Hi Jenny just subscribed to your channel, can you do one on Laura Dickason I’m following the court proceedings here in NZ. She’s an evil monster imo. Suffered from major depression since the age of 15. She talked of wanting to harm/kill her children in SA before moving to NZ. First psychiatrist that interviewed her stated Lauren said she wanted to take her own life but also her children as she didn’t want another woman raising her children if Graham remarried!!! So cruel this woman, those kids had a slow death first by ligature and when that didn’t work suffocation. The oldest girl just shy of her 7th birthday pleaded with her mum to stop. Such a monster hope she gets locked up for life.
i go to a high school just out of Dunedin and did the Loves Me Not program last year at school, it was a whole day program and we learnt about Sophies case as well as about signs of abusive relationships and what to do. It was quite moving for many people.
I wish this sort of program was around when i was in school! Better than learning shakespeare or trigonometry! In my early 20s i had similar relationships and it couldnt of ended up worse... things like telling me what i could wear, who i could hang out with, so glad i know now but it took me many years
@@ronniestar8762same… until my current partner almost every male in my life (romantic and family) was like this guy… I didn’t even know I could say “no” until I was about 23…
You did a great service with this video. There is hardly anything on Sophie and honestly I've had to fight against people trolling in the comments of the old news clips. So Sophie's family really deserve coverage and empathy like this. I'm sorry but I'm tearing up so can't type well. The way you handled this is very respectful. I'm not a true crime person, so I notice the difference between someone who is providing content and someone who genuinely cares for the people involved. You are definitely the latter. ❤️
Subscribing in hopes you come back to work on your channel. I love how well-researched this was and the care you took to honoring Sophie's memory whilst telling her story.
Glad you're back! Love your channel and the long videos are my fave 💟 Thanks for sharing this story - it's really interesting to hear NZ cases because they're not often covered elsewhere.
I remember this happening, Clayton is one of the most despicable kinds of humans. Poor Sophie. You really did a great job on this video, you clearly did so much research and brought so much life to Sophie, this wan't just a retelling of a wikipedia page like so many other videos are. I've seen Sophie's story is back in the news with the Foundation trying to ban student/tutor relationships, I hope that happens.
I remember this case well, I am the same age as Sophie (or the age she would have been) and living in Wellington at the time. So terrible that after her life was taken in such a horrible way, the lawyers then tried to destroy her character as well. Such a sad case 😔
That trial was a failure of our justice system in my opinion… after reading Sophie’s Legacy, her poor family went through absolute hell after already grappling with the brutal murder of their loved one.
I've been following a few true crime RU-vidrs for a while now and only just came across your channel. You did a fantastic job on this video, well done! You're the first New Zealander I've discovered with content like this so it's very exciting for me, lol. I am also from Dunedin and moved to Ravensbourne about a year after this took place. I am also a (mature) uni student and have walked by Sophie's tree on campus many times. Every time, I think of her and what she may have accomplished by now. She was a beautiful and incredibly intelligent young lady. I remember reading somewhere that one of her brothers said he couldn't even think of his sister without remembering how she died 😥 my heart goes out to her family and I hope they are doing ok even though they will never recover. It was so brutal and grotesque, I sincerely hope the perpetrator rots behind bars. Thank you for covering the case so respectfully. I am looking forward to watching more of your videos! 🇳🇿
Thank you Jenny. Your relaying of the story was an honest portrayal of an horrific murder. I always thought that the defence’s job was to defend the client for the actions they did so that they get a fair trial - not to lie and twist the truth. By doing that they automatically degrade the victim and the victims family. It is also equally disgusting the protection and leniency perpetrators get - 18 years minimum come on. Her life and everybody else’s trauma is equivalent to 18 years?? Thank you jury that you could see through the defence’s lies. I couldn’t think of anything else worse than having to experience this as a mother and my heart goes out to the family
Ignore all negative BS trolls and keep up the good work. Such a horrific case. A thorough and dignified account. Well done. Sad and angry now. Just aweful😢
I appreciate your compassionate and thoughtful approach to the cases you cover. If only other true crime content creators would police their motives as thoroughly. There are others who do, but then there are those who do such things as combining discussion of true crime cases with mukbang videos or makeup tutorials. This behavior makes me lose faith in humanity. If they combined mukbang videos and makeup tutorials with horror fiction, I'd have no problem with it. But true crime involves real people being victimized. I think many of us who have an interest in such content are trying to understand how people could commit such horrid acts. I've studied psychology on and off through the years, and I'm no closer to understanding at almost 60 than I was in my early teens.
I agree, the NZ judicial system is a joke. The provocation defence was an interesting one. Hypothetical situation: a woman who has been abused by her partner over a period of years, finally flips one day and (when the partner is asleep in bed) kills him. It would then be hard for her to be convicted for anything other than murder ?
