I don’t think you understand why they sell out as they do; they are made and sold to order. They certainly were when I bought mine. The system was putting up $200 and once the magic order was reached the order went to the very same factory that makes the MSR Hubba Hubba but for a lot less than the quoted price at the time which was £359, €360 $360… it was then shipped directly to me and my bank statement in July 2019 was €197. Quite a saving. It is incredibly light and perfect for me, someone 70 yrs old with buggered knees. I don’t carry cans of beer and film myself with go-pros, neither do I take more than necessary. On long distance bike trips i don’t take walking poles but made up some custom aluminium & bungee cord tent poles, from a decathlon tent repair kit - 78g weight. It is a brilliant tent that served in high winds above Chamonix and condensation? Never had any. Knocks mainstream competition into cocked hats.

Thanks Paul. The non wild camping/backpacking community really won't understand the hype around the technology of this tent. The fact that it only takes four stakes and is extremely stable is pretty darn amazing. I had a first generation xmid 1p and sold it because it lacked space. The second generation is much improved. I'm also stoked that it will come with a solid interior. Here in the states, I love my dcf tents. I have three plus numerous tarps that I use in all weather, including above tree line in high winds. My biggest concern with those is large hail above tree line. They've proven quite good in all other circumstances as long as I keep them well vented and don't set up where condensation will be terribly bad. Having a good all weather, 3-4 season (as long as you are below tree line when winds get really high or there is alot of snow load, makes the XMid a very affordable winter option (emphasize below tree line). For the negative commentators, who don't get why we are excited about the shape and innovations of Dan Durston, let me just say, this tent is probably not for them. It's a very affordable, fairly lightweight double wall tent, super easy to pitch, that will hold up in many environments and conditions. I would get one with a solid interior.....if ever I could find it in stock. For now, I'll just wait out the buying frenzy and focus on other equipment until I can get my hands on one. I probably won't get a pro version because I already have two ZPacks DCF tents that work pretty well and have those bases covered. Let me just say though, that Durston's prices are in line with similar specialty tents and its probably worth waiting for if trips are planned for a ways in the future. Sure, its just a tent, but oh boy, the design innovations and improvements make this a very nice specialty wild camping/backpacking tent. The ease of set up and minimal use of 4 stakes alone is quite an achievement compared to other tents by major companies who just simply miss the point on sooooo many design/technical levels. I try to avoid the Durston hype, but it's now proven itself in performance and quality. Thanks again for the review. Congrats to you and Jo!

I'm so glad you managed to get one of these, you're going to love it I swear. A tiny tip, you can stick the pole in through the vent if it's raining, saves you opening the doors right up. I have many other tips, but that one has saved a wet inner a few times. There's so many great little features that make this tent stand out from the crowd, I look forward to seeing it become your main tent and watching all your adventures in it 😉🤣 p.s. I was lucky enough to purchase one of these amazing tents when they were first made available through Drop. Absolutely brilliant piece of kit and just a cool bonus that it was created by a fellow Canadian! 🇨🇦 At the time I purchased it, they only had the 1 and 2 person versions available and both only came with the mesh inner. This is not an issue for me as I tend to run on the warm side anyway so the extra ventilation is a big advantage. I DO want to add the X-Mid ground sheet and Stargazer kit at some point. Many thanks to Dan for designing and producing such an ingenious tent and I wish you and Durston Gear nothing but luck and success going forward. All the best from Nova Scotia.

I’ve got a first revision 2 man. Knew of Dan from being on backpacking light website pre him making tents commercially. Was getting good reviews in the US so thought why not. Had 2+ years of use from mine. They really are great tents. Had in about 25 mph winds and it’s stable but a bit flappy. The earlier editions don’t have the extra guy point near the door tie out. Which I believe makes a little difference to the deflection of the big panel. Wouldn’t be my first choice 4 season (scottish) tent Or if any high winds were forecast (by high I’d say 25-40mph) any higher than that forecast I stay home. But the rest of the time it ticks all the boxes I’d say. Also like the look of the solid inner. Hope Dan decides to sell these separately. I know he has mentioned in the past that was his intention.

Mine is the original one person which is 28 inches ( new ones 32 inches ) by 87 ( new ones 90 inches ) for the enclosed netted sleeping area. Overall dimensions are 67 inches by 100 inches. Bug free weather leave the inner tent at home. Then using a ground cloth gives a person a lot of room and even less weight to carry.

Amazing tents! I was lucky to get one in February after 18 months of trying, but we’ll worth the wait. A major plus that you didn’t mention, particularly for climates like the UK, is the ability to drop the inner nest without disturbing the fly sheet. This means you can completely pack down under cover and prepare to move in the rain, then only spend 30 seconds shoving the wet fly sheet on your pack. Also a big shout out to Dan for after sales support. I needed advice on trekking poles, as i was getting mixed advice, and he was super helpful and quick to reply. Buy this tent, it’s superb. I’ve used it loads and never used more than 6 pegs, the 4 corner pegs and 2 vestibule pegs, without any issues on the Lakeland fells.

