That game was literal magic to me when it first came out. Just the fact of standing in a house and looking out a window and still seeing the same layout. Graphically masterful.
Same! I remember watching a review where the guy said it was okay, but GTA 4 would be so much better. Still bought it and couldn't unterstand it. GTA 4 is great aswell, but Mafia 2 was the game that unleashed my love for oldie rock n roll and oldtimer cars :D
without a console for most of my childhood, this was my first game on an xbox, only having a gamecube. It blew my fucking mind, i bought this instead of The Godfather part 2 and im so glad i did.
This is still my favourite game to this day. I remember uninstalling it when my brother told me there was a stat showing how long you looked at the lady magazines. xD
Bro , I played on our TV in the living room, and thinking these magazines are something like trophies or notes or news like in Mafia 1 definitive edition, and be opening one and immediately shutting down the power grid ... And the magazines take like 90 Percent of the TV too lmao there's no way to miss it .
The anachronism is atrocious though. It’s 1951 with cars like the Shubert Beverly (1956 Bel Air) and the Smith Thunderbolt (1955 Thunderbird). 4-5 years may not seem long, however, there was an noticeable shift in car design after 1955 which takes away from the attempted 1951 atmosphere.
When I was 15, I played it the second time just to collect all the magazines... It really helped my 16 yr old self, honestly the first delayed gratification lesson I've ever got.
"I have Italian blood in me. Not through genetics, I just sometimes inject it straight into my veins." These little jokes are what make me continue watch this channel as this genuinely makes me laugh. Thanks, Modest Pelican!
They just don't make them like they used to. I still go back to this game from time to time to redo the top missions or just cruise around the city. This game had such an amazing storyline too.
I remember being a teenager when this was new and my mom was getting married to my step dad who's from New York city. My step grandma was there visiting from NYC and watched me play this game and loved it lol especially the radio stations and just watching me drive through the city. She would of been a teenager during this time period.
This game was one of the first games I'd have ever played that made me feel genuine emersion 🥺 From the city to the fact you can't speed infront of cops to the crime scene tape left the next day after you rob a gun shop.. This game is truly remarkable and I'm glad I had good enough taste as a kid to play it when it was originally came out
@@TheUltimateHacker007 they had to rush it and cut a lot of stuff out. There are a few good yt videos on this. There were supposed to be gun licences, car showroom, real estate agency, pizzeria scaletta
@@krashd they have, its called friends for life, you get to free roam with all of the houses accessible and the car showroom where you can buy cars, its cool!
I was the Italian LQA tester for this game, beautiful memories of a strong team and countless weeks of overtime to get this done in time. I was in Montreal, it was snowing outside and snowing in the game too. One thing that made us testers laugh all the time: Vito gets back from war and the best thing he gets is an unappealing chicken soup 😂
That must have been an amazing experience! What kind of job/contract/position was that? Was it like a permanent position under the development company or just a temporary for hire job? I always loved this game, too bad the open world was very restricted, and the free roam was cut!
@@valeg96 I worked for a company called Babel Media, is was an outsourcing testing company that offered both functionality and linguistic testing. I always wanted to make a few videos about my experience in the industry (overall very good), but I am not sure if it’s interesting for anyone.
@@valeg96 aaaaand, the free roam wasn’t the only thing they decided to cut before release. There were some cool things the devs had in early builds that never made it to the final game.
When I was 15, I played it the second time just to collect all the magazines... Which really helped my 16 yr old self, honestly the best lesson on delayed gratification I've ever got.
This is one of my favorite games of all time and I've beaten it multiple times and recently platinumed it. It's feels so good to see I'm not alone in my admiration of this game.
I was paying this during a very tough time , that pause screen music, haunting yet beautiful. Time period of winter in ‘45 so bleak and frigid. The storyline and the arcs I didn’t expect. One of my favorites of all time .
The intro in Empire bay - you arriving in a Taxi, let it snow playing in the background. You get out into the snow and walk to the little kiosk - the man there is speaking with you. You go ahead and walk along the little alley way with the old neighbours recognizing you, visibely happy that you are back. This is the most beautiful and atmospheric scene in gaming history to me. I just love this game and I cant wait to play it again in christmas time. ❤
My assistant recommended your channel, particularly your Hitman videos. Saw the Bombay slum Hitman video and have been hooked since then. Thanks so much for all the laughs!
This was my favorite game back in the day, being able to turn on the lights and the sink was way cooler than it should have been for me Only problem is there isnt really free roam and no side misions or activities
This is exactly the reason why the issues of mafias combat is too hard to not overlook. Everyone’s focused on little cool details like looking out windows and turning on lights and sinks lol It’s even more immersive when you do basic stuff like that in real life
@@JustSkram That's a shtty argument considering the fact, it could have been made good? Lmfao. Wtf kind of argument do you have? "It would be bad because the game is bad" if executed properly, it would be great. Nothing, NOTHING warrants it NOT having free roam.
i love this game and especially the begining, the vibe is just very very good the snow, coming home and being on friendly soil again, it just feels very warm
Played through this classic 4 times. I also had DLCs, used mods and spent some time actually just driving around, robbing gun stores or playing DLC missions.
