Today we are taking a look at the most amazing VR Headset I ever used. I got the chance to check out the Pimax 8K X, This thing is probably the most overkill headset out on the market right now. I love it. It is not missing anything, extremely high FOV, Super high resolution, and really high refresh rate. Today I will be telling you guys what I think about it after my 2 weeks of testing and why this has become my main headset. I hope you enjoy the video :D

Many people are asking me that since this is my main now will I stop with the Quest videos, news, tips and tricks? Absolutely not. I love this headset and it is my main at home, but it is not portable. The Quest 2 is still my go to wireless headset and long time viewers will know how much I love wireless :D So stay tuned for more normal videos tomorrow. Also even through my hours of research I still managed to miss things here. Which is why there will be another video some time in the future. First of all, there is a firmware update, once you apply it you can run 90hz in native mode! Which is insane. However you need to flash this yourself and not only is it in beta but you also need an nvidia rtx 3070 - 3090. Which I don't have since I use AMD. Secondly, Pimax experience is something quite a few people wanted me to mention. I checked it out and there is so many features there that is almost deserves an entire video of its own. Thirdly, while I did put this in caps in the description I just thought I would mention this here as well. When buying my headset I did end up getting a 30% discount. we subscribed you because we are Quest owners and you always talk about Quest contents. Pimax 8kx is for only rich people and its like you are teasing us. Don't be like MRTV because people back off his channel because he mentioned way too much of HP Reverb G2 news before. i hope you don't ruin your channel because of pimax company

@@ji3200 This is a channel about virtual reality. Not just the Oculus Quest. As I said in the above comment. I will not all of a sudden start making content about pimax since as you said it's not going to be something everyone can buy. However, I will continue to review more expensive devices from time to time if an opportunity arises. Since I am here to explore VR as a whole, not just the Oculus Quest. Which once again doesn't change the fact that the headsets people can actually afford are still the main focus. When I make these videos (which I have made in the past) They are rare and usually just reviews and while I might use them as my main headset they are not the focus of the channel.

Once you have set up pitool you dont always have to have it running in my experience (pimax 5kXR) The wire is the most frustrating part. Oh and just make sure that steam VR isnt set to automatically supersample. As to distortion: In my experience this is very dependent on distance from eye to the lenses. A thicker face gasket (eg bhaptics tactal haptic feedback gasket) introduces more edge distortion. The original one that came with it was better for me. But my son couldnt use it with the thin gasket because the headset rested on his nose! Also I think with the 5kxr at least, it will only pair two controllers OR two trackers not both. So if you want full body tracking you will need the additional usb dongles for your vive trackers. This is partly why I have a USB card in my PC.

Welcome to the pimax community, I have a few points on your video; 1.)you completely skipped pimax experience, if you're gonna own a pimax I'd highly recommend using it.(it was on the general tab down the bottom) it allows you to create custom profiles and has a much nicer layout. 2.) The headset does have a manual ipd, the wheel at the bottom right. Though it's not straight forward, and really needs a guide to set up properly. 3.) Though the optic cable is an extra expense it also shrinks the number of usb ports required by half (just make sure you plug it into a usb 3.1 port.) 4.) The headset can actually run at 90hz native mode, but it requires the headset to get a firmware update. You can check openmr forums for the link 5.) Openmr is also a great place to go if your trying to troubleshoot issues, the forums set up is a little clunky but there's a lot of experienced pimax users there who can sort pretty much any problem out.

Thank you! The IPD part I have fixed. The video is processing so it should fix itself in a few hours. I'm actually quite ashamed of that one, so much research and I somehow missed that wheel. That firmware update I need right now, unless i already somehow have it. As for pimax experience, I've heard of it and turned it on once but my PC did not like it. I turned it back off since I didnt think I would need it for anything since the headset seems to work fine without it. I'll turn it back on since you say you recommend it :D

@@TheMysticle eh don't beat yourself up over missing it, it's sorta an unconventional spot for an IPD dial. From what I know the firmware is a beta which is why you can't install it directly from pitool. Pimax experience gave your pc issues? I know pimax home is known to eat up system resources(and doesn't serve any functional purpose), but experience should run without issue. Id go into settings I'd recommend but I don't personally have the 8kx (currently own the 5k+) so if you want suggestions on settings I'd check the forums.