A great source of advice and recommendations, I'm a cyclist and base my decisions on volume not so much weight. But I ride 12 months a year....in all weather's, and as you'd expect in GB, its always windy, dark and wet when I stop. It would be nice to see how easy these ultralight tents are to put up, in dusk, windy, and raining. Plus you need to put up the fly sheet first.... Most campers... walkers... etc put up thier tents at the end of the day, not midday...not always summer. Cheers for the great info.

Quite a few of us use xmids. It can go up altogether, fly and inner. Personally I prefer fly first and then inner as I keep the inner separate if the fly is wet. It surprised me on the first few pitches, how quickly it is to put up. 4 corner pegs and put in the Poles and it is up... with the inner. Two more pegs for the doors and you are ready. When windy it is the same technique as any other tent. In inclement weather there are a total of 6 guylines and 4 additional pegging points on the fly. There is also ample room to cook in the vestibule. Spacewise, I have been cooped up in smaller tents that weigh more. This has enough head height for me sitting on an exped downmat and my 2 man xmid takes two full size mats. It is made of sil poly so does not sag when the weather changes and does not absorb water. Sil nylon does sag, believe me. The solid inner is just as good as Any tent I've used in the wind and snow so I'm mot worried about that. It is not all mesh which suits our climate more. The only downside for a cyclist or motorcyclist is poles. This will sit on your bars but you would have to get custom poles for it. I also found the ties for the inner doors a faff so modded them. The magnetic door clips for the fly works better than many other tents. Oh yeah, I ditched the bag as well for a bigger one and the v pegs but I swap pegs out on any tent I get. Basically my xmid 2 replaces a heavier 2 man and will probably replace my much used and much loved Helium 1. It will tot replace my force ten MK3 though which is for the bike and paid for campsites.

Up here in the Arctic we have a few tent criteria which most tent manufacturers simply don’t cater for….. 1. midnight sun, endless days in summer - ideally you need a dark tent Vango did black tents and they were good for this but sadly they were discontinued. 2. Bad weather/cold - you tend to spend more time in your tent so the colour of the inner is important. Vango tents are orange which is a cheerful uplifting colour especially when you have nothing but white snow outside! Sorry Durston but if only you had a colour option it’s more important than you think!

I bought my 1P X-Mid 4 years ago when it was a Drop exclusive. As such, it is a gen1 version. I love this tent. I am, primarily, a hammock camper. However, not every place we go works for hammocking. In those situations, the X-Mid is my default shelter. I'm 6'2" and 225 lbs. I'm a good sized guy who doesn't fit in most ultralight shelters, because the one way every other manufacturer saves weight is by making the shelter shorter. That means I'm touching walls. I don't have that problem in my X-Mid. There's plenty of room and the vestibules offer a ton of usable storage space. I did modify all the guy outs. I found the corner and door lines a little too short and replaced that cordage with longer, more reflective lines. I also replaced the peak guy-outs with longer lines while I was at it, mostly just to put a more reflective line on each. This tent is popular for a reason. It's not a fad. It's not hype. This is the best trekking pole tent on the market.

I'm not looking to take anything away from Durston but I recently purchased the Sierra Designs High Route 1 which appears similar in design and I absolutely love it. This asymmetrical design seems to be the go to for space along with weight saving.

The High Route does have visual similarities but there are some important differences in geometry. The key differences are that the X-Mid (1) widens the fly, so that it can (2) rotate the inner onto a diagonal, which allows it to (3) move the poles inward. This solves the 3 main downsides of the HR (lack of vestibules, mandatory guylines, and flat sidewalls). So the advantages of the X-Mid are are: 1) Sidewalls are no longer vertical, so better wind shedding 2) Creates generous vestibules 3) Longer sleeping length 4) No mandatory guylines That is for the geometry. Then there are other differences in the builds of the tents, such as the X-Mid using non-sag fabric. Both are nice tents and the HR does have the advantage of a more compact footprint.

High Route = designed by Andrew Skurka. X-Mid = designed by Dan Durston

@@lakorai2 the original High Route anyway; the current model is a Skurka-less redesign.

Nice one Paul...how'd you manage to get your hands on one of them?! Looks superb and I'm really curious to see how it holds out in a good ol' UK storm out on the moors. I'm thinking about a new one person tent and also considering going over to using poles when trekking, so this could be the perfect tent. Keep up the good work...but hope you're getting some down time to get out enjoy the hills!

Excellent detailed review of this tent Paul. It seems to be a very impressive product. Light weight, and decent quality. I would like to see how the stress points, primarily the trekking pole insertion points, stand up to the UK winds after a few seasons. Cheers.

I absolutely love the DD tents. I have both first gen 1p and 2p, the solid 2p and the Pro 2 on it's way to Australia. The 1st gen 2p almost survived 80km/h winds, but the shepherd hook pegs it originally came with let me down with the storm induced soggy soil that came with the 80km/h winds. After I borrowed my friends generic el cheapo aluminium pegs to double peg everything down did it finally withstand such strong winds.

Isnt that how circus tents go up! Looks pretty good though overall, like the space inside and vestibule space, colour not sure about though.

Lovely video, I enjoy your take on gear. Do you find that the 1 person version has enough room for a reasonably sized pack inside the tent in the corners of the parallelogram? Or does it need to go under the vestibule?
