Breakfalling is also useful _in day to day life_ - we're bipeds, and everyone trips over sometimes. I've had a broken leg and slipped on my crutches while racing into a hospital entrance to make a physio rehab appointment on a rainy day, and somehow did a perfect side full body breakfall _on the side of my broken leg._ And didn't do any damage at all. The hospital reception staff had run over expecting me to have badly exacerbated my injuries and were amazed when I got up, checked myself out and was fine (except for the pre existing broken leg of course). I could have done some serious damage and rebroken my leg if I hadn't fluked that landing as a reflex.

Worse yet, if the fall and the old break was bad enough, your leg mightve needed to be amputated

Saved my life the other day, I was recording a music video out the back of a car. Wasn’t secured properly and feel out the back at nothing crazy maybe about 15 mph. I had a camera with a gymbal in one hand, had that high in the air but broke fell with my other hand and didn’t smash my head back into the concrete. Recorded it all. Got back up and shot it again.

Keep that arm nearly parallel to the ground. Posting out on a high amplitude throw or sweep can dislocate or break your arm catastrophically. I was ringside when Tim Sternod posted out straight down when Mike Pierce threw him at a Sportfight in Portland … i think it was a spiral fracture of humerus. Disgusting noises and visuals.