I just checked. I think it was home that gave me issues, not experience. Since experience runs perfectly fine :) I'm going to need to play around with that a lot later. It seems to be loaded with features!

Also, this headset does not have a USB-C on top, only underneath. The other cheaper models have both ports though

This is awesome you have pretty much the same PC build as me and a Pimax 8K. I got mine just has a half-life Alyx came out and i was blown away. I was coming from PlayStation VR, didn’t realize VR could look so goooood.

As an 8kX owner myself and an original backer I wanna thank you for what I consider a very objective review! Also you should check out Pimax Experience. Its sort of like a steam home for your Pimax, allows you to change settings in vr, use your desktop, and start games.

As much as I enjoy VR (I have three headsets and multiple machines capable of it after all), spending this much is rough. Plus I am not that extreme (in a good nerdy way) anymore as I see the original Vive and the Quest 1 being the biggest steps for my enjoyment with VR. Still great to hear you made such a detailed review of the HMD 😄

Hey, you should totally do benchmark tests with the headset. It would be very beneficial in the longrun for the channel. you should test games people will commonly play: 1. Beat Saber 2. Half Lyfe Alex 3. Vr Chat (when it actually works) 4. Pavlov These are games that are a good start to include for testing

Had the Pimax original I've always said even then it was a game changer... as for the lens distortion I never cared, how often in real life are you looking out way to the side? not often normally you just move your head 😂

The thing is, most don't actively look to the side. The wider FOV just makes it so if something comes from the side, now you see it. And adds extra immersion because of that.

It's SO great to hear an endorsement just regarding this technology as it gives me hope that VR can still be so much better - and that it is within reach with regards to it only being a matter of time before this tech becomes standard and affordable. Great work! I can't wait to hear what PS5 VR has in store for us! (Although, I don't expect it'll be this crazy, and it may just match the Reverb G2 specs as it seems VR is more so limited by processing power, prior to and rather than HMD factors like screen resolution/FOV, even refresh rate as this is also mainly taxed on the source).

Good review, I just cant go back to wired and wall trackers ever again. Some day when a set like this can do full wireless then I will for sure get one. At this point I would rather have inside out tracking and wireless rather then a amazing resolution. I have had one pimax and a index and sold them both when I went wireless.. Wiresless is that much of a game changer for me. I have gotten to the point that I don't even use a monitor anymore at all. It's interesting to see people split on the topic, as some prefer the better rez and will go with a wire for that increase and others will never go back to a wire ever again. Keep up the good content.

Thanks for making this review, I recently upgraded my PC. And am very happy to know that you can run this on your system (which is similar to mine), making it a much more compelling buy. Cause for the last few months I've been using my quest 2 with index controllers wirelessly, and would like to upgrade to a headset that can can take advantage of my new 3070, especially with that field of view, as I'd rather have distortion on the sides, than the quest's black bars

You say in this review that we are not ready for the 4k per eye resolution as most games don't have the graphics to be worth it, and this is true but this headset is particularly great for one particular genre and in this genre it completely outshines any other headset and is definitely worth the money and that that's in Simulations. Flight sim and race sims in particular with it's huge FOV and high res 4k the Pimax just makes MSFS 2020, DCS world and I Racing and other flight and racing sims come to life especially with it's 4k resolution so you can read all the dials and cockpit instruments without issue something you can't do easily in an Oculus or similar resolution headset with their extremely narrow FOV as well. But that is the issue, most simmers tend to spend way more on hardware and buy super high end PC's compared to your average gamer. But keep up the good work great review and love the vids

Yo bro. Awesome review, but please be careful not to point the lenses of your headset at window with direct sunlight because it can burn the display behind it. Especially with a very high end VR headset like that. Love your content btw!