Hello how are you? I would like to say that I watched your channel for the first time and I loved the way you narrated everything, the calm, serenity, politeness... I also hated this verdict and the neglect in the country, regarding crimes like this. A hug from Brazil. I loved you and I would like to one day, if possible, have your friendship. I love meeting new and outside people. ☺
Thank you for covering this case in such detail, I didn't know about this story as I moved to NZ after this happened. It's really disturbing to hear how the justice system isn't any better then some pacific island judicial systems😱😭😱. I used to wonder some people have so little faith in the justice system here, now I can sorta understand. I know there some good people working in the justice system, yet, the system itself still fails on a lot on things. Its really downright evil how much they (the criminals lawyers) dragged Sophia's name through the mud like that, i hope they face charges for that too. Anyways, I appreciate your hard work, thanks again! 💐
How pathetic Hes trying orovacstion and self defence Even if some one says Fuck you how is this justification for murdering them If she attacked him why did he block the door if he felt threatened and really stabbing 216 times for self defence ?!?!And how does that explain the mutilating of the body afterwards?!?! This provocation law is e stupidest thing I’ve ever heard I’m pushed off so therefore justified murdering and mutilTing some one As an adult I can’t control myself if some one is sarcastic to me or calls me a name?!?! Rewarding and excusing violence aggression lack of control narcissism etc Ridiculous!!!
I still feel burning hate for him. I remember this happening and general consensus that he should be publicly released with no legal rights or protections so the public can handle him however we want. Poor Sophie and her family. I can't even imagine.
When this was going on he'd be standing in the dock with a pair of prison officers one of those guys was a small town bully and had a shady past of sexual offending against women and girls in my hometown. Remember my brother seeing the guy standing next to him and he said sex pests in the dock together.
I remember this dude ..yes this case was very disturbing..poor Sophie ..he was a right narcissistic asshole and his sentence was a dam joke..that’s a very comprehensive vid and you have done a great job explaining this terrible event ..so thankyou
Thank you for sharing this story, Jenny. What a despicable monster this Clayton is. Sophie should never have gone on a date with a piece of rubbish like him! He has no class. My deepest sympathy to Sophie's dad and her siblings. May God give them His peace.
Oh gosh how ridiculous. This was NOT PROVOCATION in anyway. This was premeditated because Clayton TOOK his knife with him to the scene. They didn't get into an argument in the kitchen that got physical. He plotted her murder and defense aswell and he thought he'd get a slap on the wrist. I mean 18 yrs non parole may not be enough for some but if he was found guilty of Manslaughter it would have been way less time. It didn't work for him and he may be imprisoned for the rest of his life because 18 years is the minimum non-parole period. This murder was so incredibly vicious and the amount of violence in this case is not something you see every day, it's shocking.
The defence of provocation was always tacitly intended to provide a get-out-of-jail-free card to men who reacted violently to homosexual advances, and was successfully employed in precisely this way on more than one occasion. Without wishing to suggest Weatherstone ever had a leg to stand on, the fact that this law was only repealed after someone tried to use it to excuse violence in a straight relationship should have raised more debate that it did.
The justice systems all around the world strongly favor men. Ugh. Thank you for being this story to us and in such a caring way. I did not know this case. Can you tell me. In New Zealand- at the end of the 18 years is there a review to determine if he should be allowed out? Or is the assumption he will be released unless he has done something awful in prison.
Thank you for being here Amy, I appreciate you!! In theory Clayton will go up for review and I doubt he’ll be released but given how lax our system is I wouldn’t be surprised 🙄
I was married to a highly abusive dangerous man he was sentenced to a minimum of 8 years in prison. I found out recently he has a parole hearing sometime this week. I'm hoping he is kept in
That awkward moment when you click on the thumbnail of a video and realise you incorrectly identifed the video narrator and the victim. The guy was definitely seeming to give the glasses girl some evil stares.
As an American, I've never heard of Sophie and her case. I looked her up and she was such a lovely young woman, intelligent and her future ahead of her. Clayton was extremely average with his receding hairline and mullet. What was she thinking?
I've never understood the point of counting the number of stab wounds or bullet holes. It's irrelevant. The viciousness of the attack and areas that are stabbed or shot have validity but the count is almost like a lottery and just give the next criminal a target number to surpass. I.guess it's a job for the intellectual in the police department
I have one suggestion. You have a nervous laugh, and it comes out in the worst parts. I can tell its not on purpose but to someone who isn't as in tune as others it could come of as disturbing and disrespectful. Just something to point out, you may not know that you are doing it
I wish you luck however I find all your head wiggling and eye movements very distracting from the actual video and have stopped watching afyer 5 minutes.
Thanks for tuning in Lesley, I have ADHD so it’s literally impossible for me to sit still so this is the best I can do I’m afraid. 😊 plenty of other true crime RU-vidrs for you to enjoy who’s brains allow them to sit completely still.
Thanks for the feedback! I did run a poll beforehand to see how long my viewers preferred the videos to be and if they’d rather have it broken into two parts. 80% said they’d prefer one big one video so that’s why I did it :)