I absolutely love this game, finished it a few times and haven't played it since 2010/2011. Watching game footage gives me nostalgia. It was so fun playing it, even more fun than Mafia 1 on PS2. I will try the remastered version whenever I get the chance!
One of my favorite games. So atmospheric and immersive. Just the fact that you could go and buy a burger or have a drink at a bar or buy different clothes (or steal them 😂). The graphics are also really nice for the time and even though the gunplay feels a little clunky at times, just the variety of guns is really cool.
a secret most ppl who played mafia 2 don't know is that you can disable the alarm on the fuel stamp mission you simply find the stair case that leads down to the coal burning rooms among them one room has a switch that disables the alarm, this will allow you to leave the government building without worrying about cops/guards looking for you
Mafia 2 is genuinely one of the finest and most memorable games to fly under the radar. I played the hell out of the demo on PS3 before I got it fully and I still love the game today.
Definitely come out with a part two. This is one of my favorite games of all time and your commentary is hilarious. The only frustrating thing about this game is the historical inaccuracy. The world was not that advanced in 1951. It was still a fun game though.
I just finished this game again, I lost count how many times I've played the story but after that I could not play free roam, until that is I installed the free roam mod and now I am having so much fun just driving around with Henry and Joe and driving cars. I love the car and shooting mechanics. The ragdoll and car impacts are so realistic. This game and GTA IV is forever immortal and live rent free in my PC. Cheers to everybody who still enjoys the classics over the copy paste crap of today.
This is my favorite game of all time. Every single year since release I replay it, starting in the winter time, sometimes I even wait till spring irl just to continue the game once the season changes in the chapters. Im still obsessed with this game.
the bit where you're driving back from burying the body with Joe and everyone is singing Dean Martin in the car is one of my favorite little scenes in any game ever
I really like how the game has Phys-X. There's a couple levels (one in an office in particular with glass blocks) that is truly bad ass when the shooting breaks out. Really wish physical particles like that would make their way back into games.
The graphics were ahead of its time even for game made in 2010 games these days I think developers are lazy and don’t put so much effort into making games
I finally discovered the joy of the Mafia series while working at Wawa and using the "company cash",(or Wawa bucks), and ordered the Definitive Ed. Was really hoping the other 2 would also become available, but nope! Then I got fired and my hopes for any other new (to me) games. Also I love using 'Free Ride' while Social Distortion plays in my ears. 💯 Perfect👌
Thanks modest pelican! I got mafia 1 remastered because of you and it was amazing, and I’d love to play this too, plus you’re comedy is on point, thanks for the great content!
FINALLY. About time my favourite game of all time is getting the attention it deserves. This game was insanely ahead of its time and so immersive. The fact that 60% of the game was scrapped and still 11/10 is a testament to how amazing it is. I hope it is remastered to have all the features and missions it was originally supposed to have.
“Either way, I was at half mast” 🤣🤣🤣 BTW: when fighting, I found all you have to do is HOLD your thumb down on the A button, and you’ll dodge EVERY punch automatically. They always swing twice, then just hit B for the quick light punches. Your light punches never miss. It won’t be long before you get your finishing move, and you’ll never get hit even once!
8:19 “They’re having a heated argument, so I put out my 9-10-11 and shoot him in the head” As you should do with anyone, to avoid getting insurance involved.
I remember playing this on Xbox 360 it looked so amazing and so realistic, but I remember being disappointed that you couldn't free roam after end game
I totally agree with the fact that Italians have an immaculate relationship with fedoras. The last time I put one on, my sexual appeal went from 0 to -100 which doesn't say much, but yeah. Stay hydrated.
Modern Pelican is always up to no good, but at least he keeps himself well hydrated. 😂 The car race is what I hate the most about this otherwise great game.
Ive played this game 4 times and planning to play it again with mods with further story honestly mafia franchise is amazing i know 3rd one wasn't as good but it definitely grows on you
Gasoline was rationed in the U.S during WW2. The stamps you steal in Mafia 2 are not postage stamps, but fuel stamps and that's why you hurry to take the stamps to gas stations before the stamps expire. Presumably they were also worth way more than postage stamps :)
6:56 probably one of the hardest mission’s (for me at least) and you do it with THAT!? I couldn’t even do it with a Buick skylark. At least for a few times
Played this when I was 11-12 and it’s still one of my all time favorites. Extremely immersive just a great game the nostalgia comes back watching this video