For now I'm happy with my Q2, one day I might upgrade. However I really don't feel like messing with base stations after using the quest. I mean I can just switch rooms from my living room to my bed room fx.

More power to you if fov doesn't hinder your enjoyment of vr. For me personally the fov is important for presence and immersion. It's interesting that you touched upon advantages in gameplay but not immersion regarding fov. As soon as I can afford a headset like this I'm buying it. For now though I'm hoping a cheaper valve index type of headset will be released soon. New HTC Vive? 🤞

Excellent review. I have the exact same specs as you but not overclocked, and I've had issues with some VR games, e.g. Elite: Dangerous. I can't run it at 90Hz on my Reverb G2 (2160x2160 per eye native) without frame dropping in high demand areas like up close and personal bounty hunting, and I can't do ground exploration in VR because the framerate drops so low it makes me motion sick. I think the CPU is throttling me. Speaking of Elite: Dangerous, I feel like this headset would be perfect for it, because it's absolutely a game of beautiful visuals. But no way can I justify that price point, especially after all the cash I've dumped into a Knuckles setup for my Reverb G2. I'm absolutely interested in the extra FOV, and I want to give Windows Mixed Reality the boot as soon as I can. But I would have to look at Pimax's other offerings if I go that route. Honestly I'm thinking I'll just wait and see what the Index 2 has to offer, if they come out with one.

More of a general question: I noticed that you said that you don't use your glasses with your VR headset(s) and mentioned that you might be able to do that due to your low prescription. Is it just impossible to do that past a certain lens prescription without loss of clarity, or is it a combination of things, like IPD differences between glasses on and off play and lens magnification, as well as resolution?

I envy that FOV, but probably going to wait for the day a headset like that is standalone and affordable like the quest 2. It's just so nice to be able to go anywhere and use VR without any hassle.

Yeah same, I am set to pre-order the decagear1 headset but its fov is not more then 120deg.. but at least its affordable. Not going to wait 10yrs tho, we should start getting better fov within next 1-2yrs.

@@PRiMETECHAU Well, this didn't age well with the Deca basically being dead. Even all this time later though, I'm also in that same boat wishing for an affordable headset with that large FOV. At this point, borderless FOV is my biggest VR want because it's shocking just how much more immersive a bump in FOV is (especially as someone who only personally owns a Quest headset and has been feeling constrained by the small FOV it offers).

Hi there! I'm curious, did you have it on the 200 degrees mode while you were playing or was it the smaller one? (I can't remember the smaller sizes) people have said they needed a super capable desktop to run at 200 degrees

PRETTY PLEASE... do some FPS tests. I'm a huge First Person Shooter fan and it would be awesome if you could test Population One and/or Contractor$. For a non-FPS game I would love to see Sairento VR: Untethered. If you don't own the games it's all good, it's just not often that I leave comments and after seeing this video, where there's a possible followup video, I figured I'd try. It won't be the same for me as sadly I only own an Oculus Quest (original) and won't likely be able to afford the cheaper Quest 2. I had to sell a few possessions just to get the original and would have waited if I had known that they'd release the Quest 2 a year later. But hey, the 1st Quest is better than no Quest or VR headset at all!!! Also, love the channel and it's content. You're an awesome content creator! Keep up the great work!!!

"Potato" is similar to the Vive FOV, like 15 degrees more than a Quest 2 :) For when you want to play a game as if you had a regular headset.

As a VRChat, Desktop+, EmuVR, and Bigscreen Beta power user, I just wanna know how well it holds up on virtual screen media compared to my Valve Index, same thing with the audio because Index's native headphones are amazing. It's not like I can actually get Pimax 8k X until I get a whole PC upgrade because I don't think my 1080ti's gonna cut it for 2x 4K displays, but when I do upgrade, it's not gonna be for the FOV, it's gonna be for the clarity involved on simulating resizeable 2D screens that VR can offer me.

