In surfing there are some fundamental movements which should be mastered if you want to progress from beginner surfer to intermediate and then advanced surfer.
The bottom turn is one such movement and I constantly see surfers who, with small tweaks and instruction, could absolutely fast track their surfing progression and make huge leaps forward with their performance. This is what we focus on during my wave pool surf retreats; micro adjustments for big gains on a wave.
This video series is brought to you by The Surfers Roadmap - the ultimate resource for all surf progression. thesurfersroadmap.com/

hey Kale, first off, thanks so much for these "detailed lesson" series. Many struggling surfers (like myself) live (and work) in parts of the world where out salaries wouldn't in a million years allow or accommodate paying for The Surfer's Roadmap. Now on to the juice, this lesson is amazing! I've been struggling to figure out wth was wrong with my bottom turn (sp. on my forehand). I could feel it was a timing issue, but very cluelessly trying delaying the release vs hurrying it a bit .. Sometimes/in some waves(?) it worked like a charm and over 50% of the time I can actually feel how I'm losing tons of speed, and none of the surf coaches I've interacted with could break it down and offer useful guidance for this particular struggle. The way you break down technique in a way that our brains can understand and can easily send the info to our bodies is downright genius, I keep sending your videos to friends that like me, might be struggling with working on their technique in an organized and well-informed manner. pd. the part that 'clicked' for me was your analysis at 3:41!

Absolutely brilliant video! On a backside bottom turn, I knew to rotate the upper body back toward the wave such that the leading arm moves in the horizontal plane toward the wave face, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone address the vertical, low-to-high/high-to-low aspect. Such an epiphany! I’m a big fan of your work & your style. Thanks!!! 🙏🤙💛🏄

Hey mate love your videos, I’ve kinda noticed though, it almost seems forced like the flow is off in the turns the resistance on the Board angle and the connection between turns is jerky. Is that the video or is it a limitation of the wave you have to work with. Have you won any competitions, or surfed the circuit?
@Lotus-Son
@Lotus-Son 2 года назад
I don't think you emphasized how important the forehand positioning is, though. At 4:18 you can clearly see a huge difference in how much more you follow through with your forehand to pivot around and drive back up to the top of the wave, than the other surfer who successfully plants his forehand down, but doesn't do much else with it to help him drive back up to the top of the wave. I feel that with a strong forehand follow-through and drive it actually helps to position your whole body in the correct coiled and compressed position you keep talking about, and helps to distribute and place more weight to the backfoot too. When you watch pros do it, the forehand follow-through extends much farther than most decent surfers you see in the lineup. And they get to compress far more for much more explosive and powerful turns and maneuvers (that and natural-born talent helps them too).

Yooooo kale ✌️. You know that fin sets come with a recommended weight for the surfer. Theres Medium fins and Large fins. Right now im riding Large and i am 140 pounds, which is under the weight range for the fins im using (Large). Do you think that the large fins would be affecting my progression in maneuvers or nahhh? Or should I consider changing to the Medium fins? 🤙🤙🤙

I own an 8 foot Odysea foam board and I live near the beach but it is really hard for me. I'm trying to get out there as much as possible this summer to get as good as I can. Do you think its possible that if I keep consistency I will be able to surf on a shorter board in a year or so?
