of the family. Plus it'll make you feel better about spending that money 😅

Great start to the lengthy process of breeding your own high health replacement female stock. Just think of it this way the grandparent sire (your new tup) is currently half the flock in terms of genetics, and, in my opinion pretty reasonably priced at 10 times the cost of females and his influence will go through the flock for quite a few years in the future. My real interest is wondering what your plans are for grandparent females amd terminal sires hybrid / breed you plan to put on his daughters!😀Dan

We went for a easy rams Romney/ freisian/ nz tex. Seem reason, for breeding maternal stock. When he arrived I thought the same, much different to the normal texel tups around, finer and much smaller. But, had some good lambs from him, using him on chev/ tex ewes. Maybe 15/20 less than top mart price for the wether lambs but less work, easier lambing and very few feet problems. Hope he does well for you and Lizzie. Phil

I don't think the ram looks boring! He's a nice lad, and he'll contribute greatly, I'm sure. I imagine you having a giant chart somewhere on a big wall where you put your plans of development. With pieces of paper and string, like in the movies 😆 I know it's silly, and it's not true. I just admire your dedication, and I'm in awe of the complexities of running a farm. So many things are dependent on others, pull multiple consequences one after another. And all you do has to be timed correctly, often within a week in a year. A farmer can't be a slacker. You are doing a great job!

Well done on getting your new tup, I think he’ll do well for you. We bought in some Aberfield x NZ Romney ewes last year, so far really good sheep, we put NZ suftex tups on them, they all lambed outside with very little help, the only supplementary feed they had were a few energy blocks and minerals. The lambs from them have been tremendous. We also bought a Primera tup to put on some Lleyns, again great lambs all born outside. I’m very much in favour of hybrid rams, or at least breeding rams fit for purpose, producing lambs that are born on their own, get up and suck and grow. Any rams ( or bulls for that matter ) bred for the show ring are probably going the wrong way. Big flashy heads and square at the shoulders might look good but are the first thing to cause you problems at lambing time. I’ll be interested to see what other maternal rams you buy👍

Always tough looking at maternal rams compared to a terminal, so much more to worry about than structure & how quick they'll be away. Innovis don't put as much time into tarting the rams up for sale compared to most tup sellers either, relying on the figures & repeat customers instead of cabbages and purl