Matteo recently did a Pimax 8KX review and he pointed out a lot of shortcomings, including a test of the mic and it sounded cheap and bad. Now I'm here watching your review, and it sounds like a completely different mic. I guess they constantly reiterate their headset? Let's hope I get a good version if I do buy.

I also watched his review and was very confused myself when I heard the mic. I almost started wondering if maybe I was using the wrong mic. But then I unplugged it and reconnected it a few times just to make sure and it was certainly the correct one. So I am as confused as you are. I hope that there isn't that much of a difference between headsets in their manufacturing process....

Wow, yeah I'd love to see a for comparison with the quest and both res settings comparisons. Can you run the lower res with a different fps or only 114? Possibly 90 or 75 at lower res would help it on lower spec pc. My pc is similar to yours just has a 1080ti graphics which has been great for my quest 1 with link or virtual desktop.

It actually supports 90hz at 4k per eye which the latest firmware ! You need a 3000 Nvidia series though

17:30 They should fix the edge distortion with post processing, something like a matrix dot product to offset the source image from the rendered image. (Should at least be an optional user setting if it lowers fps noticeably). The defect is called barrel distortion (convex curves), and is very well known in the VR tech / optics world. Btw, if they added a user-generated FOV calibration tool, it could also correct for lens prescriptions - and the user could enter their prescription & save their profile

The pimax has hardware adjustment ipd it is the scroll wheel on the lower right side of the headset.

Removing an overclock is literally just close MSI afterburner or click base clock in your Radeon Adrenalin, and turning off manual overclocking in BIOS. It's super simple to remove an overclock

I've been playing Blade & Sorcery on the CV1 and _really_ wish there were more headests with bigger FOV's. Seems like someone other than a single company would try to make bigger FOV's work after five years.

Opinionated question for anyone: I got myself a quest 2 as my starter vr headset, but as I'm getting into it more, I've been thinking of what headset to upgrade to when the time comes (or a company/brand best suitable for my issue) but as a woman with an IPD of 54-56mm, which would you recommend as far as clarity for my small IPD goes?

The Valve Index is a very good headset, I'm pretty sure your IPD should work on it, might have to double check on that one though. It's also SteamVR tracked and has the best controllers to ever exist.

distortion in the peripheral doesn't bug me because i have glasses and my prescription is high enough that distortion in the peripheral is already part of my everyday life. edit: what would you say your prescription is? i've found some vr headsets account for my relatively low -2.25/-2.25 but some don't... i was so glad to get the lenses for the quest 2 cause it was not doing it for me at all, but finding lenses if i want to get one of these things seems a bit more complicated...

As a previous 8KX owner I have to say the FOV is KILLER. Image quality is pretty good. However if you can deal with the limited FOV the Reverb G2 is FAR more comfortable, cheaper and definitely much clearer than the 8KX. Don't get me wrong the 8KX FOV is its killer feature and it's amazing BUT...swapping between the 8KX and G2 I honestly could not get past how much clearer the G2 is. That and as a glasses wearer you can buy Rx lenses for the G2 which you cannot for the 8KX. 90% of customers will be happier with the G2. Great 8KX review though!

For me it depends on the game - I rarely notice the distortion in most games, but it's very noticeable in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, looking kinda like the world is curving around you at the edges of your peripheral vision. If you dislike the image distortion you can switch from the widest FOV ("Large") to one that cuts off the edges ("Normal"), lowering the FOV by like 30 degrees (still quite a bit larger than other headsets).

15:45 bruh racing games and games like Alyx do benefit alot from resolution ! You can see much further into the distance and the textures do become more prominent. And resolution removes aliasing shimmering for example Elite dangerous or arizona sunshine
